In our modern society, libraries have really changed. In the beginning, they started out being a place of books and silent learning. As time progresses, it is becoming a place of electronics and more a place of socialization. Although the library was made for learning and books, it is turning out to be a place of quiet socialization, and technology usage. Libraries originally started as a place where knowledge was shared with the world, findings from the past and stories of the future were put together in one place. They have been around for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egypt with hieroglyphic pads. Their goal was to store their glyphs where they could be put in order and where they could always find them. Their main …show more content…
The library in modern time has become mainly computer based, with many library ditching most books to make room for Computers. With this generation becoming more and more tech savvy, it is having a major impact on our environment and culture. It seems that their original goal of keeping hard knowledge is starting to fade away, and now everything is on a computer. There are billions of books on the internet and there is starting to be an absence of physical books. Now there is the invention of Google, a search engine that you can find a limitless amount of information on. This is where all new information is being stored. People are not bringing this information to the library to be logged. All they have to do is put it on Google and it is there forever and there is no chance that it will be destroyed in a …show more content…
People don’t really go there strictly for learning anymore since the invention of the electronic library. “‘In many campus libraries there are coffee shops, music blasting and loud laughter. If a student really wants to find out something out something about a subject, they usually visit the campus online library. Most student that I know utilize the library for group study’” (Are College 15). Online is the place to go for resources. If need you can meet with in groups to study there but that's about it. “‘Every time I visit our campus library, it look like a social hub and not a place where research is done,’ comments Lorneth Peters, instructor at the Austin Peay State University”(Are College 15). Even teachers are starting to notice the decreased usage of the libraries resources. Some even think that this should be put to a stop, just to stop from losing the books we
Librarians are defined as “a person, typically with a degree in library science, who administers or assists in a library.” In truth, they are much more than that. In a recent interview with Traci Glass, the Teen Librarian at the Eugene Public library, we explored her personal story with becoming a librarian, including how it has benefitted and affected her life.
The article “The North West London Blues” argues that public libraries still remain an important part of the society and should be preserved. There is no doubt that she is, in fact, a part of the minority who has the same opinion due to the reason that most people tend to prefer electronics over physical copy of books, especially the younger ones. Therefore, it is important for the author to use persuasive methods to gain more support. The author, Zadie Smith, uses evidence, reasonings, and stylistic elements in order to gain support.
One of the things that I have learned is how to use different resources at college. One of the resources is the library. Since the library is closed right now I learned how to use the online library. I did not know how to use the library website at first, and know I know how to use it better. I use the website for almost all my classes. I use it for finding articles, and doing research. I think this resource will be the most helpful to me, because I can use the online resources to find articles, books, movies, and music. If I need to do research on a topic, I can always request a book and check it out from the library. The COL 101 class has also helped me with my future.
Think about it, when was the last time you physically touched, or even witnessed the touching of, a physical dictionary? I myself can attest that although I am currently student in a high school with a perfectly functioning library, I have never come close the books within it. As a matter of fact the only reason I have ever ventured into that abandoned testament called "the library” is to print things for class. Why would I bother to go looking through a book when I can ask Google, Siri and Dictionary.com just about anything I need to know. More ...
Steven Pinker states that “search engines lower our intelligence, encouraging us to skim on the surface of knowledge …” (1). Many students are not reading their assigned books anymore. Sparknotes and other web sites such as Shmoop have provided students with resources which are not useful. Students’ skim through these sites to read books. Most of the websites gives students’ plot summaries which are from another person’s take on that book .This damages the student 's’ chances of actually reading and understanding a book and having their own opinion .The more we run to search engines for answers the less we shall learn . Technology has taken the place of many students’ brains which causes them to think they are dumb. This leads to the need of searching for answers online at all
As the times are changing so is the way people attain information. The evolution of technology is ever-changing and advancing. Text books went from being our prime source of information to decorations in our homes. But is this new source of information making us stupid? I am of course riffing to the tech giant and enormous informational hub that is Google.
