Introduction
Desjardins’ Human-Computer-Human Interaction model (HCHI 2001, 2005) is an epistemological template for how a user, the technology that user is operating, and the processes of systems, are interdependent entities. In addition, certain competencies are needed for this relationship to function, along distinct dimensions (Desjardins, 2001, p.1). This HCHI model, as described by Desjardins, Lacasse and Bélair (2001), was an attempt to address specific competencies that were related to the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in an educational setting (pg. 1). Desjardins’ work with the HCHI has been further applied in the prototyping of collaborative online learning environments and as such the model may prove useful when analyzing current web-based applications for usability, reliability, and relevance. This is done by taking the application in question and observing which features fall in line with the four tenets of the HCHI: the technical order, the epistemological order, the informational order, and the social order. For this paper, I intend to apply the HCHI model to critically analyze the web-based mind-mapping tool, Popplet, using the perspectives and theoretical constructs discussed in EDUC 5101 Learning with Technology course. As a tool I frequently use, I am curious if Popplet holds up well to the HCHI paradigm and if Popplet, a collaborative online learning environment, displays interdependence between the user, the technology itself, and the processes of systems. Please note that Popplet does have a tablet version of its application. I will not be focusing on the iOS/Android versions, as it would add certain considerations to this paper that are beyond its present scope.

It is well known that in the past, Renaissance artists received their training in an atmosphere of artists and mathematicians studying and learning together (Emmer 2). People also suggest that the art of the future will depend on new technologies, computer graphics in particular (Emmer 1). There are many mathematical advantages to using computer graphics. They can help to visualize phenomena and to understand how to solve new problems (Emmer 2). “The use of ‘visual computers’ gives rise to new challenges for mathematicians. At the same time, computer graphics might in the future be the unifying language between art and science” (Emmer 3).
Oftentimes, students can be tempted to use technology for quick sources of facts instead of doing in depth research, but this can often lead to major mistakes and problems in their schoolwork. For example, in Scott Jaschik’s “A Stand Against Wikipedia,” Jaschik mentions how teachers at Middlebury College tried to form a stand against students excessively using unreliable online sources like Wikipedia in their papers because it often led to unprofessional and inaccurate information (246). Even Sandra Ordonez, a Wikipedia official, explained

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia with information created and maintained by volunteers around the world. Errors in the articles are inevitable due to the reliance on volunteers. This has lead to a stigma around the use of Wikipedia for academic purposes. Middlebury College’s history department went as far as to deny students from using Wikipedia as a source for exams and papers (Cohen, 2007). Even with the controversy surrounding Wikipedia’s credibility, it has been able to various roles in universities today.
Wikipedia has been the subject of considerable debate for some time now. Some think the site is not quotable, while others argue that it is. Many teachers do not accept Wikipedia pages as a source of information, because anybody can add information to such pages. However, this policy of everybody being able to add has changed, and the present-day Wikipedia team works hard to prevent inaccuracies on their website. Wikipedia pages nowadays indicate the sources of information. Moreover, Wikipedia pages are checked on inaccuracies. Furthermore, Wikipedia is more up-to-date than any encyclopaedia in book form. Additionally, Wikipedia covers more topics than a regular encyclopaedia. Wikipedia is therefore a useful source of information.
A subcomponent of written communication is visualizations. Visualizations as discussed earlier can be as simple as a picture or graph and most commonly used in aviation as maps and charts. It is very hard not to realize that technology has overpowered education in many ways. “Technology integration is similar to a tidal wave, growing silently in strength, then falling with an unstoppable roar upon those who paid no attention or showed little interest” (Guhlin, 40). Nowadays, computers are almost considered a necessity in the classroom, and are the main component of technology integration. Computers are being used in more numerous ways, besides only being used for basic word processing. With a simple computer, copious availabilities of technologies can be used in the classroom. “The one thing that is so great about the computer is that it does give a lot of instruction--and you don't need to have hearing to take advantage of it” (Anderson, 12). Computer Graphics is the bond between humans and computers. Computer graphics is a large field that branches into almost all fields of computer science; however its roots are young. Computer graphics has massively grown over the past 40 years and is now our primary means of communication with computer applications. Do to technological limitations in the 1950s, computer graphics began as a small, specialized field. The Whirlwind project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is marked as the origin of computer graphics (Machover 14).
Technological gadgets and applications were made for the purpose of facilitating the challenges we face in our lives and make it easier by saving time and efforts. This can be applied to almost every aspect in life including education.
Computer technology is one the most innovative advancements in modern-day education. Technology has made its way into the world of teaching practice and principle by expanding the way we approach instruction in the classroom. We are no longer confined to pencil and paper, but have the ability to project and present knowledge in an enhanced way to capture the minds of a generation of students whose society is built around ever expanding world of computer technology.
