In chapter 3 of How Full is Your Bucket, it is about how to inspire people around you by filling their buckets through positivity. It also talks about how people are affected through negative and positive interactions in business and in the outside world other than business. And by filling other people’s buckets by being positive to them, they will be more successful, and improve group performance. Being negative can have many side effects, and one positive or negative situation can change your whole life. With these capabilities in school and out, programs will run more smoothly and be more satisfying. This book taught me many skills about leadership, but most importantly, it showed me how to focus on the positive rather than the negative things in life, to inspire people to do better in life. …show more content…
What stood out to me in chapter 3 is the concept that every moment matters. Some of the ideas the author wrote about was that one negative moment has the potential to affect your whole life. For example, research shows how teachers talk to their students affect how they do in the future. If a teacher gives him/her students praise or compliments then the student will improve 71%, a huge leap in success. However if the teacher gives students criticism and negative talk about the student, the overall grade will only improve by 19%, a tragic drop from day 1 to day 5. This drop occurred due to talking trash about the project to the student. Worst of all when the students get ignored the overall improvement in the study group is only 5%! The lesson learned from this is that positive feedback and even bad attention is better than being ignored. What I think about this study is that being positive is important and can determine your grade in having an A or an F. I definitely disagree with this study that teachers praise and compliment few people, but criticize and ignore the rest, every moment matters. Teachers and even students being positive can make the school run more efficiently. That’s why being positive is extremely important to be. What I disagree with this chapter is that a huge percentage of the world mainly focuses on having an F rather than focussing on the A’s. When a student does well and receives an A, rather than recognizing that grade and areas of talents, teachers and parents skip that and focus on raising the lower grades instead. I think principals, teachers, and parents should focus on the positive A rather than the negative F first so the student feels complimented instead of being criticized, and can also make a productive conversation. Another interesting study in the chapter is about how being positive is good for your health.
I was surprised to read that being negative can be harmful to your health and might even shorten your life. This means positive emotions are necessary daily requirements to have a long healthy life. I think that this statement reminds me to be positive in my life. For example, negative emotions can lead to serious problems like stress, anger, hostility of the mind and body. I can relate to this because when I have negative feelings like when I strike out in a baseball game it affects my whole game after that. And when one person gets angry and one negative emotion can change the whole game for the team. However, when I stay positive in a game by patting teammates on the back, saying what good plays they did in the game, and rooting on the batter up and even the pitcher on the mound, it keeps our team in a good mood. And being in a good mood and pumped up is the best situation to be in, in a game. If someone gets upset, as a leader it is my job to get him back in a good mood. One positive emotion can change the whole game for the team. This goes back to filling people's
buckets. From this book, How Full is Your is Your Bucket chapter 3, I learned many good ideas on how to apply positive leadership in my life instead of negative and the huge effect it has on people.
I believe you can be positive during a conflict. When being positive during a conflict, a better outcome will occur. For example, 6 million people died from a tragic event, the Holocaust. Many lives were lost, a majority were frightened, and most were hopeless. Yet, some people stayed positive during this horrible time.
Award-winning author Mandy Hale once stated, “Without negativity, life would be amazing.” However, this statement does not always prove to be true. Today’s modern community generates a judgement that negative experiences will ruin your life, but studies show that negativity can actually result in positive change. For example, negativity can positively change teenagers actions, introduce teenager’s to more supportive environments, and help fix broken relationships.
People push being happy on society as a total must in life; sadness is not an option. However, the research that has conducted to the study of happiness speaks otherwise. In this essay Sharon Begley's article "Happiness: Enough Already" critiques and analyzes societies need to be happy and the motivational affects it has on life. Begley believes that individuals do not always have to be happy, and being sad is okay and even good for us. She brings in the research of other professionals to build her claim that extreme constant happiness is not good for people. I strongly agree that we need to experience sadness to build motivation in life and character all around.
What does it mean to be positive? Being positive is displaying affirmation, acceptance, or certainty toward an object, idea, or person. “Trauma is used when describing emotionally painful and distressing experiences or situations that can overwhelm a person’s ability to cope” (John A. Rich, Theodore Corbin, & Sandra Bloom, 2008. Trauma could include death, violence, verbal and nonverbal words and actions, discrimination, racism, etc. Trauma can have serious long-term effects on a person’s health, mental stability, and physical body.
n the book “How full is your Bucket,” the author Don Clifton use the Bucket as a metaphor of a dipper and a bucket that diminished or adds to an emotional banks as we go on through our day.
The narrative piece, How full is your bucket, positive strategies for work and life, written by Tom Rath and his grandfather Donald Clifton, outlines a unique description of the impact of how sharing positive interactions with others (socially, intimately, in the work environment, and strangers) ensures a more fulfilling life. This book brings to light how negativity impacts your own life and the lives of individuals surrounding you. An interesting concept that was studied during the Korean War, the American captives were denies positive social interactions, and were denied support from loved ones (Rath & Clifton, 2009, p. 25). The soldiers were ultimately swayed to have a negative outlook and hopeless existence which unfortunately led to their demise. Negativity spreads to others like wildfire and takes away from your
Positive health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, but the capacity to withstand challenges and to accomplish life’s activities with pleasure and energy).”
Also the book The Devil’s Arithmetic is another fantastic example for keeping positivity. The book is about a girl who is magically put back in time to the Holocaust. She tries to just go along with what is happening because she is convinced it is a dream. This thought is looking at things in a positive way because she doesn’t completely live in fear in this world she is put in. She does the best of her ability help out the people that are there. Her positivity inspires others, and now they too have a positive attitude. The positivity kept most of them from suffering a terrible
As the famous American industrialist and businessman, Henry Ford, once said, “Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right” (qtd. in BrainyQuote), but disputes have recently popped up concerning the truth of that statement. The vast majority of Americans agree that positive thinking is a person’s key to success and happiness. However, some researchers are now saying that positive thinking can actually have an adverse effect on a person’s life. It has long been believed that optimism is good for a person, but new research is beginning to bring to light the negative aspects of positive thinking. Optimism has always been viewed as a positive trait, but people are now seeing that at times it can be just as harmful as helpful.
