In 1867 William Lincoln patented a contraption that would revolutionize the entertainment industry. Lincoln’s first film capturing camera was called the “zoopraxiscope” or the “Wheel of Life.” Later on, in the 1890’s people began creating their own versions of portable cameras, whereas Lincoln’s camera was always mounted to a tripod, to prevent moving pieces from breaking. There is no way they could have known what an impact they would have had on the world. Film throughout the ages has created many incredible people, styles, and technology. Through film, there was less pressure for actors. Film directors began inventing new directing styles and abilities, taking film to their own, personal level. As for technology, the constant competition to have the greatest visual attractiveness led to the development of far greater equipment. Hundreds of sizes of film were created in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, leading to the ever so convenient Digital Video we can shoot in today. Each era of film from the Silent Film to the French New Wave was influenced by prior film generations and influenced those films that came after it. The era of Silent Film was very basic as it emerged when motion pictures had only begun. In the textbook ‘American Film: A History’, Jon Lewis discusses the components which he believes are markers of “the end of cinema as we know it”. By Cinema, Jon Lewis is meaning the all-encompassing thing that is film-making and film-viewing, as well as the marketing, and business side of Hollywood itself. The changes that resulted from the conglomerate business model, the marketing system of the industry and the advance in technology are the major argument points discussed by Lewis, however I think that technology itself is truly the overarching cause of the changes that’ve been seen.

“The biggest mistake we have made is to consider that films are primarily a form of entertainment. The film is the greatest medium since the invention of movable type for exchanging ideas and information, and it is no more at its best in light entertainment than literature is at its best in the light novel.” - Orson Welles
Hollywood is known to be the home of the movie industry, but why is that so? Because of the increase of movie popularity, industries wanted to create better conditioned and more comfortable theater places for attraction purposes. Year-round outdoor filming was originally based in New York and Chicago, but their weather conditions only allowed use for a portion of the year. So, many companies attempted to look for different locations with better/warmer conditions such as Texas, Florida, etc. but the most successful places they found was Hollywood. Not only did it provide year-round warm weather, but it also had close, easy access to natural, unique landscapes to shoot around. This was the beginning of the iconic Hollywood movie industry. Some of the earliest and influential film companies were warner bros., paramount, 20th century fox, and more. All owning their own film studios and sets. “By 1915, more than 60 percent of U.S. film production was centered in Hollywood” (The History Of

The film industry has always been somewhat of a dichotomy. Grounded firmly in both the worlds of art and business the balance of artistic expression and commercialization has been an issue throughout the history of filmmaking. The distinction of these two differing goals and the fact that neither has truly won out over the other in the span of the industry's existence, demonstrates a lot of information about the nature of capitalism.
With movies, you are able to travel back in time and explore unknown eras. If you rather race ahead of your century, they can also hurl you into the future. You can easily become indulged in a mystery, fall in love in a romance, test your fright in a horror, or make the scientific impossible possible in a science fiction. Movies are movies. They provide entertainment by immersing people into an imaginary world. However, these movies or films need to have certain qualities in order to provide this form of entertainment and to be notable. Hence, these qualities would have to contribute in making a great film. This would point to the question of what is it that really makes a great film.

Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
