This paper will explore all the aspects of the literary movement first present in the 19th century, existentialism. It will discuss the different climates, including social, political, and economic, that the literary movement was present during. Combining the basic dictionary definition and the numerous interpretations writers grasp from existentialism, the information provided will deepen the understanding of the origins, popularity, and breadth of the topic. Touching upon the works of famous existentialistic writers, including Jean-Paul Sartre, Franz Kafka, Luigi Pirandello, and Albert Camus, this paper will cover the whole existentialism period.
To doubt the idea that existentialism has affected the way society thinks, the way people perceive others, and, most importantly, the way people define their own beings is absurd. It is quite evident that this philosophy has shaped the world, and in turn, transformed the climate into an introspective one. According to Merriam Webster’s (2011) dictionary, existentialism is defined as "a chiefly 20th century philosophical movement embracing diverse doctrines but centering on analysis of individual existence in an unfathomable universe and the plight of the individual who must assume ultimate responsibility for acts of free will without any certain knowledge of what is right or wrong or good or bad." Basic definition, however, will not suffice the task of truly understanding this movement and, therefore, an analysis of existentialism will help to reveal the different aspects of this noted literary movement.

Such literary masterminds as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Franz Kafka, Ralph Ellison, Luigi Pirandello, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky have fallen under the label of existentialistic writers, though several writers refrain from conforming to the title. Therefore, as to correspond to the variance of people who may or may not call themselves existentialists, but in fact are, existentialism can be found in not just fictional novels, but also in analytical papers, memoirs, and nonfictional pieces. Works produced, from Camus’ The Stranger to Sartre’s essay entitled “Truth and Existence”, embodied the existentialism movement and covered all of the complexities of the period.
Ultimately, existentialism was an important movement in the 20th century and was the base for a transformation for the entire world.

Existentialism is the epitome of the unknown. There is no straightforward explanation of what exactly it is, there is only certain characteristics and behaviors that describe existentialist views. Throughout today’s world, there are examples of it everywhere, it’s found in movies, books, songs, and just people in general. Existentialists are known to think and do for themselves only. They believe that to understand what it means to be human requires understanding of themselves first. Some very well known pieces of entertainment existentialism is found in are: Hamlet by William Shakespeare, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The Stranger by Albert Camus, and The Breakfast Club by John Hughes. The Stranger is a book written about a young man whose mother dies, which soon leads him to becoming acquainted with the feeling of not caring about what his actions do to others or himself. The main character Meursault starts helping his friend Raymond, carry out ways to torment his mistress. Out of nowhere while at the beach, Meursault shoots Raymond’s mistress’s brother. He is thrown into jail and tried, but he seems to not be affected as much as he should about his actions. He first finds it hard to live without cigarettes, women, and nature, but he soon finds out he doesn’t need any of those. After being sentenced to death, he is suggested to turn away from his atheism but later realizes that human existence has no greater meaning. This realization and acceptance is what truly makes him happy (Camus). Existential works are difficult to describe because the definition of existentialism covers a wide range of ideas and influences almost to the point of ambiguity. An easy, if not basic, approach to existentialism is to view it as a culmination of attitudes from the oppressed people of industrialization, writers and philosophers during the modern literary period, and people who were personally involved as civilians, soldiers, or rebels during WWII and witnessed the worst aspects of life and war. These attitudes combined the aspects of loss of identity and autonomy, the uselessness of pain, a sense of alienation, and the meaninglessness of a harsh life where death is the only way out; all of these things helped give birth to a new philosophy that for the first time dealt with the cold reality of life after WWII. The canon of existential literature almost singularly deals with native authors from France, Germany, Russia, and the former Czechoslovakia; however, there has yet to be a universally accepted Irish writer to belong to this category. Some argue that this segregation of Irish writers has to do with Ireland’s geographical location and its neutrality during WWII; however, if existentialism is purely an amalgamation of attitudes, then a country’s location and direct political policy play a meager role in the classification of a work as existential. Moreover, those arguments pay no attention to expatriates, or the simultaneously related socio-political condition of other countries; thus, a reevaluation of the canon, or at least a reconsideration of Irish works as existential is appropriate.
