Hockey vs. Football
Football and hockey are two sports, which are similar in objective, but very different in their rules and guidelines. In each of these major sports there are rules and guidelines that the players must follow. The topics that will be covered are the weight differences between the players in football and hockey, the use of Creatine Monohydrate, and last the equipment restrictions.
This first paragraph will discuss the weight difference between the players in the NFL (football) and the NHL (hockey). Although there is no written rule as to how much a player can weigh in either of the sports, there is the unwritten rule that the players and coaches follow. The average hockey player weighs about 185 pounds. The average weight of a full NHL hockey team consisting of 24 players is about 4,500 lbs. Coaches in the NHL do not want their players too weigh more than 200 though because as Mike Milbury the coach of the New York Islanders put it “ when a player is as big as a football player (approx. 250 lbs.). It is harder for a player to move quickly and elude an upcoming check”. In the NFL, it is the opposite of the NHL. The coaches don’t want their players too weigh less than 200 pounds. The Punter/Kicker is the only position that it doesn’t really matter what the weight of player is. On average the weight of a NFL player is 250 lbs. The average team consisting of 48 players weighs about 12,000 lbs.

Lemieux was six feet four inches and 235 lbs. Gretzky was six foot even and 185 lbs. Hockey is a contact sport more physical size can be an advantage for out muscling an opponent for position or even intimidation of smaller players. Bigger forwards are usually called power forwards in hockey and are expected to be stronger and use their size to their advantage and be in close proximity to the net which gives them better chances at scoring points. The power forward position was the style Mario Lemieux played. The sport also requires a fair amount of speed so being smaller can be an advantage as far as being quicker than a bigger opponent. These players are usually labeled as finesse players and are found further away from the net and are able to shoot better so they can make up for the lack of proximity to the net. These players usually have more skill as far as shooting and passing ability. Wayne Gretzky falls into the finesse style and was an excellent passer. Even with their different play styles and physical attributes some of the statistics they managed to put up are nothing short of
Thesis: Although most hockey athletes believe that by wearing required equipment keeps them safe from injury, however I believe that these regulations should be stricter because of the severity of recent and past injuries.
First, in the USA Hockey league, which is the non-professional, non-collegiate, levels, the “golden” rules of hockey have been passed down from the very beginning, as well as in the NHL. For example, one golden rule is that the game is played with a black puck made from vulcanized rubber, and you have two goals, which is a golden rule that is passed down to every hockey game everywhere. Another golden rule that is the same for both leagues is that there is always going to be body contact. Without body contact in the game of hockey, it would be like playing tennis. Golden rules, more so, common sense rules/ethics have been passed down from the very beginning of hockey in 1875. Now, though, USA Hockey and the NHL have differing rules from each other. For example, in icing situations, or where an attacking...
Are young children putting their health and even their lives at risk if they partake in the sport of football? Some claim that the American sport is far too dangerous and the risk of concussions and injuries far outway the pros of the physical sport, while others insist that technological improvements and new regulations have made the sport safer. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history and education at New York University, argues in his paper, “We Must Stop Risking the Health of Young Football Players,” that football is a sport that is too dangerous for the youth. He states his belief that technological improvements in helmets and changes in the rules of the sport have had little effect on reducing injuries and that nothing has worked.

While in college, football players live like normal college students. Most college athletes are rewarded scholarships for playing sports. This doesn’t make them different from other students though. They go to class, and live like every other college student on campus. This differs very much from life in the NFL. While in the NFL players make millions of dollars, and become celebrities. Unlike college football players, NFL players don’t live like regular people. They usually live in mansions, and have an abundance of riches. Because of this, it is easier for fans to relate to college football players.

Throughout the years, many sports have evolved from that of their beginning. Be it through rule changes, advances in the way people watch the game, advances in how they play the game, but this biggest one of all is the change in equipment. This is most commonly seen and heard about in American football. Due to all of the advances in the medical field and seeing the sports injuries that occur. Football had to adapt and change to the new standards of safety for the players with new and improved equipment to lessen the chance of long term damage.
Youth Hockey Growth in the United States is the main focus of this research. The sport of hockey has been around for nearly 200 years. The game was produced from a form of stick and ball games started by immigrants. These immigrants were British soldiers who brought their type of hockey to Canada. Paintings from the 1830’s depict the sport of ice-hockey taking off in Canada.(Garth, Vaughan) As the sport grew so did the age groups in which it was played. Many sports start their growth from the elders down to the youth. The same can be said for ice-hockey. Many gentlemen started to play the sport as a way to pass the time. This is when the children began to take a liking to the sport. Fathers began to teach their children the fundamentals and from there, the rest is history.
Hockey and its modern roots date back to the late nineteenth century. Interestingly, one of the considered fathers of hockey, Lord Stanley, came to Canada and showed great interest in the amazing sport. He then donated a steel mug of his to the sport which was to become The Stanley Cup. It is the oldest trophy in all of sports. Hockey is the sport of all sports and there is not a quality of another sport one will not find in hockey. If so, it would be a more boring version of something similar that hockey already has to offer. For example, in Golf there is the putt and in Hockey there is the slap shot.
First of all, the rules of football require one to equip himself with approximately twenty pounds of equipment, including a helmet, shoulder pads, and girdle pads. This is because football has the most contact involved out of all sports. In a football game, the norm is that the home team wears colorful jerseys and the visiting team wears white jerseys. Moreover, if a team’s offense is on the field, their defense is on the sideline. A team’s offense includes a center, who snaps the ball to the quarterback. The “QB” then has a choice to run with the ball, hand it off to a running back, or throw it to a wide receiver. The quarterback has an offensive line to protect him from the assailing defense. If a teammate happens to score a touchdown, he earns his team six points, which allows for the kicker to kick an extra point, and give his team a total of seven points. However, if the offense fails to travel at least ten yards within four attempts, or “downs,” they have the opti...
Since the ANOVA revealed a significant difference between sports, an analysis needed to be accomplished to see what specific groups were different from one another. In an effort to determine which sports were significantly different from one another, a post-hoc analysis was applied using the least significant differences (LSD) comparison Table 10 list the relationships between individual sports as they relate to changes in GPA. Students partaking in boys’ basketball had lesser improvements in GPA than did students participating in football and outdoor track. Boys partaking in male outdoor track had better academic increases than boys take part in basketball and football. The academic achievements of football were fewer than that of male
The training and practices required to play professional football are intense. You have to wear uncomfortable pads and helmets and endure grueling practices in the heat of the summer and you have to lift weights every day (Green 174). You have to train no matter what position you play. What’s important about is how the position works and how it contributes to the game. Young boys must join high school football team, the road to football star begins in high school.
