Steve Chan- In the 2nd quarter of IB Chemistry the class has focused on balancing chemical equations, converting between chemistry units, finding correct formulas, and the properties of gases. The labs involved discovering more about chemical reactions, calculating the volume of a gas, and solution preparation. When we return in the 3rd quarter we will be studying the topic of atomic structure. Steve continues to struggle on the exams for class. He has made more of an effort to solve sample problems in class but often does not attempt the practice problems students are asked to do outside of class. To be successful he will need to apply more effort to practicing chemistry. Reading the text before we start topics in class could also be beneficial for him as well. He has shown a strong interest in lab experiments and able to follow most directions independently while performing the labs.

When we return in the 3rd quarter we will be studying the topic of atomic structure. Saarthak continues to do well in chemistry. He often participates in class by solving sample problems and asking questions. A few times he has forgotten to complete the practice problems students are asked to do outside of class or has misplaced his lab papers for experiments. These instances have not resulted in a drop in his test grades however as he does well in preparing for exams. He takes particular interest in the lab portion of class and is always excited to try new chemistry

This book ties into our first semester of learning about chemistry. Learning how things react with each other played a huge role in his experiment. Learning the charges and what each type of atom does is very important when working in this field. Being able to do the equations of heat transfer and how the heat transfers connects to the type of things David had to know and what he encountered. Many concepts that were learned by David were also learned by our class this year. A large amount of the things we did tie into this book but David did it in a larger scale and took it a little bit further.
In the past, Sam’s family has not been very supportive. However we know that parental feedback can greatly help assess a strategy that has been trialed with a student. By getting Sam’s parents on board with monitoring his academic and social behavior, the teacher can thoroughly assess Sam’ progress and the effectiveness of the introduced strategies, with their feedback.
I have always been inspired by the workings of chemistry and mathematics. My studies of these subjects have developed my understanding and have made me pursue my interest in these two topics. I want to take up chemistry as it involves a large amount of mathematics which I value and understand to be challenging, yet very enjoyable, as there is always an alternative route to obtain the answer. Additionally, I am drawn to the course because it is a mixture of all these exacting subjects, forming a degree that is very demanding and stimulating. Chemists are constantly thinking of new ways to produce viable drugs containing different isomers to improve the pharmaceutical sector using mathematical equations. Chemistry is about innovation, applying information to new areas and how to do things better than they were before, the degree appeals to and fascinates me.
In the book, “The Element” by Ken Robinson he discusses how different education systems all over the world are but focuses on the education system in the United States. The reason being is that he believes that there are faults that need to be fixed because it doesn’t focus on the students individually and discovering their “element” but, on academics, business and state testing. Robinson claims that education itself is supposed to be a process in which it develops all resources.
Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.

The teacher could add more creative activities to her curriculum to engage Jacob. Instead of memorizing what a list of vocabulary words are, students could be asked to create a story using those words. They would be assessed based on the content and whether or not they understand how to use the words would be evident when put to practice. Not only would this benefit Jacob by allowing him to be engaged and creative in his own education, he would demonstrate his understanding of the words and their meanings. This would also benefit the other students for the same reason. Another way to incorporate creativity into the classroom would be to use group work and movement in the classroom. Jacob’s instructor can include group work in order to enhance students’ learning because it allows the students to work together, talk about what they do and do not understand, what they do and do not agree on, and help each other when someone is struggling. By doing this, Jacob will have a better opportunity to connect with his peers and learn with them. This will also give every student the opportunity to stand up and move around during the day and get an outlet to talk and express themselves. Although this could lead to students taking advantage of these opportunities, by getting off task or running around the classroom, if done correctly, this could help Jacob in a myriad of ways. According to someone, students learning from other students can prove to be very beneficial. Jacob will improve his test scores if he can work with other students who are able and willing to help him learn. This also allows him to express his creative side by contributing verbally to the group work and making connections with
He felt that it might help but it is very hard for him to speak up for himself. We agreed that we will practice assertiveness skills in session so he can eventually try it on his own. Based on the systems theory, I explained how changing his behavior can change the behavior of the people he interacts
The growing relevance of Chemical Engineering in today’s world, from energy & oil industries to pharmaceuticals & biotechnology, and a keen desire for applying this knowledge in interrelated spheres motivates me to pursue a Master’s degree in this field. My interest in science goes back to the time when I was in school. We had a young and enthusiastic teacher who took us on field trips and visits to science fairs and museums. This nascent interest has only burgeoned through my years in school and high school, as I have learnt more about the subject. In the long run, I see myself as a part of a leading research group, either as a faculty member or in the R&D department of an organisation contributing my bit to the field of Chemical Engineering. As a research scientist, I hope to make a difference in this field and learn more through the innovative challenges.

I was fortunate enough to take Advanced Placement Chemistry. During my time in this class, I learned a great deal about this expansive subject. Though very hard and challenging, this class was very rewarding. My High School does not offer many classes that involve critical thinking on a college level. Throughout the course, I realized how extremely interesting chemistry really was. I learned in depth electron transport, equilibrium constants, and thermodynamics. Learning how complex some simple everyday occurrences are was fascinating. The burning of a candle may seem simple from the view of a naked eye. On a chemical stand point, it is complex as a rocket taking off. Everybody knows that if you run an electrical current through water, you will be electrocuted. However, this is only due to the electrolytes dissolved in the water providing a road of positive and negative charges for the current to flow. Pure water does not allow for the flow of a current because there are no electrolytes. To me, learning on such a small scale is more enjoyable than learning on a regular or large scale. The small scale of chemistry affects everything on the regular and large scale. The importance of chemistry is what makes it so
