I didn’t exactly come from an upper class family, I wouldn’t even call it a middle class family. The clothes i got were just hand-me-downs from my older brother, usually shoes with holes in them or a faded jacket with torn sleeves. Often times I had to scrounge up money just to buy a school lunch. My family and I would stay in town for several months at a time before moving to a new one. I had learned quickly not to make any new friends because it would only hurt when I left in the end. This got especially hard on a nine year old. With this in mind, I would just ghost through the days and schools without talking to anyone and accepting no help from them. This got me criticized by the other students, but there was one particular school where things got especially bad. …show more content…
Walking around, I stuck out like a sore thumb and got a lot of hate for how I looked. One day I had scavenged enough money to buy a school lunch for myself. Heading over to my corner seat in the cafeteria, a kid named Milt approached me with his gang of about six friends. They stopped me in the middle of the cafeteria and asked where I was going. I really didn’t want trouble so I tried stepping around them, but in return I got pushed back. He then began a barrage of insults on how peasants were not allowed to eat with kings. Before I could respond, Milt whacked the tray out of my hands and pointed to the door telling me to get my pig family out of Eagle Mount before we ruined their town. After insulting my family and ruining a lunch I worked hard for, I got pretty heated. After a moment of silence I put my hands in my pockets and told him to meet me in an empty lot across from the front of the school. Little did I know, I was being
In Ted Talk, according to Ann Cooper, we have to change school lunches and educate children about a food by creating farming class, so they can verify what foods are benefit for themselves, and they are able to avoid unhealthy foods. There are two types of foods: healthy foods and unhealthy foods. Healthy foods equal to organic foods which are fresh as an element of healthy foods. In contrast, unhealthy foods equal to processed foods that contain chemicals. The USDA allows all of processed foods that are harmful to our children. According to the USDA, the USDA stands for United States Department of Agriculture that controls our food system. Cooper stated that we have to be ashamed for our food system as the richest country. The U.S. spends
Imagine that you walk into a cafeteria and you see children in line to buy lunch. The lunch is burnt and cold. You see the kids who bought lunch sit down and start asking people for food, they say no. At the end of the lunch period the kids lunch trays still have all the food on them. The children are starving and a lot of food was wasted. You don’t want that right? I believe that our school should get a new lunch menu because many students do not like the food served, there are not many options, and there are many problems with the food.
“Our Schools need to start teaching kids how to be healthy.”- Unknown. School lunches have created a chronic problem in a school setting, and since it hasn't been fixed, 6-11 year olds have had a 17% increased chance of becoming obese (Centers for Disease control and Prevention). Most school districts don't even bother changing the food restrictions just so they can please their students. Unhealthy school lunches are a huge problem among children in the United States, it can cause obesity, stress, and many other problems.
“More than a third of the county's children are overweight or obese.”(Gustin, 1). As shocking as this is, it's true. One of the big reasons that children and teens are overweight is because of the foods that they eat. They are fed these fattening and unhealthy foods by the school system. Their futures can be changed if we change our choices. Having more nutritious lunches can have a positive impact on the health of American teens.
healthy than what is served at school. Alisha Farris describes in her article "What gets packed in a lunchbox can be just as unhealthy as what 's served at the cafeteria" a study conducted that compared student 's lunches from home with what is served at school. In the study, the conductors looked through 1,300 school and parent-packed lunches of pre-k and kindergarten students in three Virginia schools. They found that packed lunches contained more calories, fat, carbohydrates, sugar, vitamin C and iron. These lunches contained less protein, sodium, fiber, and other essential nutrients compared to the National School Lunch Program meals. Sixty-one percent of lunches from home also had deserts while school lunches had none. Snacks such as chips
President Harry Truman initiated The School Lunch Program (NSLP) in 1946, it was established under the National School Lunch Act. The program provides nutritionally balanced, low‐cost lunches to more than 32 million boys and girls each school day.The NSLP ensures the nutrition, portion, and safety of our children food, over the years do to the rise of childhood obesity the The USDA School Lunch Program is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our youth. Many concerned citizens, such as Eric schlosser author of Fast Food Nation believes that the USDA is not providing our children with the right nourishment. Many parents are taking it into their own hand and creating and joining advocacy groups. It is crucial that our youth receive nutrient
4 out of every 5 schools in the United States do not meet the current USDA standards in place for the fat composition that is included in the student lunches.(Vittana) Even though the country is trying to get students healthy lunches, not all are meeting the criteria for school lunches. But that is because not all schools can afford having to buy fresh food. All schools should meet the standard so schools should try to make their lunches as healthy as possible.
