Assignment 2
Everyday I’m Hustling The process of looking for a job in my eyes is getting online and going directly to Craigslist.com or Monster.com. I thought that’s how everyone does it. The journey an actor or actress goes through is much more grueling then I could ever imagine, their hustle is ongoing and sometimes crushing when they don’t land parts. I normally apply for a job that I am already experienced in, a job that does not need much training, just direction. Actors and actresses are doing similar things however their learning curve is a bit different. They have a lot of options available to get them ready for any kind of opportunity that may be available. The actors and actresses have different options to get them ready for auditions. A site I researched provided help with classical theater however they go on to state, “Although the workshop is basically a study of classical theatre, actors are welcome to use this class for the development of contemporary audition monologues.” (Backstage) The performers are able to use this class to help with audition monologues. The class helps with more than one purpose. As far as there being a

The Actors Equity Union represents performers in making sure they’re being taken care of. “Equity negotiates wages and working conditions and provides a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans, for its members.” (Actorsequity.com) I’m not a performer but I would want someone taking care of my work conditions and to be on my side if things are not going as planned. A labor union is important and I do think performers should be a part of one. The Equity websites also advertises that they educate teachers as well so they can inform their students about their options when it comes to unions. The people acting and its business just like any other business out there; it’s not something that should be taken lightly when negotiating
Unions have an extensive history of standing up for workers. They have advocated rights of steelworkers, coal miners, clothing factory employees, teachers, health care workers, and many others. The labor movement is based on the idea that organized workers as a group have more power than individuals would have on their own. The key purpose of any union is to negotiate contracts, making sure workers are respected and fairly compensated for their work. “In theory” unions are democratic organizations, resulting in varying inner authority. Workers look for security within a job a...
Stevens are not positive in the least bit. You get a feeling in the beginning that it will be an uphill battle for the union organizer that shows up. The organizer says the Police Chief told him he was not welcome, and even some workers were not receptive to him. Norma Rae’s father told him that organizers come around every few years and it only causes problems when they do; people lose their jobs by participating. Norma Rae’s father also mentions there are no other choices for employment and they basically have to deal with the wages in fear of losing their jobs should they get involved in organizing efforts. Essentially, employees are afraid to be involved in anything union in fear of losing their only means of wages, no matter the conditions. In the movie, the first meeting the organizer puts together, 17 of 800 employees show up; that goes to show how the workers feel about getting
“Education is not the preparation for life; education is life itself.” - John Dewey. Every year, as we enter a new grade, new challenges approach us. Eighth grade is no exception., and will be very different from 7th grade. As I enter my eighth grade school year, I will be bombarded with a variety of new experiences and challenges such as buddies, academics, and being prepared for high school. One of the most important tasks that is thrust onto me is buddies.
External advocacy and political involvement is deeply engrained in the culture of labor unions. Bill Fletcher Jr. writes myth 8: “the union uses our money for political action and I have no say in the matter,” in his novel “They’re Bankrupting Us” And 20 Other Myths about Unions. In this myth, Bill Fletcher Jr. addresses unions and how they take political action. Labor unions often take political action in a controversial way, while not always getting full advantage of their work.
Do you think its fair that players are credited for what they do, when cheating the game? Mark McGwire excelled at the game of baseball and got credit for all of his accomplishments, yet he cheated the game and used steroids. Babe Ruth, considered one of the greatest baseball players to play the game of baseball, who never cheated and set a great example for all who play baseball. Baseball has drastically changed over the years, especially in the cheating scandals of steroids; Babe Ruth set a great example by excelling in the sport and doing it clean, contrasting with Mark McGwire. Their existence shows how society accepted honesty and doing it the clean way in Babe’s era and how society accepts the scandals and dishonesty of Mark’s era.
Labor unions were established as a way for workers’ needs and grievances to be heard by management. According to Fossum (2012), “forming a union creates a collective voice to influence change at work” (p. 7). The collective voice of workers in a union holds much more power than any single employee’s voice. It can loudly draw attention to mistreatment or abuse of workers. The organized collective voice of workers demands to be treated in a fair way by its management in terms of wages, hours, benefits, and working conditions.
The disadvantages of union membership are viewed from the employee and employer perspective. Through the employee lens, the disadvantages manifest in the form of fees, loss of autonomy, and less collaborative work environment. As part of the union, you surrender many of your individual rights in exchange for the organized results that can potentially manifest through the collective bargaining process. Therefore, there isn’t any assurance that your individual concern will even be addressed.
