In the film UP, Carl Fredricksen is portrayed as a frail older aged man who lived a sedentary and isolated lifestyle. Carl may have not been very active in the beginning of the film; however, his physical wellness may be considered good as he does not have any chronic diseases or illnesses. According to Rowe and Kahn, the absence of any chronic diseases or illnesses makes it easier to age as there is no stress about the possibility of sickness. Although Carl had slightly limited mobility, his physical wellness transformed over the course of the movie. Carl went from being mostly inactive to engaging in vigorous physical activities such as running, hiking, and climbing. Carl’s physical wellness was different from some of the other characters in the film, such as Charles Muntz, a famous explorer. Charles Muntz was a famous adventurer who Carl and Ellie admired as his fame formed after his expeditions in South America discovering foreign and exotic animals. Charles set out to prove the existence of a large bird called a snipe, which led to his separation from community and left him isolated in Paradise Falls. Muntz was also an elderly man, but his physical wellness was more advanced than that of Fredricksen because he was continuously determined, physically active, and showed great strength. Charles is portrayed as being physically fit from a young age and maintaining his physical wellness through older age as well. It is assumed that Charles maintained his strength and physical health through consistent rigorous exercise, exploration, and chasing after his goals. Charles may have preserved his great health due to his environment, living alone in the wilderness on a mission required him to be active and strong in order to live comfortably and achieve his desired
