They love to eat. They have to eat. Eating just makes them feel good. Who? Americans. The urge to consume food must be satisfied every single day, in fact a few times a day. American food brands and products are patronized by its consumers. Although America has a cultural mix of cuisines they are Americanized. Food in American represents a culture, in which can reflect the lifestyle and socioeconomic status of one. Here one is inundated by food.
Food is profoundly in American’s culture it is like a social essential necessity. America has a mixture of different ethnicities and although they may have their own food everyone eats similar foods and if one does not it will set a social barrier. Food can be for gift giving, simple generosity or even in exchange for something. Usually, food is shared and many tend to sit together at a specific mealtime it may vary from friends, parents, children or visitors or, strangers, new people. In the writing “If You Are What You Eat, Then What Am I?” Geeta Kothari describes the differences in the American and Indian cultures through her unique description of the food differences. As a little Indian-American girl, Kothari curiously wanted to eat what of kids her age ate, tuna salad sandwich, hot dogs, and foods of such nature. Kothari describes her first encounter with a can of tuna fish as it looks “pink and shiny, like an internal organ” (947). As Kothari ages, it becomes clear that she sees American food much the way her parents saw it- “repugnant… meat byproducts… glued together by chemicals and fat” (947). Even though Kothari describes American food as strange, disgusting, and foreign; it was also “infidelity” to eat it (951).

In Michael Pollan’s “The End of Cooking” shares the message of what we are losing something important in this day and age because of all our pre-made and processed foods. This can be compared with Kothari’s “If You Are What You Eat, What Am I?” and her argument that food is part of one’s own identity. By using the examples from these two texts you can analyze the state of food and culture in the United States today. All of the processed and pre-made foods are causing people all across America to lose their sense of Culture. We no longer know what it’s like to make one of our cultures specialty dishes from scratch which can help people identify with their culture. This process helped newer generations see what it was like for those before them to cook on a daily basis and could help them identify your sense of culture.
Americans should eliminate their regular consumption of animal products and processed foods. This type of diet leads to preventable and expensive health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and even death. Most Americans don’t realize that the majority of the food being advertised to them is literal garbage that’s infusing their bodies with toxins on a daily basis. As Americans, we take pride and joy in our food, given the fact that it’s so darn tasty. We find comfort in eating a cheeseburger with French fries and slurping down a 44-ounce cola. However, what we eat has a far more detrimental effect on our health than most of us are aware of. To some, making the switch to a raw food diet might seem to be taking a drastic measure.

Most Americans do not care enough to take a look at the nutritional values of the food that he or she is consuming. That is why America has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. This is a serious problem because one in every three adults is obese, and one in every six children is obese. There are many factors that go into the regular American diet, but most of those factors are not appealing nor is it healthy. Americans put way too much processed food into their daily diet. Some would say that other countries diets superior the American diet because of nutritional values that it carries. Other countries have proven that an active lifestyle is a huge element in the average weight of the country. The way in which we choose our foods can stem from events that occur during early childhood. When I lived in Jamaica as a child, I was only fed 'Jamaican style' cuisine. This involved lots of rice with peas, chicken, jerked pork, etc. However, I remember that my parents would take my brothers and I out to restaurants a few times a year as a treat. Our favourite place was a specific Chinese restaurant in a tourist area nearby our house. The food was prepared by Chinese workers and we got to experience what we believed was authentic Chinese cuisine. Another place in which we would enjoy was KFC. KFC represented an exotic 'Other' which allowed us to experience a different kind of social space. According to Finkelstein, this is known as an 'America place'. It is world-famous American food. However, our reason for gathering to eat and share cultures sometimes becomes warped by the opinion of the government, other times by society/ other cultures. The American culture has been warped through both and the fact that “Food should never be a joyless experience” (Sandor, Elix Katz) has completely left the picture that comes to mind when eating is mentioned. Americans eat for the solely to be putting food in their mouths which explains, to an extent, why they are so obese as well as unhappy when eating. One should enjoy what they consume at the time one consumes food. Think of a hearty meal like a steak with a baked potato and steamed broccoli, would you want to rush through it? Or rather, sit and enjoy the flavors of the food and the ambience around you, with possibly a conversation you might partake in? Oftentimes we say we would rather enjoy it, but in actuality we rush through the eating and do not enjoy the taste of the item being consumed.

It is almost as if our eating habits are devolving, from a moral and traditional point of view. The great America, the land of the free and brave. The land of great things and being successful, “living the good life.” These attributes highlight some irony, especially in our food culture. Is the American food culture successful?
