Hello class,
This week I chose to take the long version of the IPIP-NEO personality test. I feel that the results described me perfectly, even though I already knew. The descriptions of the different categories were described thoroughly. The test is based on the five personality traits that are believed to be the basic dimensions of personalities. These traits are extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, I will share the information provided from these categories. This was a long test, with three hundred questions, I felt like it was very informative.
Extraversion – 86% - The test states I am sociable, outgoing, energetic, and lively. I also prefer to be around people much of the time. I got all high scores in the sub-categories, which fits me perfectly. I am always energetic, and love to be around people.

You are pleasant, sympathetic, and cooperative. This is true to me because I give my undivided attention to hear what the people have to say. I trust a lot people, and I do not like to boast about myself. I also show sympathy for those in a lesser environment than me and to those who are going through trouble.
Conscientiousness- 99% - This means I set clear goals and pursue them with determination. People regard you as reliable and hard-working. This I already knew, since all my life I have been told by bosses that I am hard working and get the job done. I have also been told I am an asset to the company, that I am loyal, energetic, and a pleasure to have at the company.
Neuroticism– 1% - The results show I am exceptionally calm, composed and unflappable. I also do not react with intense emotions, even to situations that most people would describe as stressful. According to the IPIP-NEO personality assessment I am average when it comes to extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness but, rank low on the neuroticism and openness to experience categories. When I read the title ‘openness’ I assumed that it would mean friendly or something along the lines of that. After I read the description of what openness truly means I was a bit offended at first because I believed the score was telling me that I was not a smart person. As I read deeper into the meaning that the assessment gave I realized that “down to earth, practical, and conservative” (Johnson) were not insults but adjectives that I would have chosen for myself, minus the conservative part. Conservative is not a word that I would ever use for my way of thinking and that one section of openness to experience did not correlate with me. The Myers and Briggs personality test is unlike many of the personality tests you will find randomly online because it was designed to examine the ways in which you focus on the world and make everyday decisions. After taking this test myself I have found out a few things about myself that I did not really notice before. According to the Myers-Briggs test my personality type is INFP, which stands for Introversion, iNtuition, Feeling, and Perceiving. Extraversion is marked by pronounced engagement with the external world. Extraverts enjoy eing with people, are full of energy, and often experience positive emotions. They tend to be enthusiastic, action-oriented, individuals who are likely to say "Yes!" or "Let's go!" to opportunities for excitement. Neuroticism boldly contrasts with the other personality traits in the Five Factor Model for personality (Openness, Agreeableness, Extraversion, Contentiousness, and Neuroticism). An individual being high in any of the other four traits could hardly be considered pathological. For example, high levels of agreeableness, within reason, would probably be considered to be a positive and healthy characteristic. However, the discussion regarding neuroticism certainly takes a darker turn. Gunthert, Cohen, and Armeli (1999) in their study, operationally define neuroticism as a predisposition to experience negative affect (negative emotional systems). Lahey (2009) defines it slightly differently, as the tendency to “respond with negative emotions to threat, frustration, or loss.” More generally, the personality trait is characterized by anxiety, angry hostility, depression, self-consciousness, impulsiveness, and vulnerability (Cervone & Pervin, 2010). Neuroticism has critical implications outside of personality psychology. Some researchers suggest that neuroticism is significantly correlated with both physical and mental health issues more so than any other personality trait variable. This increased risk is not just for a particular group of pathologies; neuroticism has been linked to Axis I and II disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) across the board (Lahey, 2009). In some occupational performance studies, negative affect was negatively related to job performance (Kaplan, Bradley, Luchman, & Haynes, 2009). It has sixty questions using a Likert scale that measures five personality traits: OCEAN – openness (to experience,), conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. 2) On Conscientiousness, I rank very high – 86%. I also agree with this placement. I am well-organized and reliable. I feel that this part of my personality weighs down my openness to new experiences above. I’m very careful and calculated, taking care to get things right. 3) In Extraversion I ranked very low at just 7 percent. This is probably an accurate depiction, but if you asked most people who know me they wouldn’t rank me that low. I am a quiet, thoughtful person and I prefer small groups to large crowds. I am perfectly happy spending quiet time on my own. I actually work very hard at being more outgoing and forcing myself to talk to people in social situations where I would feel more comfortable melding into the background.
The test overall did a fairly accurate job in measuring the various factors of my personality. I only disagreed with two of the ten factors, which I merely saw as an overt measurement. The test appeared to be valid for the most part pertaining to my case, and since validity correlates with reliability, its reliability appears to be relatively strong. However this is merely an opinion based on my interpretation of my own personality. It could be equally likely that other people may get many scores in which they totally disagree on. Since this test was written 20 years ago the question of re-standardization also comes into play. As for cross-cultural differences discussed in the introduction, to me it is unclear whether or not the questions are common to all cultures and backgrounds, yet among English speakers the questions seemed well structured. While no test is perfect, the 16 PF does seem to have relatively high reliability and validity, making it ideal in measuring personality traits.
The fifth category is synergize which I scored a total of sixteen. I’m very creative for searching new ideas and solutions. I can sit on YouTube and look at different experiments and then try them on my own to see if my results will be the same. Also since I speak my mind a lot, I always encourage others to do the same. I feel like if everyone expresses their feelings they wouldn’t be any other motives within anyone. I’m also very open to seeing the insights and valuing my friends. I’ve had the same group of friends since I was about eleven years old and they teach me so much.
My personality type is Extroverted, intuitive, feeling, perceptive or ENFP. According to the description in the exercise, ENFP's are warm, enthusiastic and live their outer life more with intuition and their inner more with feeling. This assessment is consistent with the results that I received in part I of the exercise. I am an extroverted person who enjoys being around and working with people.
Most people, when looking at things like personality tests and horoscopes, and other conclusive assesments, tend to try and make sense of the response by relating what the personality test says to specific aspects about themselves. When I got my results back from the personality quiz, I was anything but surprised, if anything, the quiz just confirmed how indecisive I can be and how mixed my personality can be. In every single category, I had moderate results, never expressing too much of a lean in either direction.
