How to Survive Portuguese Taxi Ride
Less than twenty-four hours after arriving in Portugal, I was introduced to my first taxi ride. I was traveling with a native Portuguese girl, Sandra Batista. Sandra called a taxi to take us to our home.
I hadn't, yet, experienced a taxi ride in Portugal. I had heard how dreadful these rides can be, especially the first time.
"Consider yourself forewarned," a friend had cautioned a few minutes before I boarded the plane. He was, of course, referring to the taxi drivers in Portugal. I laughed.
"The taxi drivers can't be that bad," I reasoned with him. He laughed. He had the last laugh. In fact, he still laughs about my ignorance.
The taxi pulled up and Sandra and I got in. She took the passenger's seat; I sat in the rear. I felt calm. After the first acceleration, that serenity transformed to sheer panic and nausea. I was praying silently as I held on for dear life.
Sandra was nonchalant; she animatedly spoke in Portuguese to the driver. The spoken language was foreign to me; her body language was not. She was completely unaffected.
Fifteen minutes later we arrived home. "For cars and motorcycles the speed limits are 60 kilometers per hour (37 m.p.h.) in built up areas (city streets)." (Baedeker 388) Our driver was averaging about 90 kilometers per hour (55 m.p.h.). Sandra thanked and tipped our driver. I lost my lunch in the nearest bush.
It was my first "near-death experience," as I like to call it; little did I know, I would endure several more experiences similar to this one in the following year and a half, while residing in Portugal. After several months of fearing, my life, followed by vomiting, I decided to create a method for relaxation in the Portuguese taxi.
First, give yourself time to prepare for the event. You will need a good amount of time to think about and prepare for your excursion. Meditation is powerful. In Lamaze classes, for example, you are told to have a calm and peaceful setting to think about when labor pains get climactic and intense; the Portuguese taxi ride qualifies as "intense." Prepare your mind by thinking of a peaceful scene; this scene could be a beach or a forest setting. Pondering a roller coaster ride would not be a good idea. Thinking through an entire calm setting can put your mind into "relax" mode.
taxi, and when they stop for her to eat food, she gets "stranded" by the taxi driver. She sees two
While playing many roles in the story the physical journey provides a moral education for Huck. Essentially, it shows Huck from the beginning of the novel, who hunted A-rabs and played a distasteful practical joke on Jim, the consequences of immorality by showing the damaging repercussions of immoral behavior. One of the greatest examples of the negative effects of immoral behavior on others is demonstrated by the actions of the King and the Duke. Their schemes caused irreparable damage to individuals and the towns they visited. When the King and the Duke pose as missionaries and collect donations from church-goers Huck sees the damage inflicted upon the townspeople because of this scheme. He, for the first time, empathizes with a group of people and realizes that ...
Sex Education is essentially the teachings of human sexuality in regards to sexual anatomy, reproduction, intercourse and behaviors associated. Learning about these aspects is important to adolescent development as it is a natural part of life. One way children learn about this is through school or somewhere in their community such as an after school program. Though it seems like an obvious lesson to learn, children have a difficult time getting this information from any source other than an organized curriculum in their health class at school. This is somewhat understandable as it can be very uncomfortable for parents and guardians to discuss these intimate details with their innocent child but it has the potential to cause problems later in the adolescent’s life. Brewin’s article addresses the parental concern that sex education may actually stir sexual desires and behaviors in the children that were not present before (Brewin.) However, curiosity comes about naturally and if it is met with over-protectiveness and suspicion from parents then the child has no other choice but to get the facts from another source which could possibly be firsthand experience.
Sex education or Sexuality Education is described by Kunwar and Yudav (2011) as an education that tackles about the different aspects of sexuality such as human sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, human sexual behavior and, etc. It seeks to decrease the possible negative effects on human sexual behavior such as teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases; it also seeks to amend the quality of relationships. This shows that the broader concept of human sexuality will be taught in sex education, aiming to give awareness and deeper understanding of these concepts. This term is also given a definition by Fontanilla (2003) as an instructional tool in helping and forming wholesome demeanors, values, and practices in
The existence of a physical journey is often a result of a character’s internal desires, such as a thirst for adventure or the hope to escape from an unfavorable situation. The novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain exhibits both examples as the journey across the Mississippi River involving Huck Finn, a young white boy, and Jim Turner, an older black slave is narrated. They set off on the river as drastically different human beings with relatively similar reasoning behind their imminent adventure. Huck wishes to flee from the abuse he endured from his alcoholic father as well as societal restraints, while Jim covets freedom from the binds of slavery. During the length of the journey, more is accomplished than simply the freedom
“Indiana SB 454 requires accredited schools that provide instruction on human sexuality or sexually transmitted diseases to provide comprehensive sexual health education that is age appropriate, medically accurate and culturally sensitive. Requires schools to notify parents and allow parents to review the curriculum. Also allows parents to opt out,” 2013 Sex Education Legislation (NCSL, 2013). As sex education has been around for many years, it is changing year to year because of what is being taught in the curriculums. Teenage sex education is an important topic of debate in schools because sex and its health related issues are widespread in the lives of so many adolescents. Some engage in sex without knowing the risks that come along with because students are exposed to sexual encounters shown in movies, TV shows, and the internet. This paper will examine the purpose, history, advantages and disadvantages of sex education, as well as how education systems can improve the sex education curriculum.
