Hidden Bias Test Results The hidden bias test by Project Implicit was interesting method of determining hidden biases. A hidden bias is, “Biases thought to be absent or extinguished remain as "mental residue" in most of us.”(Teaching Tolerance, 2014). Studies have shown a link between biases and behavior and biases can be revealed through an individual’s actions. If biases are revealed through actions then they must be learned. Teaching Tolerance indicates, “Bias is perpetuated by conformity with in-group attitudes and socialization by the culture at large.” (Teaching Tolerance, 2014). This perspective supports the belief which biases are learned and never forgotten and reestablished through behavior. My perception of biases is they are formed through experiences not group conformity. Culture is important influence in forming biases, yet biases can change. According to Teaching Tolerance, even if a bias still changes it lingers in the unconscious. An interesting perspective, biases continue to stay with each of us even if we think it is hidden. My result is your data suggest a strong automatic preference for straight people compared to gay people. The result for this test was interesting because I never thought about a preference, previously. The test explanation indicates, “If you responded faster when Straight people and Good words were classified with the same key than when Gay people and Good words were classified with the same key.” (Teaching Tolerance, 2014) I found the association with good words and straight people or good words and gay people interesting correlation to locate hidden biases in this area. I interpreted the test result as no association between certain words and gay or straight. The interesting aspect is the automatic preference. The result indicates I have a hidden bias toward gay

After reading See No Bias by Shankar Vedantam I have learned that many people are unaware their biases. Mahzarin Banaji took a bias test, now known as the Implicit Association Test and her results stated she had a biased for whites over blacks. She didn’t understand her results because she is a minority too. She did an experiment where she had people picking from a list of unknown names. “The experiment showed how subtle cues can cause errors without people 's awareness.” Millions of people have taking the bias test and large majorities of people showed biases, even if they said they had no biases. The first Implicit Association Test (IAT) that I took was whether I had a preference for Young people compared to Old people. I chose this IAT because I initially thought that I would have no preference for Young or Old people. Though, I knew I would have some mistakes, I still expected my results to have an equal preference for both young or old people. In addition, this IAT used four categories. The first two categories were images of either a Young or and Old face and the other two categories were the words good or bad. The good or bad categories has at least five words listed.

The test that I took before was the Gender-Career IAT test. I will describe the feedbacks and give some of my opinions regarding the test in this essay. Before I began the test, I believed that I would have a negative response toward the female sexual orientation. When I initially finished the Gender-Career IAT test, I definitely knew my score results. I had the "stereotype in my mind" that men would be more "profession minded" and ladies were all the more "family situated". In the articles “Implicit racial bias often begins as early as preschool, a study finds” and “Research suggests the gender gap in math starts as early as kindergarten”. The central idea in the two articles are that girls and black students are treated unfairly. There are similarities and in how they develop the idea of how some students are discriminated against. However there are many differences in how they develop the central idea. There are studies that back up both accusations of black students and girls being treated differently in the classroom.
Prior to taking the Implicit Association Test, I did not feel that I had many biases. I am an open minded person and have a live and let live general attitude towards life. I reviewed the topic options and chose Gender-Career as my topic. As I suspected the results were that I had little to no automatic association between female and male with career and family. Feeling pretty confident in my belief that I am a progressive woman, I decided to continue on to other topics on the list. The next topic that I selected was Sexuality. The results were not what I expected. I align myself in favor of equal rights for gay people, I voted to legalize gay marriage but my unconscious bias towards gay people opposes my stated opinions. Growing up in a very accepting and forward home, I always found myself to be free of most bias. Having been the target of some racial prejudice in the past, I always told myself that I would make sure nobody else had to feel the same way. While this may be a great way to think, it really only covers the fact that you will not have any explicit bias. What I have realized during the course of this class is that implicit bias often has a much stronger effect on us than we might think, and even the most conscious people can be affected.
Recent research on the interaction of gender, ethnicity, and identity has shown that every culture have had some effect on children’s and their awareness of gender bias. For example, studies has shown that eleven and twelve year old girls are more than likely to believe that they are targets of gender bias than boys, while on the other hand, boys are not as concerned with gender bias or stereotypes as girls seem to be and are usually unaware of it’s concept (Brown, Bigler & Chu,2010).

Stereotypes are influence by the prejudice or “evaluation and/or feelings towards a group” (lecture, 6/3) that you hold, and they lead to discrimination, which is “differential treatement due to group membership” (lecture, 6/3). Although some stereotypes have been proven to be correct and positive, most are false and are extremely negative. Stereotypes are extremely hard to fight in our society because they can be both implicit and explicit. Explicit stereotypes are those that are more recent and controlled (lecture, 6/3). People who are openly racist towards African Americans have explicit stereotypes. Implicit stereotypes are those that are based off of emotion, early experience and emotion (lecture 6/3). These are especially tricky because we may not be completely aware that they exist in our minds, which means they are extra difficult to change. Stereotypes can also be dangerous because they affect the way we think and behave. For example, they affect our attributions or our “explanations for behavior” (lecture 10/15/14). There are many errors associated with attributions, the ultimate of these errors being stereotype driven attributions. This error involves being “particularly likely to ignore situational information when thinking about negative behaviors from outgroup members” (lecture 10/15/14).
