The Process of How Movies are Made:
Then and Now
For over a hundred years, people have watched movies, but not many know of the process that goes into making all of the movies we enjoy. Since the time of the silent films, the process has drastically changed, thanks to more advanced technology. For example, the first films didn’t have sound, were in black and white, and were shorter than they are today. Today, films have sound, are in color, and are much longer.
The first piece of technology that produced a sort of “moving picture” was Thomas Edison- and his assistant William Kennedy Laurie Dickson-‘s- Kinetoscope. One of the first prototypes for the Kinetoscope was shown to a convention of the National Federation of Women's Clubs on May 20, 1891. The machine was both a camera and a peep-hole viewer, and the film used was 18mm wide. (History of Edison Motion Pictures: Origins of Motion Pictures--the Kinetoscope) After their invention many more came until it eventually lead to the invention of the Vitascope.
The, Vitascope was invented by Charles Francis Jenkins, Thomas Armat, and with later help from Thomas Edison. Charles Francis Jenkins had already invented a version of Edison’s Kinetoscope, called the Phantoscope. Which they “built off of” to make their next film showing machine, which in September 1895, they showed to the public. The reaction to it must have been good, because shortly after that they broke off the partnership each claiming it was their own idea. After this Jenkins produced another film machine and showed it the public a week after the partnership was off. During this time Armat, was perfecting his version of their product. Upon perfecting his version,...

...gs, blueprints, sculptures and models later, the people in development have designed an imaginary place and characters to voice the story. (Production Process)
Once all of that is done, they need to find actors and actresses to voice the characters. They usually cast them by giving them a script to read and videotaping them to see how they sound. In this kind of movie it doesn’t matter how good looking the actors is, it’s all about how well they can act; with only their voice. Once they decide who will play each character, they can develop the character on the computer, to sort of match the actor’s personality. (Production Process)
After the casting process they really start to animate the film itself, they use the computer to make a layout of the characters, by using production designs picked from the hundreds of drawings, they made before. (Production Process)
There first invention produced was the Technicolor System 1 Additive Color, which I’m sorry to say flopped massively due to the unfortunate screening of The Gulf Between in 1917 which only a few frames remain of this film today. This was the first public premier of the technology and was disastrous. The film was captured through two separate filters red and green and the light through those two filters was captured on a single reel of film, when processed this negative had red and green information captured on a black and white reel, when this was processed the reel was placed into a projector and then threw red and green filters. To project the image an adjustable prism that had to manually lined up by the projectionist as two separate images formed on the projection screen this did not work as planned as the projectionist failed to line up the images correctly.
Not only that, they change costumes and props in every picture to convey the character they are becoming. In a sense, they are actresses, and each picture is a separate role for them. How well do they fit the roles? That is a matter of opinion. I found each role they wished to convey was portrayed quite well.
The decade was largely dominated by silent films, but the creation of movies with sound followed afterwards. These innovations greatly improved the movies and made them more immersive and exciting for the viewer. Soon after the invention of sound in movies, the silent era movies...
Making character animation without any CGI enhancements is an expensive offer, but Chuck insisted on doing it correctly and using the best animators, Maurice Noble, Auril and Richard Thompson, Hall Ashmead and Phil Roman.
The cylinder phonograph proved to be successful, but the problem with the machine was that the tin foil only allowed a few uses. With the help of another great inventor, new advances could be made to improve this invention. The inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, had set up a laboratory for his cousin, Chichester Bell and Charles Tainter. Bell a...
My grandfather has always talked about how much movies have changed in such a short amount of time. His favorite movie, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, is an example of how editing and special effects have changed drastically since only 1982 and even from the early 1900s. Watching a movie from this year compared to a movie from the 1930s, the viewer would notice many differences ranging from effects, transitions and especially quality. When film started in the late 1800s, there was no digital technology to edit films. There have been many contributors in the film industry that have helped evolve film to its digital age of today. Edwin Porter was the first person in film history to create a narrative film. Lev Kuleshov created a technique gives films certain moods to it and can affect a person’s emotions just by the way images are juxtaposed and edited together. Danny Boyle is an example of a modern day director that developed a set of guidelines that a director should reciprocate while filming. Film editing has revolutionized and developed so much since the early 1900s to now because of important contributors throughout its history that developed new technology and techniques.
A crew includes a screenwriter, whose job it is to provide the written blueprint version of the entire film. This is basically the starting point for any movie. Next there is the producer. There are many types of producers; executive producers, co-producers, assistant producers and line producers. They all do very different things. Some are the producers are responsible for raising the funds for the movie while others are responsible for the production that goes on during the filming of the movie and still other producers are in charge of what physically goes on the set. Then it is time for the director. The director is in charge of the actors. The director works with the actors to visually bring to life what was written on the screenplay (Fortunato, Who Does What on a Film). Now the idea needs to come together. The idea of writing, “what you know” is not always true and writing, “what you come to know” is in fact a more accurate way to write. Other good ways to formulate ideas are to use existing plays, novels, short stories, life stories, new articles, or even past TV shows and film. When using existing work a person needs to make sure that one secures the copyrights before starting write. Securing the copyrights does not mean one is finished yet. Now a person needs...
Eadweard Muybridge was a director who made the first movie in 1878, The Horse in Motion. He used multiple cameras and put the individual pictures into a movie. Muybridge’s movie was just pictures of a galloping horse. Muybridge also invented the Zoopraxiscope, the first ever movie projector that made short films and movies. It was able to quickly project images, creating what is known as motion photography and the first movie to ever exist. To use the Zoopraxiscope a disc is put on the device and is turned. As the disc turns, the images are projected onto the screen and the movie starts ...
The Animators used motion capture to get most of their animations captured before they tweaked the final animations. They used real martial artists fighting in suits of armor
techniques such as Camera angles, Lighting and sound. This movie users all of this elements
The process starts off by creating a timeline for the animation of what I want in it and well these ideas will flow. I will have to consider what is important to the story and what I think will work best with my intended audience. Once I am happy with my storyboard I will create my characters out of plasticine. This process will take time to do as I must get the characters to look as close to pictures as possible. Once my figures are complete I will need to create certain backdrops for different scenes. Once I have the foundations to begin my project I will first experiment with the figures working on set movements that will appear often in the animation. Once I understand how to use these movements in my animation. After I am comfortable will my skills in the animation I will create it and create versions of it until I am completely satisfied with my finished project. Once I have the animation I will add voicing to the animation and background music to finish
Just like most art forms it takes practice to become really good at animating. Computers have helped to make animation a quicker and simpler process then it once was. Now computers have been used in almost every animated film that has come out in the last ten years. Because of this animation quality has improve dramatically to the point that animated characters are serving as major characters in many of the top movies today. This includes characters such as Ja-Ja Banks in Starwars, The many dinosaurs of the Jurassic Park movies, and Gollum in the Lord of the Ring movies.
The very first photograph was made in 1877 and it was mainly made of wood and used tin foil to create the sound. The way that the first phonograph worked was when you cranked the handle and spoke it would create bumps and cresses in the tin foil. When you played back the telegraph will read the bumps and cresses in the foil and it will come out as sound. This fancy item comes with a price, in 1891 the phonograph costed $150. Within a year Tomas Edison will put this invention and put it in dolls so the dolls can talk. With that invention was the telegraph.
Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
