Conversations surrounding identity are vital to the success of a social worker. Our personal identities have the ability to influence how we interact with clients, especially those from cultures and races that are different from our own. As individuals, we create our own beliefs and values but through the process of self-reflection and self - exploration we are able to develop an understanding of ourselves and our own true beliefs. 1. There are many aspects of identity and just as Spencer (2001) suggested, the idea of identity and privilege is more than just identifying my ethnicity, but it is also includes gender, sexual orientation, class, religion and abled bodied status identities, all of which Spencer (2008) declared he possessed. Yes, I identify as a young, black woman, all inferior and dehumanizing characteristics to most, but growing up on the island of Bermuda, I lived in a two – parent home, a privilege that unfortunately some of my clients may not experience in the future. Fortunate for me, my family provided for me and I never went without, another privilege that sadly some do not have. Living in Bermuda, I have never had to be consciously aware of my skin colour, and it’s unfortunate but my reality. In the future, this article will affect my future practice in social work because from this article I got the impression that it is important to focus on diversity and having an appreciation for the uniqueness of my future clients. It’s the idea of working with clients who are being oppressed because of the characteristics of their identity. In a society, the issues of social justice are usually as direct result of the rules of the society that are generally created by those of higher power and privilege. Clients are impacted at the societal level because of laws that perpetuate their oppressive status. Ideas of community, social progress, and culture are an ever-evolving social work issue. How do we as social workers choose to approach needs of groups and communities at the macro level? In order to grasp an understanding of true helping systems it is important for one to have a range of knowledge to justly participate within the formal helping structures an models that comprise of the social work field. In attempt to create our identity as active justice based social workers it is essential for one to conceptualize the framework of intersectionality. According to Kirsten-Ashmen, “Intersectionality involves the idea that people are complex and can belong to multiple, overlapping diverse groups “The intersectional perspective acknowledge the breath of the human experience, instead of conceptualizing social relationships and identities separately in terms of either race or class or gender or age or sexual orientation”; rather an intersectional approach focuses on the “interactional affects” of belonging to multiple groups (p. 48).” In order to remain committed to intersectionality I will apply theories and models to a progressing community in the city of Boston. A critical analysis of the strengths and weakness within each theory related to the specific community will be discussed. I will expose the intersecting layers, allowing for identity development through the lens of the macro social worker. I will begin by discussing my experience through the research process with my team members. An intersectional view of Mock’s (2014) multiple identities and social locations, for instance, reveals the presence of both oppressed and privileged identities: she is a biracial (Hawaiian and Black), trans, able-bodied, woman who grew up in a lower-working class family, although has since achieved a higher socioeconomic status. Many of her identities are marginalized, as they are oppressed by the white-dominant, heteronormative, cisnormative, middle-class patriarchal privileged society that surrounded her throughout her life. In social work profession, it is notably important that a practitioner be able recognize aspects of their decision making that may be motivated by uncontrollable circumstances such as past experiences, family values, and personal values. Uncontrollable circumstances, such as the examples listed above, all attribute to personal biases a practitioner may display when working with individuals, groups, families, or communities. A personal bias is the negative or positive perspective or demeanor, both knowingly and unknowingly, of any particular individual, or group of individuals, based on different diversity factors that may skew the way that an individual interacts or perceives an individual or group (Miller, Cahn, Anderson-Nathe, Cause, Bender, 2013). Therefore, as a social worker, the importance of practicing self-awareness is that it helps the practitioner to shuffle through personal biases, and in return, aid in social justice and be effectively responsive to diversity factors in the practice setting (Bender, Negi, Fowler, 2010).
Identity is one of the main questions throughout all of our readings, because it is hard for people to accept who they are in society. Accepting their identity as a minority with little if any freedoms sparks many of the social problems which I will show happening in all communities and cultures. The main issue we will discuss is how social environments effect the search for identity. The Mexicans in the U.S. module gives us examples how Mexicans try to keep their customs while living in a discriminated environment by the Whites. This module also gives us examples how people are searching for personal identity while struggling with cultural traditions. Finally, the African-American module gives us more examples to compare with the Mexicans in the U.S. module, because these readings deal with Blacks finding personal identity also through discrimination from the Whites. To properly understand the theme of identity, we must first look the factors influencing it.
