Part One: Before the Taliban
• Chapter 4, page 38
◦ “I will protect your freedom, Malala. Carry on with you dreams.”
‣ This quote ends the chapter on a strong note. Malala’s Father described her as “free as a bird”, meaning she could do anything whenever she wanted.
‣ Malala knew she had limitations, as it wasn’t often women had a role in Islam society.
‣ Malala’s Father wanted her to feel different, and in this quote, is saying she is free to do whatever she wants because he will always have her back.

‣ However, if she did have an idea the Taliban were not her top supporters,
‣ why wouldn’t she try to spread her philosophy in a different place?
‣ She could have avoided the Taliban then altogether, although it wouldn’t have been as heroic or out in the public eye of the entire world.

◦ The last thing she remembers is not the men shooting her or her schoolwork for the next day, but instead the men on the side of the street cutting of the heads of the chicken.
◦ This can be somewhat related to how the Taliban are killing all the helpless people who don’t have the same ideals as the Taliban.
