As the first English king to have the title "The Great", Alfred the Great was the first king to have been the king of the Anglo Saxons. He was born in the village of Wannating (which is now wantage). At the age of 4 he was anointed king over the Anglo Saxons by Pope Leo IV but it wasn't until he was the age of 21 after the short reign of his two older brothers that he took power. He was best know for defending his kingdom against the invading vikings and of how he greatly influenced the British people During the reign of his brothers, he plays little role in the political affairs of the kingdom.Then the Vikings or Danes as they were known to the Anglo-Saxons invaded in 865 and in 878 they had conquered three of the 4 Providences of the kingdom
