Islam was a religion that was founded in the 7th century by Muhammad. Back in the seventh century CE. They were two empires that dominate the area that we call today the Middle East; those two were the Byzantine-Greek-Christian Empire and the Sassand-Prsian-Zoraastrian Empire. The Arabian Peninsula lay between the two. The merchant called Muhammad began to have religious visions around 610, and by the time, he died in 632, “all Arabia had accepted his creed of Islam” (p.22). It took one century later for his followers to control what we now call, Palestine, Syria, North Africa, Egypt, Spain, and part of France. The Arabic expansion was in fact important, because it affected the development of Western Civilization and the history of Africa …show more content…
When it came to the clan, they expected loyalty from their members and in return, they would be provided with support and protection. Some Arabs had some religious rules and rituals in common, for example they kept three months of the year sacred, in which during that time all fighting’s will stop in order to peacefully attend holy ceremonies. While, some other Arabs would find urbanized lifestyle of the cities to be immoral and corrupt. When it comes to Muhammad’s revelations, they were written down by his followers, during his lifetime and were organized into chapters called sura, which was after his death. The remarks of the Qur’an are the sacred book of Islam, and the only remarks left by Muhammad. Muslims around the world see the Qur’an as the direct words of God to his prophet Muhammad. They also have the obligation of the jihad to strive or struggle to lead a virtuous life and to also spread God’s rule and law, the Islamic belief of “striving in the path of God” is very similar to the central feature of Muslim doctrine of the coming Day of Judgment. They also believe that with conviction, the Day of Judgment will actually come and all of the actions and thoughts of Muslims should be oriented towards the rewards of heaven. There is also the five pillars of Islam, in which Muslims must recite a profession of faith in God and by following the sacred law of praying, fasting, giving aims to the poor, and pilgrimage to Mecca, the individual will merit the rewards of heaven, meaning that they could get salvation. The Muslim Empire began to expand vastly under the Umayyads, with the empire becoming so large many people were converting to Islam religion. The Umayyads were the second of the four major caliphates after the death of Muhammad. The Empire used many different ways to spread the Islamic civilization consisting of war, classes, and appeal. The Islamic civilization spread so strongly because of the way it allured the common man.
For example, the spread of Islam to the Byzantines and the Persians. The other caliphs (Umar, Uthman and Ali) expanded the Islamic empire rapidly and grew faster than any other religion. The Muslims conquered a massive amount of land from the Indus River, across North Africa and into Spain. There were many factors that helped Islam succeed; for example, people would rather fight for God and their salvation instead of fighting for a king, the use of military force by the Muslims and how easy it was to convert to Islam.
Islam is a monotheistic religion which is originated from the Middle East or more specifically in the Arabian Peninsula early in the 7th century. This religion was founded on the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed who named this religion after the Arabic word acceptance. Islam has 2 major sects the Sunni and Shi’a. This split occurred when Mohammed died. The Sunni believed that the new leader of Islam should be determined through election but the Shi’a thought that the new leader should be Imam Ali a cousin and son in law of Mohammed. Another branch of Islam is Druze but only a small minority of Muslims who live in Lebanon, Syria and Palestine are followers of this sect (3 Faiths with One God - Islam, Arab American National Museum).
In the seventh century, a new faith arose in the Middle East known as the Islamic religion. Just like Christianity and Judaism, the Islamic religion believed in one God known as Allah. The founder of Islam was a very unique individual known as Mohammad. Mohammad had an amazing spiritual experience that transformed his life and made a great impact in history. He experienced visions and revelations from Allah which he accepted as messages. Mohammed
Religion has greatly influenced western civilization. Religion is a way to express ourselves in our own way. To be able to choose who or what we believe in freely. This gives us a sense of individualism and helps our civilization to grow and develop each religion. Just about every ancient culture practiced religion in some way. They were either monotheist, polytheist, atheist, or believed in “magic”. Western civilization was impacted by religion in more ways than one. Every religion contributed in their own way. Some religions even worked together to help create a stronger, more structured civilization.
Islam, on the other hand, started in Mecca, where Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) was born. He was believed to be that last nabi (messenger) that Allah will give to the world. The religion was not well accepted in its city of origin though, due to the opposition the Prophet faced as a nascent community . Later, he was invited to Medina and Islam expanded from there.
In the Islamic faith there are five pillars that they must follow to their best ability. The Salaht, the Hajj, they must give to the poor, fasting during the month of Ramadan, and repetition of the creed, "There is no God but Allah; Muhammad is the messenger of Allah." These pillars are more like obligations in the Islamic religion.
