With an increased demand for skilled labors, many students nowadays find themselves needing to complete some form of higher education at college to ensure their success in the workplace and for their future career goals. Although many people enter college with high ambitions and goals, many eventually drop out of college. Why does that happen? In an ever-changing, more competitive environment, the demanding expectations on/of college students now soar at unprecedented heights, creating stressful and unpleasant experiences for many of them, which often lead to serious health issues as they try to keep up with all the burdens inflicted upon them. For example, in Matt Richtel’s education article in the New York Times magazine titled “Technology Changing How Students Learn,” many of the teachers surveyed and interviewed, including Professor Hope Molina-Porter, noticed a great decline in the quality of students’ work and attention abilities. This, they believed, resulted from “students’ constant use of digital technology [which] is hampering their attention spans and ability to persevere in the face of challenging tasks” (1-2 Richtel). Certainly, technology allows students to access information and material rapidly without having to put too much effort in themselves, but it can result in poor quality work. In the end, college students need to practice caution when using the information available online by checking other more reliable sources for accuracy because the risk of receiving a low grade for using inaccurate information can really cause future problems in students’ educational career plan. In addition, technology can hamper a students’ educational experience when it causes problems by malfunctioning during use. To illustrate this with an example, recently I was taking a math test for College Algebra when the test almost auto-submitted before I had even completed the test. Then, when I actually tried to click the grade button to submit the test, the whole page crashed making the whole test disappear. Panicking at this point because this was a test that could not be retaken, I tried refreshing the page until something popped up, but that did not help. Eventually, something happened which allowed me to go back to the main page, and finally when I went through the grade tab, I discovered that the grade had luckily saved somehow. It is common for people who are not attending college to believe that college is easy, but in reality the average student faces a lot of challenges. I was never one of the protégées, who was born an outstanding athlete; I didn't even consider myself to be an athlete until my sophomore year of high school actually.