Thirty one million kids nationwide eat school sponsored meals twice a day for a hundred eighty days and on average for twelve years. In this sense school lunches are an important and critical component of childhood nutrition and development. Yet these meals are highly processed and filled with chemicals and preservatives. School lunch rooms are essentially fast food restaurants; they unload shipments of frozen food then heat it up in glorified microwaves and serve it hot and ready. This is the same basic principle of fast food restaurants and people all know how terribly unhealthy fast food is for them. Still America feeds this toxic material to kids every day. This has been a tremendous issue for years but it is more devastating now than ever before.
When the United Sates federal government set new regulations on what schools had to provide for lunch for their students, a lot of people weren’t pleased with what was happening. Especially when students started complaining of hunger after having had their school provided lunch. With the new regulations, the price of lunches went up. The new rules made eating lunch from school more expensive and it made it clear that most students, especially elementary, won’t or refuse to eat the healthier foods. Obviously, the school systems were going to need to find a way to ease their students into eating the healthier foods that they now needed to offer. The federal government used Michele Obama to promote eating healthier and getting active, but the program for healthier school lunches was called a failure after some time. There are so many things that people could say about the new rules regarding school lunches, but all of those things would result in nothing. When our government set these rules on school lunches, there was no fighting what was currently happening and no going back on what we were accustomed to.
For the past 22 years the public school system has been serving unhealthy foods to kids. In the school system kids need to have the opportunity to choose between what they want to eat. People know that fast food is unhealthy but people buy it because of its taste and price. Having McDonalds or taco bell in public schools will increase the healthy problem in the state of Georgia also the death rate of children. School lunches are causing the student to not eat lunch and starve throughout the day.
Outside of school kids don’t get enough proper nutrition. Everyday in the United States there are approximately 12 million children who receive a free or reduced price lunch because their families may need government help. Besides the fact that many students rely on school lunches for their daily meals, the healthier school food that schools provide is a benefit for the children because it can prevent childhood obesity as well as improve the child's academic performance. There are many kids who rely on school lunches to provide them not only enough food but healthy and nutritious foods for their health. Underprivileged families can not afford food for every single meal at times so these school meals are important for them. There is nearly 4
The students of our school should rally together and hang the cooks in the Cafeteria. Well, maybe that is a little too dramatic, but something has to be done about the school lunch. The stuff that they serve the students is truly awful. Students should not be forced to eat in the cafeteria because the meals are not prepared well, there are foreign objects in the deserts, and many kids have gotten ill after eating certain items.
From low test scores and bad lunches national and local groups have set a new standard in the school cafeterias for the students to eat healthy foods and staying active to benefit their body throughout school and outside of school. With these goals set it will make a difference in the students and the school. Throughout my research I have found out how healthy lunches are very beneficial to our bodies and to our brains during a long school day and also outside of school. I’ve learned that eating healthy will limit our hunger during the day and that it will also help your brain work faster during test causing school scores to rise. Also, these standards have lowered the percentage of child obesity.
We have so many things for our elementary students, but what about our junior highers? Our elementary students have many options to play, have there own area they want to sit at during lunch. Us junior highers don’t have as many choices because we come out later in the day for recess. Us junior highers and I would like more things to have to ourselves. This would make us have a better junior high. Options for a better Junior High recreation area are a Food Cart, Junior High playground, and a private lunch area.
How unhealthy are school meals? Why do people want healthier school lunches? Many students don’t believe the healthier lunch options are really that much better for you, and because some schools can’t afford the healthier lunch choices, people are beginning to think school lunches are just fine. In fact, most people wouldn’t change a thing about them. Although junk food is quick and cheap, schools should make every effort to increase the amount of healthy foods and to decrease the amount of junk food because healthy foods are more nutritious and energy-rich so you can stay focused in class, many Americans are obese and the rate of obesity is growing, and junk food leads to other physical and emotional problems.