A novel structured on the theme of morality, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain focuses on Huck Finn’s multifaceted growing up process. Huck, through his escapades and misfortunes is obliged to endure the agonizing process from childhood to adulthood where he attains self-knowledge and discovers his own identity. Throughout the journey down the Mississippi River, Jim, Ms. Watson’s runaway slave, accompanies Huck, and is later joined by two con men. It is during this journey that a great moral crisis in Huck’s life occurs where he must make a painful decision as to whether he is going to give Jim up to the slave hunters or notify Ms. Watson about Jim’s whereabouts and assist him to remain a free man. This is the turning point in his character where through deep introspection, he learned to think and reason morally for himself. He comes to his own conclusions, unaffected by the accepted, and often hypocritical, perceptions of Southern culture. Huck also deciphers the truth in the face of lies held by the antagonistic society with its evil nature.
Comprehensive sex education should be taught in public schools. The youth of today cannot make educated decisions regarding sex if they are not properly educated. Not educating America’s youth in all aspects of sex education is comparable to allowing them to drive without being taught. This choice of not allowing comprehensive sex education is schools is dangerous and can have life long consequences. These consequences will not only affect the individual but can ultimately affect America. It is vital for Americans to begin giving their youth the education that is needed.

Somehow while scrambling out of the taxi, the umbrella rod was jammed up my nose. I exclaimed to my coworker: “I’m in pain!” as the driver pulled away leaving my son and I ...
Before making a decision to take a ride, don’t fail to examine the advisory board that points out why should you avoid the related ride (expectant mothers, people having problems with backs or necks, suffering from dizziness…). If you don’t fall into any related category, only the queue between you and your seat and (possibly) the level of adrenaline stand between you and the premium entertainment you will never forget, and probably not even
Sexual Health Education has been a debated topic since its beginning. Many parents feel that exposing young people to things such as anatomy, condoms, reproduction etc. only encourages sexual activity. Gaining sexual knowledge ca...
Whereas, the Sexual Education program promotes safe sex and knowledge of the sex and it’s consequences. The motto would be, “Knowledge is Power.” As a result of this program has decreased the rate of unplanned pregnancy and sexual disease outbreak. This is why it is argued that Sexual Education should be taught in the public school system.
The local public financial management is a branch of economics that involves the collection of sufficient resources from the local and public sections in a particular economies or country (Shah, 2007). The internal control of these resources is their effective and efficient management through their allocation to ensure acceptable incomes by the people and stability of the local and public economies in a given city like Verdemont (Matthew, 2008). The local government of such city should ensure its internal control is effectively enhanced to ensure the cities activities have effective administration and design approaches especially on finance projects in the city (Shah, 2007). This involves the how incomes are generated, the allocation of the various resources collected and their appropriate expenditure of the resources on the city to ensure achievement of already set financial goals.
As children grow, they accumulate knowledge over the years about a variety of subjects to prepare them for the future. Children learn from parents, schools, life experiences, what they watch and other influences around them, and it can be either positive learning or negative learning. There is one subject that is difficult to teach and have control over because of misunderstandings, lack of teaching, and publicity. Sex education has been a major debate for children under eighteen, because there are some parents that want it taught in schools and others that do not because of different reasons. There are currently eighteen states and the District of Columbia that require schools to provide sex education and thirty-two that do not require sex education. “There is no federal law that requires public schools to teach sex education or what should be taught” (Glander). While the parents and schools are debating whether sex education should be taught, children are out participating in sexual activities without any knowledge of protection and consequences, such as pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STD)s. “Sixty-six percent of American high school students have had sexual intercourse by their senior year” (Masland). Sex education should be taught in schools, because some parents do not talk to their children about sex, schools can possibly teach it better and make it easier to understand, and there are too many things in the society that is sexual based and confuse the children if not taught to them early.