It changes the way we read and how we interpret books. With the help of technology, a book can change with the implementation of links to “...be taken to a related dictionary entry, Wikipedia article, or list of Google search results” (p.102). Reading a book and reading an electronic book is distinctly different from one another. An electronic book may lead to different sources of information which will easily cause our brain to get used to this format of acquiring information. It can also become a distraction towards our main goal and cause us to wander off and find different information. Link after link, you slowly withdraw from your book. Our views on printed books would vastly change causing us to become uninterested and would prefer the book electronically. The difference is the electronic book’s words “...become wrapped in all the distractions of the networked computer” (p.104). It is more than likely that mostly everybody will read an electronic book than a printed
. This article discusses the stereotypical way of librarians. Most librarians are middle ages. They wear buns. Also talks about how library is seen by many people as a women’s job.
... more now about an electronic library than I did in the past, I still have plenty of information left to learn. For instance, many times, I overuse Internet sources rather than seeking different types of research.
To assist students in their research, a library-based Course Page specifically designed for the course, coupled with a librarian presentation were found to be useful to students. In some cases this article may not be as relevant to the modern day times because we have more advanced research databases, but libraries are still important because the books are factual topics which could eventually help us find exactly what we’re looking for when the internet or any other recourse is not
“Google can bring you back 100,000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one” writes novelist Neil Gaiman. What Gaiman, perhaps means is that while Google will take you speeding to the point, a librarian will push you in the direction of more research giving you the ability to think more on your own. We may hate the librarian and love Google. That is the heart of the problem because by delivering information fast and conveniently, Google doesn’t make our own brain work. While Google makes our lives easier, it can also take away from our ability to think because Google gives answers and thinking make us deeper as a person.
However, iIn spite of the current pre-eminence of e-books, it may be argued that they are not likely to replace print books anytime soon or possibly at all. Both formats have their advantages and drawbacks, which makes for one of them difficult to replace the other. Moreover, they serve differents needs and purposes. E-books are famous for their portability. Hundreds of e-books can be stored on a single device. Thus e-books don’t take shelving space and are convenient to take on travel, while even a few paper books are bulky and quite heavy to carry around. Numerous e-books are in open access, while paper books are not routinely available free of charge. E-books may be acquired and accessed immediately online, a feature I enjoy especially and treasure most: many a time I was able to buy and read an e-book at home within minutes of learning of its existence. Needless to say, e-books are considerably easier to cite and quote than print books, since the copy-paste feature spares us the trouble of retyping the quoted text. Another important advantage of digital books is their specialized software, which makes reading much easier: search and reference tools, changeable font size and day/night mode, dictionaries. Last but not least, e-books conserv...
It was used from at least 3100B.C. Hieroglyphics were symbols like pictures that are written down. Some pictures represented ideas or objects, in this script. The reason for why the Egyptians started using this writing system because they had to have a way to keep track of the country’s growing wealth. Despite to the fact that the empire grew, they need to invent more pictures for more complex ideas. Egyptians wrote writings on clays and stones, at the beginning.
The world is at your fingertips with the internet, you can do anything imaginable. It is the schools duty to have the internet, forget the library, I’m sure students would agree with me that using the internet would be much easier to find the information you are looking for than the library. If you don’t know how to use the internet then you are missing out, anything you want is on there. The internet alone could be a career, there are online businesses that make just as much money as jobs outside your home.
It seems that every year people turn increasingly toward living their lives through technology. It has inundated society, families, jobs, and lives. Three developing trends that in some ways overlap each other are specifically related to living in a technology world. These trends are particularly important to the school librarian because many students are living their lives through the web. In order to reach those students, the librarian must be knowledgeable about the trends and applications and be able to use and apply them in a library setting. By using them, the librarian makes the library relevant to students, and brings the library to students where the students are.
