HsÜn Tzu’s essay explains the differences between a man who respects the privilege to learn, and a man who abuses his privilege. Learning is an important aspect in today’s society. Obtaining a higher education can allow someone to receive a job over someone who received the minimum about of education required. Many people today choose to go to college to obtain more knowledge related to their field of study. Some people have great jobs without going on to college. Those who have abused the knowledge they received in elementary school, middle school, and high school are considered careless in Tzu’s perspective, as well as mine. Tzu states, “Therefore we may speak of an end to the program of learning, but the objective of learning must never for an instant be given up (Tzu, 549). Of course we stop going to lectures and listening to our professors as they provide us with more information, but the world around us still continues to teach us in different ways. New issues arise in the world, as citizens we need to be up to date with what is going on around us. We cannot avoid the fact that these horrific things are happening around us. We need to know what to do to help others and we need to be able to educate others about the world issues. At the work place, new technology or techniques can be introduced. You will have to learn how to use the equipment and how to follow through with the proper technique. Having more knowledge makes you wiser. It is explained by Tzu that, “To pursue is to be a man, to give up is to become a beast” (Tzu, 549). Tzu describes a person who continues their learning as a gentleman. A gentleman is someone who does the right thing, who is caring, and who knows what is best. We should all strive to be this gentleman that Tzu talks about because it will make us all better people.
