When explaining band and orchestra, they can be further broken down into different groups. Orchestra can be further broken down into string orchestra and symphony orchestra while the band can be broken down into jazz band and rock band. These classifications separate musicians into different musical groups depending what type of music and instruments they play, Children are given the opportunity to play an instrument starting their fifth-grade year. Many kids, however, do not know whether they want to play a wind or percussion instrument for band or a string instrument for orchestra. When looking from left to right through the conductor’s view, they go from high-pitched to low-pitched instruments. The lows would play the lolling notes while the highs would play rich, trilling melodies. Similar to choir groups, they have basses, tenors, altos, and sopranos. The orchestra and band divide the instruments in a certain spot in the ensemble to achieve an effective sound. The band under these circumstances, have its sopranos on the left side of the conductor. The trumpets and flutes, the highest ranged instruments, are situated there. Then there are the altos in the middle such as the alto saxophones, French horns, and clarinets. Next are the tenors which would be baritones, bassoons, and tenor saxophones. And lastly, there are the basses, which are the trombones, tubas, and baritone saxophones. Band is family. When your student walks onto campus, he or she is instantly adopted into the strongest society on campus. They will be spending their school days among the top achievers on campus, with fellow students who look out for one another and steer each other away from trouble instead of towards it. Teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers watch over all the kids as if they were their own.
Large bands, full of unique instruments and amateur musicians, were required to play at festivals and ceremonies. Similar to the evolution of the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Band is derived from military purposes. Instruments, such as the trumpets, horns, and drums, were often used for signaling. In contrast to Wind Ensemble musicians, these Concert Band musicians never played their instruments for military enjoyment.
In the woodwind family, the piccolo and the bassoon are being played. In the brass family, the French horn and the trombones are being played. In the percussion family the bass drum, triangle and the cymbals are being played. Lastly, in the string family, violas and cellos were being played throughout the 4th movement of Ode to joy. Music is virtually everywhere we go, no matter if it is background noise in a coffee shop or singing along while shopping for groceries, we can find music somewhere. The event I attended was the Flint Symphony Orchestra on October 8, 2016. I have never attended a symphony before so I was excited to go, especially since I had invited my friend to attend with me. For this event, I was already informed by my teacher that the symphony will be formal so we needed to look the part since others will be dressed fancy. For Stanislaus State Wind Ensemble the type of ensembles that were playing were brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. The instruments that I heard and saw included the flute, trombone, French horn, piccolo, tube, trumpet, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, a bass, and the drums. At this concert there was no singing, only instruments; and in total there were eight songs that were performed.
On December 7, I had the honor of attending a very popular Dallas Symphony Orchestra Concert. It was the first formal concert I have been to since I was in middle school (excluding the school concerts). Despite playing a woodwind instrument myself, I decided to see the DSO’s Organ and Brass Concert, curious to hear how instruments traditionally assigned bass or harmony parts would step up to play treble and melody parts. When I sat down close to the front stage, where all the brass players and percussionists sat (or stood), I expected mostly trumpet sounds and lots of sound from melody percussion instruments. People have dreams of what they want to do or accomplish in life, but usually musical theatre is just pushed into the non-realistic void. It isn’t a dream for me. In the past four years, musical theatre has been clarified as my reality. Musical theatre has been the only thing I have seen myself wanting to do. My first love was The Phantom of the Opera, seeing how I watched it almost every day and it was one of the first shows I saw. Of course, I started doing all of those cute shows in middle school and making a huge deal about it to my family and friends, but I have never felt so passionate about something. I have been a member of marching band ever since I was in eighth grade. Marching, and music itself, was almost part of my DNA, with my entire family having been involved in musical organizations before me. My journey into the world of marching band began as a timid, reserved, and anxiety-filled girl who did not know anybody else involved in the organization. Marching band is a very broad field to participate in. High school and college band both have specific criteria they have to meet during marching season. But what are the differences and likenesses between high school and college band? In high school band, there is one show to perform and there are many long, grueling hours spent perfecting and fine tuning it. The show is not only for halftime spectating at football games, but also band festival and regional contests. High school band has a more stern outlook because the entire season is spent working for placement, whether it be superior or not. Jazz is a music genre that is very rich in culture which is why I decided to attend a Jazz concert. This was my first Jazz event I had ever been to. I went to see the band The Chairman and the Board. This was a blues swing band. Having been to other concerts, I was expecting something similar as far as atmosphere and crowd. I was proved very wrong as this concert defied all my expectations and was in a whole different field as far as life entertainment goes. The first thing I noticed right off the bat was the audience. The age range of this audience was mainly 40-70. I definitely felt like the odd man out when I was there. It did get me thinking though, why was this audience so much older? Personal Narrative- Marching Band Competition This season was only the second year that I had been in marching band, even though we did do parades in middle school. The year before, I was selected to be drum major of the upcoming marching season. I was excited to meet the challenge of getting back to the state championships. It was also nerve-racking because I felt if we didn't make it to state, it would be my fault.
The orchestra was well amplified throughout the Lincoln Center Opera House because it was clearly heard from our upper mezzanine seating. Sunken down below in front of the stage is where I found the opera orchestra. The opera orchestra, which is quite similar to a full symphony orchestra, was starting to warm-up as I entered the "jewelry box". In the orchestra pit I found aerophones, which included, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, trombones, as well as a flute, piccolo, english horn, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, bass trombone, and a tuba; chordophones, which included the first and second violins, violas, cellos, and a harp; membranophones were made up of the percussion and a timpani.
