UC Prompt #7 The biggest impact I have made to my community is through community service. Although I also participate in school clubs that fundraise to fight poverty in my neighborhood, I feel that through volunteering I have had a greater influence. I believe this as through my volunteer work as a teacher’s assistant in a confirmation class at my local parish, I have made a positive impact on the lives of the local youth. As an assistant in a confirmation class, I help teach the class by going over biblical passages, talking about our faith and helping out at parish events. In addition, I try to be a role model for my students, as they are only high school freshman, and are nearing their very own college application process. Growing up
I help out my family and community in several ways. I have volunteered to help coach cheerleading at Jefferson Elementary School everyday after school. I work at Mattoon Academy of Gymnastics and coach several classes and their gymnastics team. I also work in my church's nursery on Sundays. Being a role model for all of the kids I coach and take care of means a lot to me because they look up to me and want to follow in my footsteps. I am dedicated to helping out our community and school, because it warms my heart and soul. Seneca said in about 40 to 60 A.D. that you should “be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favors you have received.” In other words you should not boast about the numerous projects you have accomplished and how much physical work you executed, but rather pride yourself on how you helped people in community and school, and how you have affected their lives with positive means. I feel life is joyous and it should be the feeling everyone illustrates, and this is exactly what keeps me functioning in the stressful world today. I find comfort in helping others to make their lives a little more like heaven and this comfort motivates me to perform copious service projects to the best of my capability whenever I find the time. Time is fair to the rich, the poor, and to every race, because time is equal and gives everyone 24 hours daily to accomplish their required tasks. Because time is so valuable and I am occupied by difficult advanced placement and honor classes and juggle school, clubs, sports, and friends, I joined Key Club, a high school division of the adult service club, Kiwanis. Key Club opened new doors to make every extra minute count towards helping others.
My first experience that involved contribution to a community was in an organization known as girls as pearls. In this organization we participated in many volunteer activities, both domestic and global such as making dresses for girls in africa or volunteering at the samaritan ministry. Consequently, this early volunteerism experience influenced my involvement in the community as a high school student. I became involved in organizations such as key club, an organization focused in volunteerism. Additionally, I began to tutor middle school students and volunteering at the local church. Many of the volunteer activities that I have participate in involved children and this due to the reason that I want to be able to become a positive guide and role model for children. I want to contribute to their motivation of continuing their education and to reach for goals that they believe they can achieve. My senior year of high school alone, I completed over 160 hours of community service. Being a full-time student and a part-time worker, unfortunately does not allow for much spare time, but whenever I do have a chance, I always volunteer through my youth group in church. One of my biggest goals in life is being able to give back to the community on a much bigger scale. Ultimately, I hope to even go full circle and give scholarships to Hispanic student like me.
I have done a lot of community service at Moundville Nursing Home from 2007-2014. I answered the phone and I sat with the sick patients. I helped in the kitchen and I would bring their supper to their rooms. I helped fed some of the patients because they couldn’t feed themselves. My favorite was when I volunteered for their Halloween festival. I also helped the nursing home with their trunk-a-treat on Halloween. I would go downtown with them and I would pass out candy to the sweet little kids. The whole Moundville community would come and enjoy themselves. Community service means to me “service before self”. This phrase has been engraved in my heart since I was a young girl. Since I was born, both of my parents have worked in the same nursing home. I was always in and out whether it was because we didn't have a babysitter that day or I just wanted to play with the facility cat. As I began growing older the in’s and out’s became hours of sitting in my mom’s office helping her file papers or with my dad running around the facility delivering toothbrushes and lotions to rooms. Summers became volunteering in the Activities Department, interacting with the elderly through crafts, painting nails, board games or just chatting away. I realized that these simplest of acts brought happiness to them, it was incredible. I realized what a difference I could make, even if it was small. These moments so early in my life are why I believe I'm so devoted and truly passionate about community service. Since, then I have done everything to immerse myself in my community and school. From volunteering at my local hospital, food bank and soup kitchen, to fundraising for polio, or traveling to Baja California with my club to start recycling and water filter programs. Finally I feel like I show service, which is the act of assistance, through my community service. I helped the school with the school play my freshman and sophomore years, working concession stands whenever I am able to, and helping the technology department at the school over the summer. I also help in other places in the community. For example every year I try to help put on a thanksgiving dinner for those in need with my church. This skill will help me throughout my life because it shows how important it is to help others.

I can also make a difference in the community where I live. Last year my class held a car wash to raise money for the Animal Shelter. We went to visit the dogs there and I realized that the money we raised made a difference for some of them.
My plan after college is to become a Sociologist or a Social Worker. With a college degree in one of these areas, I hope to impact my community in various ways. First, with the knowledge obtained from college, I hope to counsel with young people who are on the verge of going astray. In today's society, there are so many negative factors that influence young people. I want to help them understand the importance of setting goals and striving to become productive citizens. I also want to give them a sense of hope that with perseverance, they can become great role models for other young people.
What I want to impact the most is the New York community itself. I want to bring smiles to each individual I interact with. What I learned as a high school student is the whole purpose of life is not solely about self-improvements, but consist of what can I do for others. To leave an impact is to be selfless and only through external signs can I shift from this "me"-focus prospective to a "we" state of mind. From experience, I understand the happiness found through serving others. These external actions, even on a small scale, has a greater ripple effect. At the sight of these ripples there are contentment that follow throughout my life. The enjoyment I get from community service and tutoring I want to share it with the Colombia community.
As a civically engaged member of Carrollton, I participate in multiple events in my community that consist of volunteering at my church, being a part of my school and clubs, and helping with local event. What I spend most of my time doing outside of school is being a teacher’s assistant at Mary Immaculate for 4th graders and helping with church events like Communions and Confirmations. Being able to teach others is satisfying as I also learn from them and know that I am contributing to my community in the best way I can.

These experiences have afforded me opportunities to demonstrate my gifts and talents that had previously gone undiscovered. Through different community service opportunities, I either learned something new about myself or I was reassured something. These qualities include that I am creative, reliable, open-minded, passionate, and an effective team player. Community service changed my life by developing my character through enhancing my transferable skills, which allowed me to see the world differently. Everyone, from all walks of life, needs to in some way, shape, or form give back to the community because it will not only benefit the less fortunate but it will benefit the volunteers as well.
