Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that’s why I succeed.“ Some basketball players live by this quote, others do not. Players who often do are encouraging and full of effort. Then, there are other players who do not think they need any advice, think they fully understand the game of basketball, and that they can tell other players what to do. Some players do not give any effort at all. Basketball players are different, but most fit in three categories: encouraging and positive, over-confident and bossy, or lazy and effortless.
Encouraging and positive players are the ones to follow and be engaged with. Even if they do something incorrectly or make a mistake, positivity is key. Most of these types of players give their best effort to get better. They encourage others when needed, and enjoy doing so. Basketball is not just a sport for them, it is much more. Even when they are frustrated, this type of player never quits. These players have a high intellect and understanding of how effort can make them successful. Overall, all basketball players should ideally be encouraging and

optimistic. In addition there is the bossy, overconfident type of basketball player.
I am sure anyone that plays could name off at least one player like this whom played on his or her team. Bossy and overconfident players tend to be the hardest to get along with, simply because they believe what they do is the best way to do it, speaking generically. Because of their overconfidence, these players boss others around so they do what that player wants them to do. Coaches hate working with these kinds of players because they are stubborn and do not want to change their ways. This saying that basketball players like this do not usually reach their goals, caused by their controlling and overconfident
personality. Furthermore, lazy players do not usually achieve much. These kinds of players are also hard to work with when you are a hardworking teammate, much like the bossy and overconfident players. For example, let us say there is seven seconds left in a game and you are down by one. The opposing team has possession. The lazy and effortless player does not play defense because he or she does not, “feel like it,” causing the loss of the game. These kinds of situations happen all of the time because of lazy players. Most coaches do not tolerate laziness. Many kids think they can play and they are fantastic players, but laziness trumps all. All professional basketball players got there not only because of their skills, but mainly hard work. All in all, most basketball players are positive, bossy, or effortless. Most positive players are dedicated. Bossy players tend to not be treated with respect because of how they act towards teammates. Really lazy players miss out of opportunities. So if a person plays basketball, they should really pay attention on how he or she acts. Positivity can help someone achieve his or her dreams. Being bossy or effortless can shatter someone’s dreams. Being an optimistic and encouraging player is the best category to mold into.
Basketball Rule #2 (pg.51) “(Random text from Dad) Hustle dig, grind push, run fast, change pivot, chase pull, aim shoot, work smart, live smarter, play hard, practice harder”, this correlates because at a practice a couple pages later his coach has them do sprints and he says, “The winner doesn’t have to practice today” He is in the lead and he says, “ I let him win and get ready to practice harder”
"It’s easy to talk about; it’s easy to sum it up when you just talk about practice. We sittin' in here, I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we in here talkin' about practice. I mean listen, we talking bout practice. Not a game, not a game, not a game. We talking bout practice. Not a game, not a, not a, not the game that I go out there and die for, and play every game like it’s my last. Not the game. We talking' bout practice, man.”- Allen Iverson on his lack of effort in practice in an interview with the press conference when they asked him about missing a practice. Do you now label him as a thug or just an arrogant asshole? It’s true many people would never give this guy another chance to try to clean up his name and would be perceived as arrogant no matter what he does after this interview. People are arrogant towards Allen Iverson because of the way he speaks in this interview. People can understand what he is trying to say, but they are being subjective to what they are hearing because he is not using correct English.
The NBA is well known for the number of amazing professional athletes it has had over the years. Some of the most gifted and talented individuals come through the NBA and one of the better-known superstars is none other than Kobe Bryant. For years people have wondered what makes Bryant so successful. The main contributors that lead to Kobe Bryant’s success is his hard work and dedication, his mindset, his natural ability’s and talent, and the people that have helped him throughout his life. Kobe Bryant was very successful in the NBA because of the amount of hard work he has put in, the people in his life, his relentless determination and his god given natural abilities.
