I have demonstrated my dedication to community service by being part of service clubs, organizing volunteer activities, and volunteering at places that I feel are disregarded. I am a part of two service clubs; National Honor Society (NHS) and Interact. In NHS I was the communications officer or historian for a year. I would inform students of upcoming volunteer activities, and I would get them to volunteer. Some volunteer activities I participated in for NHS were park cleanups, beach cleanups, and fundraisers. In 11th grade I would go with some of classmates to Boyd Hill Nature Preserve to rid it of invasive species such as air potatoes and Caesar’s weed. Through NHS in 12th grade I also went with some classmates to a nearby beach, Upham beach …show more content…
Most of the students from my school were assigned to guide the people running and cheer them on. This was one of my favorite events because I felt that my small action of just guiding people and cheering them on to continue running for something important had meaning. While guiding and cheering the runners on a little kid came to me a put a stick on my head praising how motivating I was. I also enjoyed the Heifer and World Wildlife foundation fundraiser I got to be a part of setting up because the club officers and the teacher all agreed to host a paint day to get people to come to the event and donate money. I got to incorporate one of my passions to raise money to save animals and give disadvantaged people an animal to provide food for their families. Through NHS I learned a lot about how events are held and I learned about the Impact I can have volunteering. Through Interact I also participated in some volunteer events. In 11th grade I participated in a Boredom Busters event and made a set of coloring sheets for kids in a hospital to color
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
In this effort, I serve the community by making an effort to keep the people in it healthier. Lastly, I show service to my school through the help I provided while in the National Junior Honor Society. As a member of NJHS I helped our middle school begin a recycling program; I helped get the recycling boxes and bins ready, gather paper from around the school, and sort the paper after school. Through this I show a dedication to my school and community, because not only does recycling help the school reduce waste but it also allows the environment resources to last longer. For these reasons, I am an excellent, determined, helpful member, who is more than willing to provide service to my school and community.
Serving for the community and the school without compensation or recognition is a defining characteristic of the National Honor Society. I believe that I provide plenteous hours of service to my school and community. In my school, I am a member of Interact Club- a club that encourages volunteer work regarding the school and the community. I have participated in many Interact activities such as Make a Difference Day- cleaning trash at the Wildlife Refuge, Martin Luther King Day at Stockton University- helping organizations such as Circle K, and Project Green- cleaning trash and planting at the Atlantic City beach. In addition to these activities, I have volunteered at Seashore Gardens over the summer before my junior year. There, I was able to engage and interact with the elderly by coloring with them, distributing their lunches, and getting to know them. During my first day volunteering there, I had made a friend instantly as we bonded over gossiping and each other’s daytime activities. It was definitely an experience I will never forget. In addition, I volunteered my time by bagging groceries at ShopRite and washing cars to help fundraise for the Absegami girls soccer team as well as making Valentine's Day cards for the elderly, decorating classroom doors for Christmas, and helping my class with a cookie fundraiser. Helping the environment, aiding the elderly, bagging groceries, helping my class, and being
In the past, I have volunteered for our bands fundraiser every Christmas, which we host at our high school. It is a unique moment in time, to see the joy of children's faces as they walk into the school that morning for Breakfast with Santa. Being able to put on a performance for those children that morning brings joy to my heart and keeps me coming back each year. Another event is the Special Olympics held in Houghton Lake. Students from our school every year go and help setup and run the Special Olympics. Helping out and getting to talk to participants is an honor and has created new relationships with people. I want to be able to give even more back to my wonderful community through the National Honor Society by volunteering and helping as much as I can. Meeting new people, and helping them in ways that can change their life can have a permanent effect on one's self, and NHS opens that
Entering high school with little knowledge of seemed impossible to reach the level of National Honor Society but I set my mind the right way, move from regular classes to Advance Placement classes had lots of sleepless nights but I came out successful in the end, to reach my dreams of becoming a member of the National Honor Society and make them a reality. By reaching the National Honor Society I can show my family how strong I am, that I will be someone successful in the future. The best part of achieving the requirements for the National Honor Society was to accomplish the amount of community service hours. I attended the Relay For Life event, an American Cancer Society, on the behalf of the Amnesty International Laredo Branch. I experienced
With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
People become involved in community service for different reasons and it is up to the individual to realize if it is worthwhile and why they are helping others. Community service brings a nation together. Every country wants its community to be disciplined and work for change. Community service is the best way to inculcate responsibility into individuals. This is where I come in, as a volunteer, as an activist for a change and assistance. I have been inducted and a member of three unique clubs with a core purpose of community service and assistance to others. I have been apart of CSF, California Scholarship Federation, for three years and counting. Each system it is required for obtain fifteen hours of community service, whether be with an organization or school based activity. California Scholarship Federation is an exclusive community of college bound scholars who share resources, provide peer tutoring, and pursue success through community service and academic achievement. I became inducted into NHS, National Honor Society, my sophomore year. Since then I have been an active member participating in every community service opportunity our club participates in. In addition to the club's community service, we as members are required to obtain a certain amount of community service outside the club in order for our membership to not be revoked. NHS
I have participated in various community service projects; for example one in which as a class
I have always considered myself a very promising student. I have worked extremely hard and received high grades. I have a close knit group of friends and my teachers and I have mutual respect for each other .Although I would consider myself at this present stage ‘fulfilled’ something was missing. I realized it wasn’t a materialistic aspect of my life. Through a tragic incident I finally discovered what fit perfectly in that vacancy. The consecutive hospitalizations of my grandparents evoked great pain and sorrow. However, out of the scorching intensity of this tragedy I was warmed and comforted by realizing what I was devoid of: community service.
During my 2 years as a member of The National Honor Society, I have done multiple community services. The best part of doing services is watching others smile because of what I have done to help them better their lives. When I was part of Earth Day at my school, I traveled to the historical paterson great falls. To interact with children on how to reuse our resources to help our community become cleaner. The best part of doing this is that a week after our service, the children were beginning to take small steps by picking up trash off the parks.
In order to fulfill the 12 hours of community service requirement for Nutrition course 139 I applied with five organizations on the approved list. The organization that replied me the fastest was Open Heart Kitchen, they mostly operate in Pleasanton and Livermore areas. Their application and signing up for shift process gives a feeling that this organization is massive, and many individuals really care about the less fortunate. From observation and conversations with the site supervisor, I believe this organization relies on individual donations, small business donations and large corporate donations such as Safeway and Walmart. This organization also relies on volunteers to work every day, they get workers from students fulfilling their hours and resume, individuals fulfilling court orders, and those that just want to help the less fortunate.
Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
Though, the concept of community service is not very new its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and hold millions of young people all through the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include; social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society. Without community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibly or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live.
As an educated professional in my community, I would like to make a contribution to society and my community. My background in hours of community service has prepared me for this and shown me its value.
I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
