In our time, we had many people who impacted our society. For example, Rosa Parks. She fought for the civil rights of black people. Two heroes who really impacted our society was Frederick Douglass and Malala Yousafzai. Even though from different time periods, both individuals were heroes to people. In Frederick’s time, he was a slave and used bravery & persistence to be able to become free. In Pakistan, most girls weren’t allowed to go to school or work. Malala wanted to change that. Malala Yousafzai was a 14 year old girl who wanted change for her country. In Pakistan, only about 40% of women could read and write. He learned to read and found out he wasn’t supposed to be living the life he’s living. Around 1835, Douglass wanted to become free. He asked his master to work and months later, he ran away. When he ran, he made a difference in the lives of slaves. Frederick encouraged slaves to read and write. Malala Yousafzai has made many claims for what she believes in. Those without a voice need to be heard. The taliban cannot quiet her. Nonviolence is one of the World’s greatest traditions. Education is one of the most important human rights. Yousafzai is able to support these claims with the way she speaks. All over the world, there are terrible things that have happened, but some people actually see them and have the courage to make the right change. Some of these people have even changed the way the world looks at things. Some great leaders and examples were Harriet Tubman, Melba Patillo Beals, and Malala Yousafzai. All of these characters had big motivations in their lives and felt the need to enact change. Frederick Douglass was one of the most important black leaders of the Antislavery movement. He was born in 1817 in Talbot County, MD. He was the son of Harriet Bailey and an unknown white man. His mother was a slave so therefore he was born a slave. He lived with his grandparents until the age of eight, so he never knew his mother well. When he turned eight, he was sent to "Aunt Kathy," a woman who took care of slave children on the plantation of Colonel Edward Lloyd. When he was nine, he was sent to Baltimore where he lived with Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Auld. He started to study reading with Mrs. Auld but Mr. Auld forbid it. However, he still managed to learn anyway. To cause him to comply with slavery more easily, Mr. Auld sent to him to Edward Covey, a man who specialized in breaking down the spirits of rebellious slaves, or a "slave breaker." While there, he was beaten daily for the slightest offense against the strict rules. One day he finally fought back in a fight that lasted two hours, and forced Covey to stop trying to "break" him. He was returned to Auld, where he was sent to a shipyard to learn the caulker's trade. But that didn't stop his education, he not only learned caulking but he also learned to write by tracing the letters on the ship front. Using seaman's papers given to him by a free black he escaped by sea. He tried to get work as a caulker but racial discrimination forced him to become a common laborer. To avoid being taken back, he changed his last name to Douglass. He soon became a large part of the antislavery movement when he came in association with The Liberator, which belonged to William Lloyd Garrison, and he also joined the black Garrisonians of New Bedford. The autobiography I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai begins with the scene of young pakistani education and women’s rights activist Malala being shot in the head. Her school bus had been stopped by the Taliban who, after asking which of the girls was Malala, put a bullet into her head. Malala ends the powerful prologue with the words “Who is Malala? I am Malala and this is my story” (9). Malala then rewinds to the story of her birth and how in Pakistan, no one congratulated her parents when she was born because she was a girl. Pakistani culture pushes for the birth of a boy as an islamic majority country. However, her father saw the potential in his daughter as a great leaser and named her after one of the great female leaders in Pakistan- Malalai of Maiwand who inspired the Afghan people, who were losing hope, to spur the army to victory against the British/Indian forces. Malala describes life in Mingora, Swat Valley, Pakistan. She outlines the Indian- Pakistan revolution and the shift of the Pashtun people into the Swat Valley. Malala’s father grew up in Shahpur but struggled to get his education in the town where he met Malala’s mother. They married and his dream of building a school, Khushal Public School, became reality when they moved into Mingora.
Frederick Douglass’ source, “The Desire for Freedom” was written in 1845. He was born into slavery in 1818 and became an important figure in the fight for abolition. Douglass was also involved in other reform movements such as the women’s rights movement. He “experienced slavery in all its variety, from work as a house servant and as a skilled craftsman in Baltimore shipyard to labor as a plantation field hand” (Pg.207¬). “The Desire for Freedom” was meant to document how his life was within slavery and how his education could someday help him escape it. Douglass meant to speak to American slaves and those who did not really understand slavery in order to help persuade everyone that life was meant to be lived freely. In order to obtain this future, Douglass wrote about his own personal experience and how he believed that enslavers were “in no other light than a band of successful robbers, who had left their homes, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes, and in a strange land reduced us to slavery” (Pg. 208). This source brings on the idea that slaves were willing to fight back, wanted to be educated, and, most importantly, wanted the chance to live life freely.
Often with strong desires and dreams, people become very serious and start to take on risky actions. This is the case in “Malala Yousafzai-Biographical” with Malala and Marjane in Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. The female protagonist Malala goes through a tough journey when standing up for what she believes in and the other female protagonist, Marjane, simply rebels against what she doesn’t agree with. Both Malala and Marjane stood up against injustice in their oppressive societies and in doing so Malala’s actions prove to be worthwhile whereas Marjane’s doesn’t. Both Marjane and Malala stood up against injustice by protesting and by following what they believed.

Malala Yousafzai in her speech, to the UN, implies that the boys and girls are not being given the chance to have an education and if they did the children are afraid of the opportunity and at the same time persuading young people to be able to join her cause. She supports her claim by first thanking all the people that supported her during incident that happened in 2012 where she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman and luckily made a huge recovery, then she mentions the education for boys and girls, and finally she talks about her ideas and pushes everyone to take action.
