Aging is the process of becoming older. It represents the multidimensional change over the life span. Everyone ages physically, psychologically, and socially. These changes happen continuously from birth to death. Only people who have lived to old age are survivors. “The Notebook” is a 2011 American romantic drama film about two survivors at the end of their aging process. This film is related to the field of gerontology because it mentions two different aging concepts: disease and death. Every day, Duke goes to a nursing home to meet an old lady who is suffering from memory loss. A normal person reaches the highest point of growth and development in the time of their 20s. After that, there is generally a depreciation in our body’s physical, and possibly mental functioning. Although the disease is not necessarily a part of our aging process, our body is more likely to suffer from it during the latter half of our lives. Nowadays, more and more people make an attempt to improve their health conditions through exercises, diet and medications. However, living a healthy lifestyle can only prevent people from developing some fatal diseases; it cannot get rid of all of them. Sometimes, a disease is already built into our genetic hardware and we will have to encounter it sooner or later. For example, the old lady in the film “The Notebook” has to live with Alzheimer for the last years of her life. It is no doubt that Alzheimer is a fatal disease. It ranks number six in the list of leading causes of death in the United States. Currently, there is no known method to totally cure Alzheimer, only treatment to slow down the disease’s process. At the early stage of Alzheimer, the patients suffer from mild memory loss. In the later stages, the patients will eventually lose their ability to communicate and interact with the environment. The fact that the cause of Alzheimer is believed to be genetic with many genes usually involved means that people with a family history of Alzheimer will be prone to get this disease as they
