The movie Norma Rae is a 1979 drama film about a textile worker from Alabama that becomes involved in labor union activities in the factory where she works. Though it is a film, it is based on the true story of Crystal Lee Sutton, a textile worker from North Carolina, who worked for J.P. Employees had to endure poor pay and unsafe working conditions. As described by Raynor (2009), the company J.P. Stevens paid poverty wages and provided deplorable working conditions in the mills; workers lost fingers, had to inhale cotton dust, and some lost hearing because of the constant drone of the deafening machines. Norma Rae knew that she, her family, and her coworkers deserved more out of their employer for the work they were doing (Raynor, 2009). As Fossum (2012) points out, “employees are more likely to unionize as job dissatisfaction increases” (p. 9). This becomes the case in the movie; dissatisfaction continues to grow, and with some leadership, the union finally gets voted in. The miserable working conditions, and leadership, were clearly portrayed in the movie. One worker said at point he had a window at his station but it was sealed off to have that feeling of being closed in. The biggest concern/example seemed to happen when Norma Rae’s father was having problems feeling his arm but was told by the floor supervisor to continue working; he subsequently passed out and died. An important part to remember about union representation is that “dissatisfaction alone does not automatically mean a union organizining campaign will result or a representation election will be won” (Fossum, 2012, p. 10). Stevens are not positive in the least bit. You get a feeling in the beginning that it will be an uphill battle for the union organizer that shows up. The organizer says the Police Chief told him he was not welcome, and even some workers were not receptive to him. Norma Rae’s father told him that organizers come around every few years and it only causes problems when they do; people lose their jobs by participating. Norma Rae’s father also mentions there are no other choices for employment and they basically have to deal with the wages in fear of losing their jobs should they get involved in organizing efforts. Essentially, employees are afraid to be involved in anything union in fear of losing their only means of wages, no matter the conditions. ...er their conditions, as workers. Furthermore, unfortunately even with the formation of the union nothing is guaranteed. We see this in Matewan where the union was apparently unsuccessful in its mission. In Norma Rae we, as the viewers, can only hope that the established union would in the end prove to be successful.

Tensions between union supporters and management began mounting in the years preceding the strike. In April of 1994, the International Union led a three-week strike against major tracking companies in the freight hauling industry in attempts to stop management from creating $9 per hour part-time positions. This would only foreshadow battles to come between management and union. Later, in 1995, teamsters mounted an unprecedented national union campaign in attempts to defeat the labor-management “cooperation” scheme that UPS management tried to establish in order to weaken the union before contract talks (Witt, Wilson). This strike was distinguished from other strikes of recent years in that it was an offensive strike, not a defensive one. Before unions the laborer had their life, as many died in failed strikes, and their dignity, as society at least held an intrinsic value in their lives. However, unions succeeded in decimating any chance of advancement by tarnishing the reputations of all laborers, leading to a direct decline in the socio-economic position of the blue-collar worker.

The working class has served as an integral part of our capitalist society; as the building blocks, and producers of the goods that supply and support our country, the working class and working poor have faced many struggles to gain working rights. The histories of labor movements in the United States are often silenced from the mainstream culture; while we take our current union laws for granted, long forgotten are the bloody battles that took place to secure these rights. The ideological issues facing our modern day working class have shown to stem from the same socially constructed ideals that existed during past labor wars, such as the Colorado Coal Strike. The Coal Strike of 1913-1914 culminated in the Ludlow Massacre; this event showed how media coverage played off of cultural stereotypes of the working class and resulted in the raised consciousness among the strikers. The way the strike was presented to the public was shrouded in cultural symbology of poverty, and through these very symbols the strikers formed an identity of solidarity.

Norma Rae a loom operator in the weaving room is an outspoken individual and is very out spoken about her poor working conditions such as excessive noise, long hours with short breaks, physical stress from standing for long periods and abnormally high temperatures in the work areas. Added to all this is management¡¦s apathy for the working conditions, as seen when her mother looses her hearing temporarily with little or no sentiment from the company doctor, who knows this is a common problem for the workers. With this setting, the film progresses through most of the stages for employee organization. While management tries to get the workers support to keep the union out, and labor struggles to get a foothold to develop worker unity and get the union elected as the official bargaining agent both sides violate federal laws or come precariously close. Throughout American history, labor unions have served to facilitate mediation between workers and employers. Workers seek to negotiate with employers for more control over their labor and its fruits. “A labor union can best be defined as an organization that exists for the purpose of representing its members to their employers regarding wages and terms and conditions of employment” (Hunter). Labor unions’ principal objectives are to increase wages, shorten work days, achieve greater benefits, and improve working conditions. For this assignment, I decided to do my film review on To Kill a Mockingbird (Mulligan, R., & Pakula, A. (Directors). (1962). To Kill a Mockingbird[Motion picture on VHS]. United States of America.) I have a personal connection to this film because it is one of my most beloved novels by Harper Lee. I have never watched the film so it was a nice experience to see the characters I have loved for years come to life just before my eyes. The film particularly focuses on a white family living in the South of the United States in the 1930s. The two siblings, Jem and Scout Finch, undergo major changes while experiencing evil and injustice in their small town of Maycomb. Jem and Scout’s father is named Atticus and he is a well-respected man in the town as well as being a lawyer.
