How to Give a Lecture
Lecturing is not simply a matter of standing in front of a class and reciting what you know The classroom lecture is a special form of communication in which voice, gesture, movement, facial expression, and eye contact can either complement or detract from the content. No matter what your topic, your delivery and manner of speaking immeasurably influence your students' attentiveness and learning. Use the following suggestions, based on teaching practices of faculty and on research studies in speech communication, to help you capture and hold students' interest and increase their retention.
General Strategies
Watch yourself on videotape. Often we must actually see our good behaviors in order to exploit them and see our undesirable behaviors in order to correct them. If you want to improve your public speaking skills, viewing a videotape of yourself can be an invaluable way to do so. See "Watching Yourself on Videotape."
Learn how not to read your lectures. At its best, lecturing resembles a natural, spontaneous conversation between instructor and student, with each student feeling as though the instructor is speaking to an audience of one. If you read your lectures, however, there will be no dialogue and the lecture will seem formal, stilted, and distant. Even if you are a dynamic reader, when you stick to a script you forfeit the expressiveness, animation, and give-and-take spontaneity of plain talking. Reading from notes also reduces your opportunities to engage your class in conversation and prevents you from maintaining eye contact. Prepare yourself emotionally for class. Some faculty play rousing music before lecturing. Others set aside fifteen or thirty minutes of solitude to review their notes. Still others walk through an empty classroom gathering their thoughts. Try to identify for yourself an activity that gives you the energy and focus you need to speak enthusiastically and confidently. • The next day replay the recording of the lecture and make a set of notes on it.
• Review your notes to identify the differences between the two recorded segments. Consider style, use of language, pacing, volume, fluency, expressiveness, and soon.
Any differences you note will help you decide how to improve
Use a video recorder. When reviewing a videotape of yourself lecturing, you can watch the entire tape, watch the tape with the sound turned off, or listen to the tape without watching it. Adopt the procedures outlined above for reviewing and analyzing your videotape. Most of the time you will be pleasantly surprised: you may have felt nervous during the lecture, but the videotape will show you that your nervousness was not apparent to your class. Work with a speech consultant. Speech consultants can help you develop effective delivery skills. Ask your campus faculty development office for names of consultants or a schedule of workshops on lecturing.

Many people flocked to California in search of the golden treasure and to follow their dream. This was the start of the California Gold Rush. The California Gold Rush was an important part of the history of the United States; it helped to settle the western United States, increased the economy of California, and negatively impacted the Native Americans living in the west.
It was the determination of so many to get to California just to have an opportunity of obtaining a better life. The dream to acquire wealth in a matter of months became a reality for some, and a dream for others. The Gold Rush had a major impact on California economically, demographically, and socially, ultimately affecting the whole world. Thousands of immigrants came to America because of gold, boosting the country’s economy. The Gold Rush did wonders to the US economy, people went out and spent more money once the “struck it rich” making merchants richer who would buy from others to be able to supply the need. Even though only a small amount of people got rich from the gold the wealth spread a crossed the country and helped the US economy be what it is today. It smoothed the way for California to be the most thriving and diverse state in the union. California has the highest population in the United States. The California gold rush began on January 24, 1848, in the Sacramento Valley. The first sight of gold nuggets found during the Gold Rush was located in the American River, by James W. Marshall. After the news of the gold became known the tidings spread quickly. Information about Jame's discovery caused thousands of immigrants to migrate, changing the nation forever. Citizens living in California were especially provoked with this, due to their homes being intruded on. Before the gold was first found in 1848 the estimated population was less than 1,000 people. Within one year the nations' population had jumped tremendously to approximately 100,000 people. California officially became recognized as a state in 1850, and after two more years had passed almost 250,000 immigrants, businessmen, families, and miners, had traveled to California in hopes of discovering gold. By 1850 more than 300,000 gold questers assailed California.
Mining was a huge advantage in the economic growth due to the entire silver overload. Mining for silver and gold brought prospectors and white settlers into many various areas including Nevada, California, Colorado and many more. Because the standard currency throughout the economy is gold, it was essential to keep the country open to market with European nations. The California Gold Rush was an event that became prominent in 1849. The event consisted of the discovery of gold in the United States territory of California. That year, over 89,000 people from many countries moved to the territory to try to find gold for themselves. This resulted in the territory eventually having enough people to become a state. The event also brought 81 million dollars in gold production to California.
The California Gold Rush is traced back all the way to the Mexican War, which was fought from 1846 to 1848. The cause to the war was a dispute over Texas, between Mexico and America. However, by the end of this America didn’t only end up with Texas, but also Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and California. During the middle of the 19th century, America was expanding and its transportation was improving too. Once gold was discovered in California huge waves of gold hungry people came from all over the world to California, impacting California’s economy, social life, and especially its population. In an Individualism point of view we can say that Integrated Rural Development Centre is ethical because they are trying their best to get funds in their supporters in order to fund their projects. However, In a Utilitarianism point of view we can argue that this non profit organisation is unethical because the funds of the organization are not being use properly instead they are being use for the personal expense of the founder. The same with the Kantianism theory, this non profit organization is not consistent and irrational as the funds are not properly used. It does not promote goodwill as well because there were proof that corruption is exists in the organization.
Lecturing is not always seen as a bad thing. It is a straightforward way to teach students quickly (Kelly). Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. 3. Class Discussions. These are often more helpful than the lecture them self. When the class is discussing the subject ask questions and get clear answers because often the teacher is talking so fast that you will miss a point or two in the class discussions will be the time to clarify anything in the lecture that you didn’t understand in the lecture.
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
