Genghis Khan’s Creation of the World’s Largest Empire Throughout history, there have been many great and powerful empires that formed through intense battles and wars. These same empires have seen failure and destruction, collapsing as quickly as they were built. However, before their inevitable collapse, many saw triumphant victories that have influenced the world and shaped the society in which we live now. One such victory is that of Genghis Khan, founder of the largest contiguous empire in history (Gibson 93). Although most would agree that many factors played a part in the success of the great Mongolian empire, this paper argues that empire’s accomplishments can be attributed to the leadership of Genghis Khan because of his barbaric character, governing methods, and advanced battle tactics that enabled the Mongolian empire to become the biggest of all time.

In 1215, the Battle of Zhongdu was fought between the Mongols and the Jurchen Jin dynasty in the location of modern day Beijing, China. Although the fight was difficult and tedious, Khan’s ruthless demeanor proved to be effective once again, and the Mongols were triumphant. He interfered with the Jin dynasty’s food source and starved the inhabitants of the city until they accepted defeat. As a result, starving enemy soldiers resorted to cannibalism and ate the flesh of fallen soldiers (Woodman 164).
