Learning the Importance of Cooking Cooking is a creation in the kitchen, a combination of raw materials, and the use of utensils to create a dish. Culture is a mixture of beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place or time. With both of these together, one can obtain a deeper knowledge of the connection between food and people. This generation’s people do not know the bare necessities of life, which is why a lot of people in the present day don't know how to cook. The convenience of fast food has made it much easier to forget about cooking in general. People see cooking as a chore, but it could be made more enjoyable. In most cultures, food plays an important part of daily life; changing the way someone eats and …show more content…
“Cooking gets a bad rap. People use the excuses: It’s time-consuming, inconvenient, or difficult. Who has hours to chop ingredients, monitor cooking times, and do all the other herculean work that preparing a meal can seemingly demand?”(Hyman) A lot of it depends on how a person thinks of cooking when it's time to do so. Yes, it’s very time consuming, inconvenient and difficult, but it all depends on what a person will cook. It doesn't have to be a gourmet ‘Gordon Ramsay’ styled meals every time, it can be something simple and fun. “Get everyone involved. Enlist help from family members — drag your kids away from their video games and ask them to measure ingredients, pull food from the fridge, or even chop veggies if they’re ready to take on this task. Decide on meals together to get everyone excited about what’s in …show more content…
Although cooking can get very messy, it’s relying on many others to have a connection with their families. “Home cooking is extremely important for health and it can change your life. He says home cooking has been in decline since 1960s. And it is no coincidence that as rates of home cooking decline, rates of obesity goes up.” (Brincat) A lot of people aren’t cooking because it's time consuming/messy, that’s why it’s necessary to make it fun! If there’s not preparation for what a person will cook, there’s a simple explanation why it’s so time consuming. For example: not checking to see if all the ingredients are there or measure them out beforehand etc.. Another thing that's a need to know is the basic cooking skills: how to hold and use a knife, follow the steps of the recipe, and
The definition of homemade has changed drastically throughout time. Rachel Jones recognizes this in her article “Homemade is the New Organic,” published in 2013 by The Atlantic. It is in this article that she explains how media nowadays has raised expectations on home cooking. Jones` purpose is to make readers aware of the unrecognizable and unrealistic expectations that the modern media subtly places on us when it comes to home cooking. Based on the content and the examples presented in the article, it appears as though the author`s intended audience is people who cook, or more specifically, mothers that cook. Jones begins building her credibility with past experiences and reputable sources, uses facts to back up her claims, and appeals to reader`s emotions.
In Michael Pollan’s “The End of Cooking” shares the message of what we are losing something important in this day and age because of all our pre-made and processed foods. This can be compared with Kothari’s “If You Are What You Eat, What Am I?” and her argument that food is part of one’s own identity. By using the examples from these two texts you can analyze the state of food and culture in the United States today. All of the processed and pre-made foods are causing people all across America to lose their sense of Culture. We no longer know what it’s like to make one of our cultures specialty dishes from scratch which can help people identify with their culture. This process helped newer generations see what it was like for those before them to cook on a daily basis and could help them identify your sense of culture.
Food has been used as a tool by many cultures as movements to help with their culture become recognized, to identify their way of being, and to show their class and status. By exploring different author’s articles, and movie clips this will be visible. Food has created many cultures to explore these outlets and in return has had a positive impact on their culture.
Even though I still curl my lip at the "Easter soup" (a vile concoction of vinegar and curdled milk that's sure to trigger acid reflux), I realize that it is a valuable skill to be able to cook for yourself. To be able to cook something that you like is to have the entire culinary world in the palm of your hand. After taking cooking lessons for the first time in third grade, I was constantly on the search for new recipes. I cooked anything that sounded good--Italian food, Korean food, French food, but certainly not Polish food!
