The United States Department of Health and Human Resources developed a campaign called Healthy People 2020, to create awareness about different ways people can improve their health. “Healthy People provides science-based, national goals and objectives with 10-year targets designed to guide national health promotion and disease prevention efforts to improve the health of all people in the United States” (CDC, 2015). The overall goal is to improve the health of all people by providing better education, setting achievable goals, and tools. The Healthy 2020 also provides information about health issues and resources to address these issues. Individuals and organizations should take the lead in improving the health and decreasing health disparities …show more content…
in their communities. I did a research about our community to summarize the key indicators that I view as problems, and find ways to address these issues to improve the health of the individuals. I live in Melrose Park, Illinois, and the estimated population as of 2015 is 25,411.
More than half of the population is Hispanic of origin. 26.2% of individuals less than 65 years have no health insurance and 15.9% persons in poverty. Our community has a higher rate of individuals with no health insurance less than 65 years when I compared the statistics from our neighbor communities. Although the poverty rate of our community is lower than Maywood Park, I believe this issue needs to be addressed to improve access to health care and increase community-based resources. Out of 1,364 communities in Illinois, Melrose Park is ranked number 19 in Average Family size which is 4.11. I noticed that the number of fast food chains in our community is increasing that could also increase the rate of adult and childhood obesity. “Obesity affects our quality of life and is linked with increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and heart disease” (CCDPH, …show more content…
n.d). Based on my data and observations, the three key indicators that I view as a problem in our community are access to health services; proper nutrition, physical activity, and obesity; and lastly reproductive health services. People who live in poverty are more vulnerable and more likely needed assistance to access affordable health care. Individuals with no health insurance have poor access to health care and poor health outcomes. For this issue, my proposal is to increase community-based clinics that provide free health services and programs to underserved individuals. Health services that provide health education on health promotion to enhance the health status of individuals, improve health and quality of life, and reduce premature deaths. The second community problem is nutrition, obesity, and physical activity. Obesity will surpass the tobacco as the leading cause of death. My proposal to this issue is for nurses to provide effective health education to individuals in schools, work sites, clinics, communities, and hospitals. Nurses who are working at these areas play a major role in educating them on healthy living choices to prevent obesity. I believe that this strategy could increase the success of health promotion that allows individuals practice healthy habits in different areas in the community to decrease the rate of obesity. The third health issue that needs to be addressed is the reproductive health services, because of the alarming increase in the average family size of our community. Poverty could lead to a lack of adequate access to reproductive health services. My propose approach for this issue is to increase reproductive health education and reproductive health services to reduce teen pregnancy rate, improve adolescent sexual health, reduce the number of sexually transmitted diseases, and improve population control. The U.S Department of Health, local governments, schools, organizations involvement, is important in achieving the goals of Healthy People 2020. I believe that three community leaders that will support and help me achieve my proposed interventions would be Mayor Ronald Serpico; Veronica Bonilla-Lopez, District 89 Board of Education President; and Lori Price, President of Gottlieb Memorial Hospital. These leaders could health support and empower residents by giving knowledge on healthy choices, and offer opportunities to practice healthy lifestyle in different areas in the community. The Board of Education President could help encourage schools to provide healthy meals for children and provide enjoyable physical activities to keep them active and healthy. The Mayor plays a significant role in providing accessible health services for all residents in the community. Lastly, the President of the Hospital could help provide accessible health care and increase education on health promotion and disease prevention in the community. I hope that my proposed interventions would have positive consequences to help improve the health of all residents in the community.
First, I am hoping that to see more community health services that provide education and screenings in the community by 2017. Second, I am hoping that schools, home, and work sites will provide accessible healthy snacks and meals; and obesity rate will decrease by next year. Furthermore, worksites and the community will provide move programs and encourage residents to participate by summer of 2016. Third, parents will have increased resources and training to help them communicate effectively about sex by the next school year. Also, age-appropriate comprehensive reproductive health education will be provided in school and community-based clinics by next school
year. In conclusion, we must take of our health to improve and have a quality life. In today’s society, people seem to have inadequate knowledge about healthy lifestyle choices which lead to negative health consequences, poor health outcomes, and financial burden. As nurses, we play an important in achieving and implementing the goals of Healthy People 2020. We can make a change to keep our community healthy. I hope that my proposed interventions and goals could help the residents of my community, because I believe that health is our health.
