I first started orchestra when I was 9 years old as part of the 4th grade strings program at Canterbury Woods Elementary School. I decided to join orchestra largely in part due to my older brother, who had also started orchestra in 4th grade and had continued all the way through high school and into college. He was always saying how much fun orchestra was and my parents told stories of all the fun things he did in orchestra. Therefore, I decided to follow in my brother’s footsteps and play the violin. I don’t really remember much about my orchestra years in elementary school. I know there were two teacher, Mrs. Graham-Bell, who taught the violins, and Mrs. D, who taught the violas, cellos, and bass. I didn’t particularly like Mrs. Graham-Bell; …show more content…
However, I decided to use my one elective space to take orchestra because of the fun experience I had had in middle school. The inclusion of trips and increasingly difficult music is part of what made it so fun. Additionally, most of the stories that my brother told me about orchestra had taken place while in high school, so I felt that high school would be the best years to take orchestra. I have never regretted my decision to take high school in orchestra and I know I never will. I have so many memories about orchestra in high school that I would never be able to explain them all. One of the highlights from my freshman year was Solo & Ensemble because I actually performed a piece with my sister, who had just started orchestra in elementary school. Even though my sister didn’t like to practice and we only got an excellent, it was a lot of fun to play with my sister. Another highlight also happens to be one of my favorite memories in orchestra and that was the spring trip to Cincinnati, Ohio. Everything about the trip was lots of fun, except for sharing a bed with Jane because she hogged the blankets all night. Our first night, we ate at an interesting chili place, called Skyline Chili. That became a running joke for the remainder of the trip. We also went on a ghost tour around the city, which I found really interesting, even though Casey was a bit freaked out. The next night, we saw a performance at the Cincinnati Music Hall and, after the performance as we were waiting to meet the singer, Lea Salonga, I went ghost hunting with Long, Calvin, Olivia, and Mikala. We had learned that the building was supposedly haunted the previous night during our ghost tour and that night, we actually saw a ghost! Long recorded it on his camera, so we have proof that ghosts exist. This trip also housed one of the funniest orchestra
Elana Sanguigni April 18, 2016 Honors Music Term Paper. The Wind Ensemble and Concert Band reflect a rich history. The formation of the Concert and Wind Ensemble bands dates back to the Middle Ages and Medieval Times. The first time I picked up an instrument was at the age of 7 when I was in third grade. You can call it fate, luck, or my destiny but I was one of the three students that was able to join my elementary orchestra. Of course like any kid, I was afraid if had the ability to do such a thing. I mean it’s not every day you’re recruiting into the arts. I kept asking myself “can I do this? Will I fit in this group?” in other words can I be part of the classical music culture? It wasn’t till my first school concert where I had my first solo of “My Heart Will Go On” the love theme from Titanic that I was able to express the countless hours put into a 15 second solo. After that experience I never questioned if I belonged to the culture. Instead I focused on the next story I would tell on stage with the music score in
Music is virtually everywhere we go, no matter if it is background noise in a coffee shop or singing along while shopping for groceries, we can find music somewhere. The event I attended was the Flint Symphony Orchestra on October 8, 2016. I have never attended a symphony before so I was excited to go, especially since I had invited my friend to attend with me. For this event, I was already informed by my teacher that the symphony will be formal so we needed to look the part since others will be dressed fancy. This made me curious how this event will turn out. Walking past the ticket area and through the doors to the lobby made me feel instantly memorized at how grand it was on the inside. I went downstairs and there were a vast
My current private teacher, Gayle, has gotten me into the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, directed by Liza Grossman, The North East Ohio Regional Orchestra, gig’s with the Cleveland Pops orchestra, and so many other opportunities. Gayle not only is going to prepare me for college auditions, but is going to be one of my biggest support systems throughout my long college application journey. Gayle Klaber, is one of the most premier cellists in Ohio (playing with the Cleveland Pops, The Blue Water Chamber Orchestra, The Firelands Symphony). She has taught me to play more confidently as a musician, by improving my technique and my balance as both a person and a musician. Being principal cellist in the “advanced” group at my high school for both my junior and senior year taught me how to lead a section.
The music was emotional and captivating in the beginning, I was just staring at the stage for the hour that they were performing part I that was based on the mass part.
I have played an intrinsic role in my school’s band and orchestra department through helping organizing performances, teaching classes, and tutoring individuals. On a regular basis, I am responsible for directing and teaching classes including beginning band, with grades ranging from fourth to twelfth, and more advanced ensembles like concert band and marching band. I also play an important role in their performances sometimes by directing and other times by contacting venues to organize dates and times for the shows. I also dedicate time during the week to help beginning players
at this time had no valves and so could only play a limited series of

Throughout history music has had a profound effect on a person’s mind, body, and consciousness. A song or piece of music can trigger vivid memories, and induce emotions ranging from deep sorrow to unabashed joy. Music can drive listeners to patriotic fervor or religious frenzy, or it can soothe the savage beast we call human. There have been many advances in technology that have let us study how music affects the brain. Music causes all sorts of activity in the brain, especially during musical improvisation. Music can tremendously help people with certain mind damaging diseases, and in some cases it can have negative effects.
When explaining band and orchestra, they can be further broken down into different groups. Orchestra can be further broken down into string orchestra and symphony orchestra while the band can be broken down into jazz band and rock band. These classifications separate musicians into different musical groups depending what type of music and instruments they play, Children are given the opportunity to play an instrument starting their fifth-grade year. Many kids, however, do not know whether they want to play a wind or percussion instrument for band or a string instrument for orchestra. Band and orchestra groups are both ensembles of musicians that play music in concerts and events. Although similar in their goal to achieve tonal balance and range,
On Monday, the 29th of February, I went to my 6th grade daughter’s orchestra concert. It was the Region 3 Orchestra Festival and included 5th grade, 6th grade, junior high, and high school orchestras. It was held in the Puyallup High school gymnasium, beginning at 7pm.

For me personally, music appreciation is defined as looking at different pieces of music and musical forms, and learning to find appreciation for them. This appreciation is formed not only by listening to several pieces of music, but by learning to understand what you may be listening too. This involves introducing yourself to many pieces of music and learning to interpret, what makes each piece different and unique. Understanding the historical background and societal changes that have taken place during the creation of the musical piece, is also an important factor to consider. Music is not only creative, but it also makes up part of a societies history. Music is an art form that connects different societies and cultures together, it possess the amazing ability to make us into one.
However I did not have a big problem being in that class, the only issue was there were no instrument like a keyboard piano. The instrument that I picked was the brass flute since it looked easy to learn. As I continued to practice playing the flute in my Beginning Band class and rehearse after school, I mastered to which keys to press and how to blow properly in the riser. To be able to play at a slow tempo, regular tempo, and swift tempo. As matter of fact, I also learned to work well and play all together with my classmates and my flute partner, Robbie Lee. From being in this class, My Beginning Band has taught me skills of playing an instrument besides a keyboard piano and gave me more knowledge about music. Somehow being in that class, it inspired me to teach myself to sing well and show people that I do not just draw, but that I know how to sing and
