The Honors College at James Madison University offers specific and in-depth mentorship and classes to help the student understand their field of interest by working outside the school environment and working hands- on. The Honors College provides all the resources necessary to assist the students needs through this process. With all that this program is willing to provide, the student must be willing to dedicate themselves to the program. I believe that an important way to be sure of their dedication is through their high school career. An ideal student for this college should be one who has an active history throughout high school. From my experiences in high school, I know the kind of academic environment I want for my college experience. For the last four years, I’ve thrived as part of the International Baccalaureate program at Poudre High School, which bears significant similarities to the Norlin Scholars program: both involve a community of engaged, academically motivated students who take rigorous core classes together and live within a larger school community. The IB program has been instrumental in my development as a student and as a person during my time in high school. I’ve found that being surrounded by brilliant, motivated peers is both motivating and intellectually invigorating for me, and drives me to reach new heights. By being placed in these classes, they earn the title of being knows as intellectuals. Another advantage of being placed into higher level classes is that these students will have the best teachers. Excellent grades will also give them the opportunity to be a part of prestigious academic groups such as the National Junior Honor Society. Only kids with the best grades can get into this society, making it highly regarded and ensuring they are part of an elite group. A recurring theme when it comes to many stories, either novels or short stories, is a realization of one’s identity. It may be either the main character or supporting characters that undergo an epiphany. While it is uncertain if his views were changed, the narrator of Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin went through a catharsis by the end of the short story. After reuniting with his former heroin addict brother, Sonny, the narrator tries to make him conform to the society. Sonny, on the other side, would much rather enjoy art such as Charlie Parker. Likewise, In Hell-Heaven by Jhumpa Lahiri, through the conflict between the parents and the younger generation, the inner conflict of cultures surfaces. However, through the use of the symbols such as the trembling cup in the final scene and the conflict in Hell-Heaven, Baldwin and Lahiri demonstrates the realization and struggle of the main characters.
However, I have had the privilege to be a part of my school’s Model United Nations team, where I/in which I collaborate with and discuss our world’s most pressing issues with other students. The opportunity to attend Governor’s Honors Program is a chance to further my skills both in working individually and collaborating with students in a subject area that I am likely to pursue a career in. I believe that Governor’s Honors Program gives students opportunities to learn and grow that cannot be attained in a regular school classroom; and these opportunities will give me knowledge and skills necessary to achieve my goals. I endeavor to obtain excellence in my academics; I wish to exemplify scholarship by constantly asking the whys and hows of things. I will not let a bad grade define who I am as a student or who I will become. I also want to take the most challenging classes available, not because it will look good on my college application, but because I genuinely love the concept of learning and discovering new things. Education doesn’t end after high school, so I plan to attend university, eager to attain the knowledge to better understand my world: and expand it.
Throughout my educational experience, I’ve found that I thrive best in the most advanced courses where less time is spent on learning information and more time is spent on discussion. For example, in my IB HL Math course students are encouraged to discover new theorems and tools through teamwork and class discussion rather than just being given these new theorems and tools. This has allowed me to understand calculus on a deeper level and has made it one of my favorite courses. My other classes operate similarly in that students lead the discussion while the teacher observes and occasionally moves the discussion along. Students are encouraged to connect curricula across subjects, such as when we discuss physics in math, human rights in biology, or psychology in literature. During my early education, meaning elementary school and middle school, I was a very average student. I gave an average amount of effort to my grades, and I received above average results. This did not bother me, until the end of my 8th-grade year. At this point in the year, I was filling out what classes I desired to take the following year, my freshman year. I realized that from this point forward, I had to take my education much more serious, in order to get accepted to whichever college I desired. therefore, when planning my classes, I decided to challenge myself more than I ever have in the past, and take multiple honors courses. I assumed because of my grades, that I had what it took to be an honors-level student, but I was very wrong. One teacher, Mrs. Johnson, made me realize the kind of effort, time and energy needed to be devoted to my education.
Additionally, prestigious institutions need to take initiative to create new programs that will make college a painless transition for first generation students by implementing new policies such as mentorship or clubs. While many colleges and universities have not taken the initiative to help first-generation students, North Carolina State University is one of the few exceptions. As a fellow first generation college student at North Carolina State University, I have reaped many benefits from the different organizations they have around campus. At the Poole College of Management, I was assigned a professional mentor in my future line of work that made the transition into college a better experience for me. After listening to his forums, I was able to use the skills I had learnt from my parents and apply them to college and my study habits, benefiting me in countless ways.

Many men knew that if women were educated, they would not depend on the men. For centuries, only men were educated. In the 1800, women started to come out of their house and reached for the education in colleges. Most people were antagonistic to having women go to college and having the same education as men. They thought that women should just take care of their husband and kids. The society thought that coed colleges were more barbaric, because they thought that men and women could not work together. The women’s colleges became a light for the women in 1800’s. Women learned to stand up for their rights by getting educated in college.
Liberty University is my dream school because of its solid Biblical foundation, opportunities for students, and excellent educational program. I have found all three of these qualities in my interaction with the university. I truly sense that Liberty wants what is best for its students both inside and outside of the classroom. In short, Liberty is my dream school because of its heart. The Honors Program at Liberty furthers my respect for Liberty by challenging its students and providing them with opportunities to succeed. Being accepted into the Liberty Honors Program would mean many things to me including preparing me for my future and giving me the chance to become a Champion for Christ. It would challenge and provide me with a close-knit Christian community, new growth opportunities, and a balance amidst the wide variety of new experiences. Being accepted into the Honors Program would further enable me to pursue and fulfill God’s purpose for my life.
I have participated in the school’s marching band for four years has a member of the color guard. The last two years I have even earned a leadership position. From being in marching band, I have learned the ability to look for a bigger picture in things. For instance, something that may not seem clear now may take a true shape in time. I have also gained working experience through my two lifeguarding jobs from the last three years. I have learned how “size up” a situation and see how to properly deal with a problem. I have also learned, through both commitments, how to time manage myself and both achieve in activity/work and in school. I believe that through these experiences, I can bring a different perspective to the Honors Program’s community and help better it in any way possible.
Don't get me wrong; my parents never mandated that I take all the honors classes I could gain admission to. No one told me to take three honors classes. No one, that is, except the little voice in my head that convinced me scholarly success was based upon the number of "H's" on my high-school transcript. The counselors cautioned me not to do it, students who had fallen into the trap before warned me against it and my parents just left it up to me. Through it all, I just smiled and reassured them, "Don't worry; I can handle it." The trouble was, I didn't have the slightest idea what lay ahead.
Becoming the person I am today wasn't easy especially because I was never like this, I was usually that kid who sat by themselves would not socialize and avoid everyone. Because from elementary school all the way till 8th grade I was bullied by people who just wanted to bother me for the heck of it. I can’t explain that inner feeling from inside when you hear people say horrible stuff to you. To me this famous quote “stick and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”, was a lie and it did hurt. One spring evening after a difficult day of school in elementary school, I was chased home by a group of kids that have been pushing me around, name calling, taking my stuff and humiliated me from the past months. I never grew the strength to stand up to those people because I was afraid of them hitting me afraid if they will spread rumors. Thank god when I graduated 5th grade I thought finally i will leave and never see those idiots ever in my life sadly when I entered middle school some of those kids entered the same school I was in and it kept on the harassment the name call...
