There has been many controversies in many patrol stations here at the Houston Police Department regarding a 10 hours shift called “power shift”. When I first start off my career as a patrolman, I had the opportunity to either choose an 8 hour or 10 hour shift. The difference between those two shifts are the days off. For instance, an officer who works an 8 hour shift will have a two days weekend, and officers who works a 10 hour shift will have a three day weekend. Some supervisors believe having power shifts is an advantage because it overlaps all three shifts (e.g. days, evenings, nights), in terms of relieving officers during shift change. Some officers hate getting dispatched to a late call especially when their shift ends in about 15 minutes. Power shift officers will pick up the slack and relief 8 hour shift officers so they can end their tour of duty. Power shifts will also save divisions money.
You are required to work a minimum of 50 hours in a week if you are in management and this is done on a tracking system. You are expected to work two night shifts in a week, weekends and every holiday excluding Thanksgiving,
Next, there are working hours to consider. The OCO tells that most welders work full-time. Many manufacturing firms have 2 or 3, 8 to 12 hour shifts each day to continue production around the clock if needed. As a result, welders may work evenings and weekends (The OCO). In addition, the working environment includes different variables.
Overall, 12 hours may seem long but it is relatively productive for a week. Nurses who work 12 hour shifts and being able to do something they like are more likely to want to work for 12 hours. They find it flexible and balance between work and families. It is a duty to the heart to help those in need if it requires more time. It is similar to anyone who really works hard to get better results. Nurses work hard to get to where they are now and therefore should have the right to choose 12 hour shifts. It is important for nurses to understand that all jobs have negative outcomes, but as long as they make the choice to maintain the level of their health and sleep by taking breaks and adequate exercise. They can further be energized in helping patients and finding work more effectively.
One legitimate concern is the possibility of losing uncertified staff members such as bus drivers or cafeteria employees. Critics claim that with the decreased schedule these faculty members will not receive the proper amount of payment to support themselves and or their families. However, this claim, no matter how convincing it may seem, is actually quite refutable. One solution to this problem could be that with the savings acquired from reduced bill costs and all other reduced costs, the uncertified staff could receive adequate payment through these savings. Due to the fact that the days are longer, the uncertified staff members could only miss at the most, one or two hours. As a result of this solution, there is no need to fear issues concerning money with the four-day

Shift Work: The introduction of shift work mainly depends on safety and productivity of the workers being maintained. However, evidence suggests that safety and productivity of workers may decline at night shifts with more hours on duty between breaks. The shift work system can be improved by introducing more rest breaks (Folkard & Tucker 2003).
Workaholics – people, who have a compulsive and unrelenting need to work (www.dictionary.com) – appear more and more among the working people of United States and other developed countries. At first glance, workaholics do not seem to be such a problem for industry and society as a whole. But in spite of all devotion to their work the workaholic will not be as valuable as a normal worker. Workaholics do not think about anything else except work that can cause severe health problems and can cause problems on their work. All that causes a reduction of economic profit for the company.
Faced with volatile fuel and energy prices and rising education costs, school districts across the country are considering ways in which to reduce their expenditures and increase efficient use of limited resources. The four-day school week has been proposed as one solution to address budget shortfalls. News reports indicate that districts in several states including New York, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Louisiana are considering such a shift in instructional time. Proponents argue that reducing the number of days students attend classes may yield savings in transportation, facilities, and personnel costs.
Going to a four day school week could cause many problems such as finances, more homework, and behaviors.