Using canned foods and instant sauces saved women the time of preparing meat and vegetables and seemingly turned cooking into a two-step process: empty ingredients into a pan and placing the pan in the oven. My mom can attest to this as she often resorts to casseroles when the family schedule becomes hectic. The quick preparation of the meal and slow cooking in the oven takes away from the time my mom spends laboring in the kitchen and allows her to use that time on other tasks around the house or simply to spend more time with my family. Shopping for casseroles includes an assortment of inexpensive ingredients, which can fill the plates of the entire family. Casseroles not only call for cheap ingredients but also a rather short list of them. The growing popularity began to slow as people relied on canned food, left overs, and instant sauces. Despite the simplicity of the dish, my mom enjoys using her creativity with the casserole dishes and has created many recipes of her own for our
Children are not actually making food, and they do not have to make them so they can eat. They are doing it for fun, but if you are learning to cook when you actually need to eat it makes it more stressful. Finally, when children practice cooking it is for fun, and they are enjoying it. They are enjoying what they are doing. This will teach them that doing adult things, such as cooking, more enjoyable.
This statement by Druckman portrays the belief that women cook for the emotional experience while men cook for the technical experience. Research conducted by Marjorie DeVault (1991) suggests wives and mothers cook as a way to show their love to their family. Similarly, research by Cairns, Johnston, and Baumann (2010) discusses women’s emotional responses to cooking for their family and friends. Both studies highlight the emotion and nurture women feel as they cook for others. The studies’ discussion about the nurturing aspect of cooking demonstrates the traditional feminine belief that women cook in order to nurture their families as discussed by Friedan (1963) and Hochschild
Food is profoundly in American’s culture it is like a social essential necessity. America has a mixture of different ethnicities and although they may have their own food everyone eats similar foods and if one does not it will set a social barrier. Food can be for gift giving, simple generosity or even in exchange for something. Usually, food is shared and many tend to sit together at a specific mealtime it may vary from friends, parents, children or visitors or, strangers, new people. In an occasion like this it somehow becomes a symbol of love as they all come together into an eating event. Aside from just love, there ...
I’ve ended up as a cook through a series of serendipitous events, but I think that no matter what I would have ended up doing, I would have ultimately made it about bringing people together — about fostering community, fostering goodwill. Cooking is a very straightforward way of doing that, because eating is such a social act. People, by their very nature, want to come together around the table and eat. People are hungry for an excuse to come together and eat — to come together and do anything,
When I first learned to cook about six years ago, there were no magazine articles or books in bookstores explaining how to cook; there were only cookbooks with recipes for one to decipher. Today, the articles and books that explain how to cook are minimal. Not everyone can compete with Julia Child in cooking gourmet food with the menu devised in our minds without referring to cookbooks, but many of us can learn to cook effectively. A step-by-step process should be followed to learn how to cook successfully.
Eating out is not always a convenient option, or even the best option. Cooking at home
When families eat at home they know everything that has been added in their meal and know the cleanliness of their own kitchen. Moreover, they know if the food was washed and cooked well. At home they know that the cook has washed his/her hands. Also at home they know their hygiene.
A culinary chef has many skills and responsibilities that are not only necessary and useful, but also required to succeed. According to the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Chefs and head cooks oversee the daily food preparation at restaurants and other places where food is served. They direct kitchen staff and handle any food-related concerns.” (“Chefs and Head Cook”) I have three main reasons for choosing the culinary field. The first is I have a lot of experience with and around kitchens and I know I really enjoy the atmosphere of a kitchen. Secondly, I am talented in cooking and I have succeeded in the programs I have already been a part of for culinary. The final reason for choosing Culinary Arts is that
Families today just do not seem to spend time with each other. The mother and father both have jobs and tend to not be home for the children after school therefore causing more independence among each member of the family. Children that have more independence make mistakes on their own without being warned about them. Independent children have no guidance and get out of hand because there is not a strong boss type figure around most of the time to help distinguish the difference between right and wrong. Eating dinner as a family is a major tradition that has been forgotten as the years have gone by and caused more separation among the family. A family 50 years ago that did not eat dinner together would be a strange one but today it seems to be of the norm. Once again, the job affects this aspect of the family as well. People are just too busy at work or too tired to even participate in dinner at home anymore. Either families just do not have time for each other anymore or they just are not together due to divorce.
Good cooking doesn’t always come naturally, but when skill’s and/or talents are perfected strengths such as cooking can become fun or even a hobby. Good cooking is something that takes time and skill and good cooking can’t be rushed otherwise the food does not come out the way it is supposed to. Another key factor of good cooking is to always know what is going on and what the next step in the process is.
