Horizon House, Inc. (HHINC) was creatively established by a visionary with goals. In the late 1950’s there was a woman named Marcella Schmoeger who suffered from a medical condition that kept her hospitalized during her recovery. At this time, Marcella witnessed many psychiatric patients remaining hospitalized due to the limited supports available. Due to these observations, Marcella had a vision to help people with mental illness. Years later, Marcella began taking these ideas and concerns to others in the community to address the social problems that individuals with mental illness faced, thus, in 1952 HHINC as created (Horizon House, Inc., 2016). Marcella raised awareness to the supports needed for people with mental illness, moreover, there were visions and goals that were established and shared by others. Therefore, HHINC was built on qualities of transformational leadership. Northouse (2016) describes transformational leadership as a process that creates significant change through a clear vision and shared goals. The leaders and followers of HHINC have one common goal and that is to provide a fulfilling life to those served in the community. There are three divisions within HHINC, (1) behavioral health services (BHS), (2) intellectual and developmental disability (IDS) services, and (3) homeless services (HS). BHS includes programs that provide supportive living, residential treatment, employment, education, and psychiatric rehabilitation. During the 1960’s, America’s solution to the growing population of mentally ill citizens was to relocate these individuals into mental state institutions. While the thought of isolating mentally ill patients from the rest of society in order to focus on their treatment and rehabilitation sounded like a smart idea, the outcome only left patients more traumatized. These mental hospitals and state institutions were largely filled with corrupt, unknowledgeable, and abusive staff members in an unregulated environment. Healthcare for the Homeless (HCH) started in 1985 and was one of the first 19 Federal Funded projects. In the early 80’s, they recognized that homelessness was an issue. In 1987, it was operated out of bonds in Liberty Heights. In 1989, they moved to Park Ave and stayed there for 20 years. In 2010, they moved to Fallsway and still are there till this day and are expanding their building. HCH provides tons of services for the homeless population such as physical health care services, behavioral health care services, and supportive services such as finding housing, keeping housing, finding jobs and much more. HCH wants to decrease the homeless population statistics and provide second chances for everyone individual.
The concept of transformational leadership relies on appropriate leadership approaches for mission success. AFDD 1-1 describes three leadership competencies: person, people/team, organization Effective leaders (tactical level) need to build face-to-face and interpersonal relationships that directly influence behavior and values. Effective leaders (operational level) need to build team dynamics for small groups and squadrons. Effective leaders (strategic level) need to build strategy and provide direction in a broad spectrum.
In this paper, I will inform you about issues in globalization, power, followership and cultural change in the perspective of a health leader. I will identify three major health issues that are global but has the potential to affect the United States health care system. I will describe these global health issues influence health leaders. I will relate global leadership with transformational leadership. I will illuminate three elements of cultural and diversity within health care organizations. You will find a table of cultural attributes to be made aware of. The article I chose to discuss for this week’s discussion is by Doody, C. & Doody, O. (2012). This article focuses on transformational leadership and its use in nursing/health care. This article draws attention to the many changes that have taken place in nursing/healthcare and how nursing theories and nursing frameworks must continue to evolve as changes are made. As nursing theories and nursing frameworks continue to advance and change, leadership styles must also continue to evolve as time progresses and as changes are made in the healthcare field. Why now? Why are we focusing on transformational leadership? Healthcare costs are continuing to rise. HUD issued a draft to change the definition of homelessness that is described in the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid transition to Housing Act.