The Union protect the employee at all time. The union make sure that every employee is take care of. However, not every employer has the union and larger company usually carrier it. The union have the voice to negotiate wages, safety and job security. For example, the wages are much higher then the one who is none union. The work condition is a lot safer to work. OSHA stand for Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA mission is to prevent injuries that are work related, illness, and death. Since OSHA was created in 1971, occupational deaths in the US have declined by half and injuries by 40% (Occupational Safety & Health Administration, 2012). The union will help with Job security. Some employer can fire you with any cause. With the union in place it protects against being fired because of religion, race, or
Hollywood labor unions are considered necessary because labor unions deal with the employees so that that can receive higher wages, hours, and better working conditions. Union members make more money than non-union because they have someone fighting for them to be appreciated as an employee. Unions go to management and try to negotiate for the unions through bargaining. Sometimes labor unions and management cannot agree on terms and the members need to stand their ground and fight. Sometimes this is done with picketing, strikes, and boycotting. Sometimes after lengthy negotiations and tactical exercises, outside arbitration is called to assist in coming to a resolution agreement. (Ferrell, O.C., Hirt, J.A., & Ferrell, L., 2015, January
Overall, when the writers of the Writers Guild of America went on strike, it affected all members of the entertainment industry. Without the writers writing scripts, there was no reason to hire actors, and without actors, there was no reason to hire directors. Without actors or directors showing up to work, there was no need for drivers or craft services. Without actors receiving a paycheck, their agents weren’t either and they were forced to make changes. Due to the length and overall cost of the WGA strike, in June 2008 both the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) were quickly given similar contracts as the WGA in a process known as “pattern bargaining”, when one union in an industry got increases in pay and benefits, other unions wanting the same increases got
Hollywood is the home of movie making, and the movie industry is big business so it is not surprising that labor unions are considered necessary. Like all unions, the ones in Hollywood were formed to protect the rights of those employed in the industry. Unions in Hollywood first started in the early 1900s due to contract disputes. Back then “studios essentially “owned” their artist” (Ferrell, O. C., Hirt, G. A., & Ferrell, L., 2014) so the actors were unable to work for others in the business. Throughout the years the unions evolved to include work conditions, hours worked, and financial restitutions. Hollywood labor unions are not going anywhere any time soon. In the continuing years issues will arise that will require the actors to use unions
Opinions on teacher unions are extremely polarized, even within the unions themselves. Opinions seem to be strong and range from unions being the only hope for the teacher who wants to stand up against an oppressive administration to being a force that prevents the administration from actually ensuring teachers are effective. The unions look out for either the teacher first at the cost of the student, are defenders of equality for students, or are looking out solely for the union itself and doesn’t really have anyone else’s best interests in mind. In the following, the arguments and opinions of several writers will be summarized. Franchesca Warren says that the most frequent complaint she has encountered about teacher unions is one that pops
We can see that union protects and serves the musicians and gives them freedom to pursue their own careers in the performing arts. These organizations create stability for the pursuit of full-time jobs in many different areas of the arts, not only in music but also in the world of theatre and visual arts.
unemployment; competition for roles is often intense. While formal training is helpful, experience and talent are more important for success in this field. Because of erratic employment, earnings for actresses are relatively low.
Fictional literature can be categorized into many different genres: drama, romance, science fiction, tragedy, comedy, horror, and gothic. Gothic fiction borrows from horror by sampling mystery, dire setting, and chilling architecture. Romance is sampled in gothic fiction by the use of characters, firm emotions, and misguided love. Greenblatt writes, " Gothic became a label for the macabre, mysterious, supernatural, and terrifying, especially the pleasurably terrifying, in literature generally; the link that Romantic-period writers had forged between the Gothic and antiquated spaces was eventually loosened" (584). Horace Walpole wrote The Castle of Otranto in 1764. Walpole single-handedly sparked a new style of literature, gothic fiction. Walpole also coined the word seredipidy. The Castle of Otranto is referred as the the start of gothic fiction as a genre. What is gothic fiction exactly? How does gothic fiction use characters to enrich the work? What function does setting and architecture play in gothic fiction? How does gothic fiction create immense emotions within the reader? Finally, if Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto is the true beginning of gothic fiction, did the story influence all works after The Castle of Otranto was published?