B. Cade Massey once said, “It 's gotten to the point where people really feel pressure to think and talk in an optimistic way” (Massey). Optimism is generally seen as healthy, while pessimism is generally seen as dangerous. The difference between optimism and pessimism is a difference in perspective and mindset. An optimist has a positive perspective and cheerful mindset, while a pessimist has a negative perspective and a gloomy mindset. There are consequences to both perspectives. But which has better consequences for one’s health? Assuming that it is moderated, pessimism is healthy for a person’s well-being. Pessimism is more realistic than optimism because it prepares people for an unpredictable and possibly negative life. Pessimism is also better for expectations compared to future surprises. Pessimists are either proven right or pleasantly surprised. Pessimism is a healthier mindset to have than optimism.
According to Katherine Hurst,”A key part of the Law of Attraction is understanding that where you place your focus can have an intense impact on what happens to you. If you spend your days wallowing in regrets about the past or fears of the future, you’ll likely see more negativity appearing, but if you look for the silver lining in every experience then you’ll soon start to see positivity surrounding you every day” (Hurst). This basically means that thinking positively will make life get better despite what’s going on. Focusing more on the negative side will make an impact on what will happen next. According to ManagementStudyGuide.com,“There is light at the end of the tunnel. An individual must develop a positive attitude to avoid disagreements, conflicts and lead a happy and a peaceful life” (ManagementStudyGuide.com). This shows that thinking positively will lead a happier life. Thinking negatively will just cause misery because it’ll cause more conflicts in
As positive psychology began to be more thoroughly researched, studies showed that “positive emotions do more than simply feel good in the present. The undoing effect suggests that positive emotions can reduce the physiological "damage" on the cardiovascular system obtained by feeling negative emotions. But some other research suggests that there 's more to it than that. It appears that experiencing positive emotions increases the likelihood that one will feel good in the future”(Fredrickson). It is known that when stressed, depressed, angry, etc. the body physiologically reacts with a weaker immune system, unhealthy levels of blood pressure, quickening heart rate, adverse affects on the body. Thinking and feeling positive helps reduce those effects and even promotes better health for the future. With the help of positive psychologists, the public can benefit from this newly founded positively driven research. It has already reached hospitals and real patients. “A recent study by Dr. Gretchen A. Bernes of the University of North Carolina (USA) has said that an arthritic patient with a positive frame of mind is likely to suffer less pain than a patient who is pessimistic. The study covered 480 patients aged 65 and above who were suffering from arthritis. It concluded that people with positive attitude were more positive in performing their daily chores like walking, lifting objects, climbing stairs and getting in and out of the car. On the other hand negative personalities were more susceptible to pain” (Tapping the Power of Positive Thinking). This study shows that there is a real physical correlation between mindset and pain. And, that is just one of the numerous studies taken with the driving force of positive psychology. The power of positive thinking is nearly limitless. Just as positive psychology is a beginning itself, it’s a beginning for
The world is divided in two types of individuals - positive thinkers and negative thinkers. Negative thinkers are known to suffer more from health issues as compared to positive thinkers, as positive thoughts not only makes you healthier but it can also certainly help you lead a healthier and accomplished life. Hence, it is best to avoid negativity and adopt positivity as the brain easily catches negative thoughts and once the negative thoughts appear, they continue to multiply. Negative thinking thus not only affects your health but also hampers the other phases of life. Hence, it is imperative to know what negative thinking can do to your overall wellbeing.
(Emotions) A lot of people know that emotions play a big role in their everyday life such as their actions. The old saying actions speak louder than words. That would be your emotions speaking just without the sound coming from your mouth. There are a lot of people that show no emotion at all. “Emotions that are not… released but buried within the body …can cause serious illness, including cancer, arthritis, and many types of chronic illnesses.” (Emotions) This next sentence is very important because it talks about the different illnesses that affect us every single day when we let the negative emotion take over. “Negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, frustration, depression cause chemical reactions in your body that are very different form the chemicals released when you feel positive emotions such as happy, content, loved accepted.”
According to Huffington Post, “when you are experiencing positive emotions like joy, contentment, and love, you will see more possibilities in your life. These findings were among the first that suggested positive emotions broaden your sense of possibility and open your mind up to more options” (Clear). Even the littlest of beneficial factors that may come along can help situations seem as though they are not quite as bad. By noticing positive occurrences, troublesome times will pass. In the book Dear Miss Breed by Joanne Oppenheim, a young writer remembers, “This trip has made me realize the wonderful work of nature. Her delicate work in shaping the stone mountains, the beautiful coloring of the surroundings—it seemed as if I was looking at the picture or a painting of a genius.” Although the young girl was taken from her home and family and was being deported to an internment camp, she found the beauty of nature, which helped her remain positive that her new life would not be that bad. The young girl was optimistic that her new life would be different, and that she would just have to live in each moment. Also, “a positive attitude doesn't mean ignoring life's troubles. It just means being an optimist and looking for the good in things, rather than being a pessimist and concentrating on the bad in things. Sometimes your perspective can make all the difference in the world” (Wonderopolis). Major upheavals can be dealt with in many ways. However, remaining positive by reminding oneself of the good that still lies in their day is of the utmost importance. Even when all hope may feel lost, there is always something to be grateful and worth living