According to Dei & Caliste (2000), this form of modern racism is based, among others, on conditions that are socially created which maintain and reinforce such environment. A critical understanding of the structural patterns, the identity of the dominant group, and their social location necessitates that these practices be identified. Second, being aware of the invisibility of whiteness can dismantle the system of oppression (Yee, 2005, p. 90). Recognition is not enough since social service workers collude with the status quo. Despite recognizing its existence, they have failed to see themselves as implicated in the same structure that oppresses them. Third, when systematic oppression and the clandestine identity of the whites have been concretized, discussion can be directed from a common generalization of the whites to a more contemporary understanding of the patterns of racism (ibid, p. 91). There must be a conscious exposure of the dominant group’s action as inviolable and natural; any analysis must reveal what identity and culture operate to further commit this systemic form of oppression and racism in the practice. Lastly and importantly, an effective and meaningful solution to the problem necessitates an understanding of whiteness and oppression (ibid, p. 95). The task of identifying my social identity was easier said than done. I acknowledged the somewhat privilege I encounter along with the oppression I endure. In retrospect, my social identity unambiguously resembles a coin where on one side oppression lies with dirt rusting but on the flip side privilege stares right back at me, shining bright. I initially could not see the benefits since I’m a low income college student. I became too encompassed with one side of the coin. After we learned what the word, privilege, indeed meant, I realized the various facets of my life in which that word could apply. There is an international human rights law that protects human beings against the government and that limits the government’s power on their people. Human rights are protected by the law to protect people or groups against any type of discriminations. There are different organizations that promote and protect human rights. Social workers should also protect and fight for their clients’ human rights. It’s important for social workers to be knowledgeable about human rights so they can be able to advocate for their clients. Social work theorist, defines oppression as “relations that divide people into dominant or superior groups and subordinate or inferior ones. One’s cultural identity consists of their race, gender, socioeconomic status, age, religion, and so on. Being aware of your own cultural identity is just as important as being aware of other’s. People’s cultural identity defines who they are, the privilege (or lack of privilege) they receive, and how society views them. It is important to understand that White individuals have more privileges than individuals of color. White individuals do not experience detriment and difficulties due specifically to their skin color and instead receive advantages. White privilege is defined as benefits that white individuals have that people of color do not (Kendall, 2012). The following walks through my personal cultural background, how it was shaped, defined, and developed, and limitations to my personal competencies.
The social work profession is not only about the knowledge of the theories, ethical guidelines, values and principles of the profession, but also it’s about applying that knowledge to everyday situations. It is a profession dedicated to enhancing human capacity to solve complex social problems in order to create a more humane and just society (Arizona State University, 2013). In the profession, social workers are encourage to use their skills such as their critical thinking and especially their decision-making skills. In addition, they work in a number of different settings with diverse individuals. Although dilemmas will arise, social workers need to be culturally competent to work with others and to avoid breaching any ethical standards.
Social justice is a core value in the social work field. We define social justice as, “all citizens would possess equal fundamental rights, protection, opportunities, obligations and social benefits (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2015, p. 29). Unfortunately, we understand there are many members in today’s society that are not receiving social justice. Some may not want help and believe that s/he is able to do it on their own and then there are the individuals that we may not know about that could really use our help. Our jobs as social workers is to help those who need help no matter if they are rich, poor, disabled, white, Hispanic, it does not matter because everyone should be treated equally. As NASW states, “The original mission of social work had much to do with championing the rights of society’s most vulnerable members, from children to homeless people to the physically disabled” (NASW: National Association of Social Workers, 2015, para. 1).
Firstly, cultural tensions in social work practice are multifaceted; social workers are always at the center of these tensions; social workers are positioned to be agents of cultural acculturation, so they must be critical to their own socio-organizational position. The second is that visible minority social workers encounter a very different type of cultural tension. They tend to walk an extra fine line between their personal and professional life domains due to their various cultural backgrounds. Among an array of Values from The Code of Ethics (TCE) of social work Value 1 dictates that as social workers we must respect the dignity of our clients and refrain from passing judgement onto them (Canadian Association of Social Work, 2005, pg.7). As a social worker, it is important to follow this value as it prevents the distancing of the client from the worker as the client will have a better chance of opening up to someone who does not instantly tell them what to do or reprimand them for their actions or non-action in their lives.
