To effectively convey the importance of SC to other Soldiers, a Sergeant Major would have to remain intimately familiar with the government’s message as it supports the overall mission and the commander’s intent. A key aspect the Sergeant Major’s role is fostering a consistent message within the unit. I feel credibility is the key SC principle as it relates to the duties of a Sergeant Major. Obviously, an inconsistent message to the media would call into question the viability of all messages. The same is also true for SC messages conveyed to junior Soldiers. When looking at the Special Operations (SO) Imperatives, one can gain an understanding of how to change their way of looking at problems that they are faced with in any scenario. By applying these imperatives, Special Forces Soldiers can set the conditions to succeed in any situation that they find themselves in. When reading The Ugly American by William J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick, there are several examples of the correct application and the lack of application of the imperatives throughout the book. Taking a look at the Office of Strategic Service (OSS) linking up with John Colvin during the war, Father Finian and how he operated with and through others, and how Louis Krupitzyn and his wife understood their operational environment and Colonel Hillendale also mastered this skill and was the right man for the job. I will explain how the SO imperatives were applied correctly. Joe Bing and his inability to recognize the political implications while in Setkya and Tom Knox’s return trip from Cambodia serve as great examples of how the imperatives need to be applied correctly.

Commanders must be able to describe their operation visualization to staffs and subordinates. It fosters a working relationship and a shared understanding of the situation, mission and intent. Without description of mission command from the commander, a unit may not be able to accomplish their task or mission.

Integrity is a core value, a key aspect, of the Army Values. Integrity of the soldier is looked upon highly, and is a valuable asset in any field of the army. Twenty four seven, meaning every hour of every day, a soldier should strive for integrity. Having integrity means your are trustworthy, and being trustworthy means that your NCO can depend on you to do the right thing at all times.
You must be able to reach them in a timely manner, in case the plan of the day has changed. The Marine Corps cannot function without its most important tool, the MARINES. One of the smallest and most important aspects of being Marines, being where you are supposed to be and doing what you are supposed to be doing. If your leadership is unaware that you are doing these things then they are to assume you are not completing the task assigned or never made it to the required event. As Marines we are designed to be a force in readiness, able to deploy and execute missions within a limited time frame. Getting an entire unit up and ready to deploy requires a lot of moving parts which make communication and accountability on all levels important. The commander’s intent is a critical part of mission command. The commander, through the commander’s intent, must blend the art of command and the science of control that integrates all joint warfighting functions. ADM Wesley McDonald, Commander US Atlantic Command (LANTCOM), failed to convey the commander’s intent to the joint force for Operation Urgent Fury. This failure promoted misunderstanding and mutual trust issues among the joint force that affected the integration of joint functions such as intelligence and sustainment.
We can identify three major cultural dimensions that help us to understand what leaders must focus on as they guide the transition of the Army. First, professional Identity, which is guided by Soldiers at all levels who are striving for excellence in their functional specialty, i.e., HR Sergeants. Soldiers who have goals and ideals of the Army to ethically put service and duty first. HR Sergeants are trained and well educated in their field. They are taught to put Soldiers first and have great customer support skills. Second, community, the sense in which Soldiers stop thinking about “I” and start thinking “we”. The bond among units who not only believe in cohesion with Soldiers, but their families too. The HR Sergeants are there to take care of Soldiers when financial issues arise with them or their families and don’t back down until the situation is solved. Last, hierarchy, which leads to order and control and provides Soldiers with moral reference and a sense of direction. Regardless of the career you choose in your life, whether it be an accountant or a Soldier in the United States Army, someone, somewhere most likely had an influence to bring you to that decision. The Army defines leadership as the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization (JP, p. 1). Now imagine you are a young Private, in one of the most dangerous places in Iraq and you have constant leadership changes, and not much support from your direct leadership. I am sure at this point you can imagine, it is not the best scenario to be in. Throughout the duration of this essay you will read about Sergeant First Class Rob Gallagher and Sergeant First Class Jeff Fenlason, their leadership abilities, and the techniques they attempted to use to resolve the issues in this Platoon that was in a downward spiral after losing many leaders to the hell of war.
First, Lt. Col Moore assesses his men through observation of their initial skills and makes a determination of what needs to be improved. As he does this he enlists the help of his top advisor Sergeant Major (SGM). They conduct the observation not as mere spectators but with the Soldiers doing the evaluation themselves. This participation shows each Soldier that every man has an equal part in the team and no one is above the team’s goals not even the Commander. To drive this point even further LTC Moore and the SGM continue to train on the ground with the men. As setbacks, corrections or different approaches are needed it is easily explained and seen by the Commander because he is on the ground with the men and not somewhere taking a meeting or in his office doing paperwork. This approach also builds a sharing point with his men and other leaders inside his unit and trust is earned.
The most effective commanders through their leadership build cohesive teams. Mutual trust, shared understanding, and accepting prudent risk serve as just a few principles for mission command. Mutual trust is the foundation of any successful professional relationship that a commander shares with his staff and subordinates. The shared understanding of an operational environment functions, as the basis for the commander to effectively accomplish the mission. While my advice for the commander on what prudent risks to take may create more opportunities rather than accepting defeat. Incorporating the principles of mission command by building cohesive teams through mutual trust, fostering an environment of shared understanding, and accepting prudent risk will make me an effective adviser to the commander, aid the staff during the operations process, and provide an example for Soldiers to emulate.
Communication is critical to any organization and is necessary in every aspect especially in a military. Communication plays a role in Soldier development, peer to peer relations, Chain of command management, and virtually every aspect of a military operations. Commanders require it the most so that they can execute large scale operations without flaw and that alone requires ceaseless effective communication. If soldiers are informed and engaged, communications with other units are likely to be robust as well.
