In the film UP, Carl Fredricksen is portrayed as a frail older aged man who lived a sedentary and isolated lifestyle. Carl may have not been very active in the beginning of the film; however, his physical wellness may be considered good as he does not have any chronic diseases or illnesses. According to Rowe and Kahn, the absence of any chronic diseases or illnesses makes it easier to age as there is no stress about the possibility of sickness. Although Carl had slightly limited mobility, his physical wellness transformed over the course of the movie. Carl’s physical wellness was different from some of the other characters in the film, such as Charles Muntz, a famous explorer. Charles Muntz was a famous adventurer who Carl and Ellie admired as his fame formed after his expeditions in South America discovering foreign and exotic animals. Charles set out to prove the existence of a large bird called a snipe, which led to his separation from community and left him isolated in Paradise Falls. Muntz was also an elderly man, but his physical wellness was more advanced than that of Fredricksen because he was continuously determined, physically active, and showed great strength. Charles is portrayed as being physically fit from a young age and maintaining his physical wellness through older age as well. It is assumed that Charles maintained his strength and physical health through consistent rigorous exercise, exploration, and chasing after his goals. In the wake of one of Americas economic decline, the middle class bandaged up bouts of anxiety with healthism. Healthism fabricates a belief of prioritization of health and fitness over all other values, therefore becoming a feasible way for people to pretend they were creating impactful changes in society. However, healthism did not cure the original problem amongst the middle class, it merely added more side effects. Barbara Ehrenreich, in “The Naked Truth about Fitness,” emphasizes societies declining state of virtues caused by the growing acceptance in healthism. Accepting healthism as a virtue developed into one of Americas greatest illnesses. The widespread epidemic of healthism across America corrupts fundamental values.
A normal person reaches the highest point of growth and development in the time of their 20s. After that, there is generally a depreciation in our body’s physical, and possibly mental functioning. Although the disease is not necessarily a part of our aging process, our body is more likely to suffer from it during the latter half of our lives. Nowadays, more and more people make an attempt to improve their health conditions through exercises, diet and medications. However, living a healthy lifestyle can only prevent people from developing some fatal diseases; it cannot get rid of all of them.
Healthy ageing impacts on the health system as more and more aged people are more likely to be active and healthy nowadays with an improved quality of life through various attributes such as physical and mental stimulation, along with the adoption of good behaviours, such as a healthy/balanced diet, exercise, regular health checks and having hobbies, which each help to improve their quality of life. Ultimately, healthy ageing impacts on the health-care system through adopted behaviours and values chosen – As more aged people are interacting regularly within social groups, sporting groups and many others, they are able to freely interact with others, along with participating within certain activities, which help to physically and mentally stimulate them. Through these actions, it reduces the risk of illness and disease, working to improve the physical and mental health of the aged as they move through the ageing process. It is impacting on the health system due to the fact that, as the aged become more competent, they are less likely to access certain services and facilities due to their physical and mental state. Healthy People are a nationwide program set by the United States Department of Health and Human Services with the objectives to promote health and prevent disease. The Healthy People program was first initiated in 1979, followed by Healthy People 1990, 2000 and 2010 with the same goals and objectives to promote health and prevent diseases. Due to the accomplishments that has been achieved in the previous years under this program, the Healthy People 2020 expanded or rather broadened their goals and objectives beyond disease prevention, health promotion and reducing health disparities, but to also eliminate healthcare disparities that has plagued this nation by the year 2020. The governing body, the United States Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for coordinating this program; track the progress of these objectives so as to improve the health of the population. Among the various goals set by this body, only three will be discussed in this paper to gain more insight as to what it entails. These include health equity to improve the health of all groups; social and physical environments that promote good health; and to promote quality of life, healthy development and healthy behavior across life stages.
Who we are is directly related to our environment that we are nurtured around. Our development is essential to who we are as adults and will be the very fabric connected to how, what and why we act and think the way we do. I’ve decided to talk about early childhood development, which plays the most crucial part in the foundation of who we will be. At this stage we are sponges soaking up this new world we are now apart of. I will discuss physical development, cognitive development and psychosocial development pertains to early childhood development.

We designed our utopian society to be very similar by making it a priority not to overwork citizens and putting equal emphasis on work, leisure, exercise, and rest. This important practice in our utopia ensures that society will not be lacking in anything that could result in inadequate physical, emotional, or mental health. For example, ensuring that people have the ability to set aside time each day for exercise is a key aspect of living a healthy lifestyle. An article by TrueSport explains the role and benefit of exercise in promoting health and wellness in life. People spend millions of dollars every year on drugs that they are convinced that will help you lose weight, grow hair, reduce stress, anxiety, and plenty of other things. I wish I could have all of the money they have wasted on those products. What if they knew of something that would help them lose weight, improve cardiovascular health, help control stress, help improve muscle, bone, and joint health, benefit diabetic problems, and could do many other things to benefit their health? Exercise is something that is proven to help all of these things, but not a lot of people exercise on a regular basis. This is something that you do not have to pay for, so what is stopping everyone from exercising? There are many positive effects of exercising and very little negative effects. I wonder how much a pill that helped all of those things would set you back?
It will be important when considering Joes level of positive health to not just consider the absence of disease, but as the cumulative effects of three measures: 1) biological indicators that include measures of physical processes such as cardiac and pulmonary health; 2) Subjective experience of well-being, such as; optimism, hopefulness, vigor, and vitality; 3) Functional measures that can include an assessment on how effectively Joe is accomplishing his daily activities and his adjustment to getting older.