The Healthy People 2020 (Healthy People 2020, 2014) is a nationwide program created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to achieve objectives for promoting health and preventing diseases. Faith based communities may benefit tremendously in including these objectives in program planning. The main goal is for the American people to have long, healthy lives. The Healthy People 2020 program provides measurable objectives that can be applied down to the local level such as in faith based communities. These guidelines encourage high quality of life by being healthy, disease-free, accessible healthcare, and have an environment that promotes good health and wellbeing in all age levels.
The health of the American people lags behind those from other developed countries. Federal public health agencies have a wide range of responsibilities and functions which includes public health research, funding, and oversight of direct healthcare providers. It has been a long time since changes have been made to the way the federal government structures its health care roles and programs outside of Medicare and Medicaid (Trust, 2013). With healthcare reform on the horizon now is the time to invest time and money in prevention, not medicine, making it a top priority to improve health and prevent disease. Funding efforts at all levels of the public health continuum need to focus on developing programs aimed at such leading initiatives as tobacco cessation, improving nutrition, supplying safe workplaces, and increasing physical activity in all ages of the population. People should have equal access to quality preventative medicine and education.

Healthy People are a nationwide program set by the United States Department of Health and Human Services with the objectives to promote health and prevent disease. The Healthy People program was first initiated in 1979, followed by Healthy People 1990, 2000 and 2010 with the same goals and objectives to promote health and prevent diseases. Due to the accomplishments that has been achieved in the previous years under this program, the Healthy People 2020 expanded or rather broadened their goals and objectives beyond disease prevention, health promotion and reducing health disparities, but to also eliminate healthcare disparities that has plagued this nation by the year 2020. The governing body, the United States Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for coordinating this program; track the progress of these objectives so as to improve the health of the population. Among the various goals set by this body, only three will be discussed in this paper to gain more insight as to what it entails. These include health equity to improve the health of all groups; social and physical environments that promote good health; and to promote quality of life, healthy development and healthy behavior across life stages.
Throughout the semester, the author has seen information about Healthy People 2020 over and over again. She cannot read a single chapter of Public Health Nursing: Population-Centered Health Care in the Community without seeing objectives from Healthy People 2020 that relates directly to that chapter’s subjects. Due to the heavy emphasis on this the author wanted to know more about what Healthy People 2020 was trying to accomplish and what are the specifics that this is trying to focus on. The other thing she wanted to do was go over three of the topics of Healthy People 2020 and come up with each type of prevention for each.
According to the US Census Bureau, 46.5 million people were living in poverty in 2012. Among those, 21.8 percent were children. Even more surprising is the staggering number of people who are food insecure. It is estimated that nearly 50 million Americans experience food insecurity during a given year. And yet, the obesity prevalence is skyrocketing. In 2010, 35.9 percent of adults over age 20 were obese, 18.4 percent of adolescents age 12-19 years were obese, 18 percent of children age 6-11 ...
One health is a concept of bringing together human, animal, and environmental health. That is a further step of the control of infectious disease. Over three decades, epidemic of new infectious diseases has occurred more often. Many unknown diseases such as Lyme disease, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Nipah virus disease, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) were not isolated before 1982. Moreover, growth rate of antibiotic resistance and re-emerging infectious diseases such as rabies and food-borne diseases are occurring nowadays. Where do these diseases come from? How can they be detected early? The answers are in the One Health which is a prevention strategy. In this report, it will be highlighted a brief explanation
Health literacy plays an important role in individuals’ decision-making. The scope of health literacy does not limit to traditional medical perspective. Its influence is associated with disease prevention, healthy lifestyle promotion, policy making, etc. This essay will first discuss the concept of health literacy and the consequences that link to it, and then give a strategy—designing user-centred messages in education, to improve health literacy,
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
Health Promotion Health promotion involves activities which increase well-being and also enhance wellness or health (Pender, Murdaugh & Parsons, 2006). Health promotion leads to a positive health potential for every individual, which means that those with acute or chronic conditions can also reach the actualization of positive health potential. According to WHO, 2001 health promotion is concerned with establishing new strategies that seek to encourage a wide variety of populations to be healthy and engage in healthy decisions. In a society improved health requires consistent policies on health promotion, by the co-operation of governments, internal organizations, and private agencies (WHO, 2005).