Throughout the book “Leading with the Heart,” I read about prime examples of the following leadership theories: transformational leadership, trait theory, behavioral theory, and situational leadership. He recommended that leaders begin with the trait theory when beginning the selection process when starting his or her organization. In chapter one and as well as chapter two, Coach K refers to coachable players. Meaning, players or members that do not mind being taught and learning; willing to take a back seat to someone else in charge. Establish right away in the first meeting the only rule for the team: “Don’t do anything that’s detrimental to yourself, because if it is detrimental to you, it will be detrimental to our program (Krzyzewski, 2000, p.4). He reiterates that leaders must be very selective in this process, because the people you select represent you as the leader, and your company. In some cases leaders must sacrifice some skill and talent for people who have outstanding character. “Character and respect will outlast talent when talent can’t see past themselves.” Krzyzewski mentions that he will sign a kid who has the character of a leader and train them to gain the skill necessary down the road. I believe that this is why the Duke Men’s basketball program is very successful because he picks
Basketball, the sport that has been around for decades. An abundant amount of people play the sport. In my opinion, it’s one of the finest sports invented. The sport itself is mentally and physically challenging. I will be explaining how to play the sport, the history of basketball, and why you should play basketball.
Michael Jordan once said “I will not let anything get in the way of me and my competitive enthusiasm to win”. This have help people of all ages get through their burdens and do something they love instead of doing some negative. For many people basketball has become more than a game, it’s the way of life. The American game of basketball has traveled now, it’s played by more than 250 million people worldwide.
Personal interview. 27 Oct. 2013. Coffey, Delice. “Understanding Confidence.” Sports Psychology For Basketball.
“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. The narrator learns that if you persevere, work hard, and have confidence, your dreams may come true. In How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place
Basketball is supposed to be a team sport. A team can constant of ten or twelve players but only five can compete at a team. Five players on the court working together to win. Teammates are supposed to have their teammates back. Fight to the very end for their team to get a win. This is not always true. Players have their own way of doing things. They think a team should be like this or that, but they are players who do the right things for the team. I have experienced this from my team. My teammates cab be categorized based on their performance as the “Jankin’ Jerseys”, the “Limitless LeBrons”, and the “Paparazzi Peters.”
Sports are often identified to have positive influences on many individuals. The sports industry is growing worldwide, especially the basketball industry, which is regarded in second place behind football. The global prevalence of basketball is unquestionable, especially among the young. Basketball is a dynamic team sport that involves a pattern of alternating, active, and skilled movement activities. There are compound demands that require a mixture of individual skills, team plays, strategies, and motivational aspects.
Basketball seems to get into your blood. It is said by those who play, "You eat, you sleep and you play basketball." When I was a little girl all I wanted to be was a professional basketball player. I couldn't count how many times I pounded that dumb ball in our driveway until it was too dark to see, then I would play for hours more by the porch light. Now I realize that was only childish insanity. Back then they didn’t even have a girls’ profession basketball league in the states. However, that didn't stop me from walking away empty handed. One thing I learned was how to prepare oneself for life. Well, at least, how to prepare oneself for a game.
Within an organizational work unit, subordinates become part of the in-group or the out-group based on how well they work with the leader and how well the leader works with them (Northouse, 2013). This theory can also be applied to the coach’s leadership style of the Golden State Warriors. Team players such as the star players of the team may be a part of the in-group. These players expand their role responsibilities, due to how well they work with the coach. Players in the in-group receive more information, influence, confidence, and concern from their coaches than do out-group players (Northouse,
“Life is like a basketball, it bounces up and down.” I love basketball. I feel affection for the taste of victory, when you win a game. However, I also find losing a worthwhile experience. I worship the feeling where you score a point. It’s slow motion at first, as you gaze at the shot you’ve made, wondering if it is going to manage. Then the taste of your salty sweat and the sound of your pounding heart are back in action. *Swoosh* the ball rapidly swirls into the hoop and falls through the net. It is so stunning, and so breath-taking. “Beautiful shot! BEAUTIFUL!” the coach would yell. Everyone would give a little cheer, and I would smile and look down. I am proud to make the shot, but not cocky about it. It’s for the team, teamwork… I would think in my head. Afterwards, I would be focusing on how to get my head completely into the game, that’s how addicting it is.
Contrary to popular belief basketball is not just a sport; in fact the way many players act off the court is the kind of attitude they bring with them to the game. Many times the way a player plays, or the way people rate his gameplay, is because of the way he acts on the court. I believe that there are four main types of players, and from these many more branch off. The four categories are, the ‘Ball Hog’, the ‘Talker’, the ‘Hot Head’, and the ‘Laid Back’.
