This assessment project has been very beneficial to achieving and living a healthier lifestyle. This project allowed me to gain valuable insight to what I consume and how it affects my body. One thing I never really worried about throughout my life is my diet. Every since I was young I’ve always had a rather fast metabolism. Many people would consider me to be fortunate because it’s a blessing to have, but however I feel like it’s also been seen as a curse. Throughout my life gaining weight was a difficult challenge. I would have to consume about 6-8,00 calories daily just to maintain weight. No matter what I did I could never gain weight. This is until I was in the Marines. It was physically and mentally demanding. In addition to that with the help of my fellow Marines in weightlifting I went from being a scrawny 125lbs kid at age of 18 to a more solid 190lbs at the age of 23. It took a lot …show more content…
There are many health risks that run on my father’s side of the family. This has posed many concerns to whether I have inherited it and if it’s preventable. These would include heart disease, kidney failure, hypertension, thyroid problems, gout, arthritis, and diabetes. Our close family friends used to tell me stories about how my dad’s metabolism worked as well as mine, and that we had the similar build at my age. Now, my dad is a lot more cautious about what he consumes in fear of the repercussions of the effects later. However, occasionally he would neglect these warning and not have any self-restraint when eating certain kinds of unhealthy types of food. I’ve seen the pain that my dad as a result from having gout, and realized that’s not the kind of life I want for myself. These events definitely made me reevaluate my nutritional decisions and to start taking care of my body. This is in hopes of preventing myself from going through these same heath
Genetics plays a major role in obesity; inherited genes sometimes contribute to the accumulation of fat in the body. Over 200 genes have effect on the weight having repercussions from physical activity, food choices and metabolism. Therefore, genes may increase the vulnerability of a person to become obese. Family eating patterns and social tendencies can also trigger obesity. Moreover, environmental circumstances such as availability of food high in calories and fat and the increase of the portions and combination selections in meals contribute to the development of fat accumulated for years in the body (Whitney & Rolfes, 2011, pg. 277).
True to form for the man he was, stubborn and prideful; I remember he did not make any of the necessary lifestyle changes. On a regular basis, he ate large steaks, bacon, eggs, butter, whole milk, etc. and would put in a full day’s work every day. Now my dad is nearing the same age as my grandfather was when he died. By all appearances, it seems as if he is well on his way to suffering the same fate and, now that I understand that my genetics predispose me to high cholesterol, it seems that without preventative steps taken now, I could follow suit.
The purpose of writing this paper is to discuss the pros and cons of my diet. The nutritional analysis have thought me that my choices are not terrible but they are not the beast. However, a healthy lifestyle is necessary if I want to enjoy this life without health complications. Always Including some form of vegetable, fruits, and carbohydrates in my diet is ideal. However, that may not be on a regular basis and the portion might be too small to make a difference or too much to cause harm. All throughout my life I have never had to watch my weight or worry about my eating habits. I have always been able to eat all kinds of different foods unhealthy or healthy it never mattered because of my high metabolism. I never stopped to think of the effects or the problems I could obtain over time if I kept eating the same way. However, after being deeply affected by this semester by my own food journal, The Food Inc. movie, and The Eater Reader I now have a better sense of wisdom and better understanding of the types of foods I was putting into my body, and have stopped drinking carbonation but with the lack of time I will not be able to give up my eating habits up.
Health shapes our life, if you practice bad health practices, chances are you’re often sick, overweight, disease, or other medical issue. There are three main points of a person’s health, not just their physical health. The three parts are; social, mental/emotional, and of course physical. Setting health goals depends on age, body, and health of a person. I am 14 years old, and I am 5 feet tall, around 100 pounds. I’m generally the correct size for someone of my age. Though, it’s hard to achieve perfect health.
For many years, I ate whatever I wanted without regard to the nutritional value of the garbage I was putting in my mouth. About six years ago, at the age of 44, I found myself feeling fatigued all the time. I had no energy and couldn’t even walk around the mall without giving out of breath. I also started having a lot of aches and pains. Even though my blood pressure was in the normal range, my cholesterol levels were not. I am only five feet three inches tall, and at that point in time, I weighed 148 pounds. I felt like I was carrying around a ton of bricks. I decided to make a change and started making good, healthy decisions about what I was putting in my mouth. I gave up fried foods, over-processed foods (especially anything with trans fats), foods and liquids high in sugar, and paid special attention to my sodium intake. I started reading the food nutrition facts on everything that had one. Some people might say I became a fanatic about food labels, but I think it is essential to understand what you are putting in your mouth. For this paper I decided to take a second and evaluate my life and think about what were some of my current lifestyle habits and behaviors and which out of these habits would I like to change. After sitting down and evaluating all of my main habits I categorized them into groups of which ones were helping to lead me to a long healthy lifestyle and which ones were likely to lead me to an unhealthy life and lifestyle. After narrowing these unhealthy habits down to my top three I decided to focus this paper and my attention on my current nutrition and most of all on my negative eating habits. After evaluating my lifestyle and all of my unhealthy habits I felt that my current nutrition level and eating patterns were in need of the most improvement and change.
My decision to proceed as a dietitian comes from my passion for disease prevention and control in children and the elderly. My curiosity with chronic non-communicable diseases began after the death of my grandmothers; who passed away due to complications from type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and stomach cancer. At a young age, I began to become acquainted with the health sciences, which stimulated my interest for nutrition, epidemiology, nutrigenetics, and nutrigenomics. The notion that an interaction between our diet and genes has been a realization that opened my eyes to believe that disease prevention is possible. As the number of older Americans begins to rise, my goal is to taper the number of prevalent cases of chronic diseases through education at all stages of life.
I placed myself on a diet until the doctors know what is going on with my health and body. The foods I am eating daily are plant foods, natural galactose that comes from natural fruits. My BMI is high because I am gaining weight for no reason and some of my medications have side effect of weight gain. My estimated energy requirement calories that I should be consuming on daily is about 2,318. My average EER on my daily dietary log averaged to about 700 calories a day. I started to eat a lot of whole grain foods, vegetables, and fruits to lower my BMI and eat the daily EER calories I need to lose weight and start to feel healthy. My exercises are moderate and I do a lot of low intense cardio training to keep my muscles strong and active without being in too much pain every day. My grandfather as he is getting older needs to watch what he eats because of his gout. This is a form of arthritis disease that older people will sometimes get. Gout is painful and will inflame the joints in on your body and this happens when too much uric acid crystallizes and deposits to the joints. My grandfather has stop consuming alcohol and watches what he eats and makes sure that he is losing weight and getting proper exercises to relive some of the painful joints. Food is one of the necessities of life in order to survive. Everyone has different views on what to eat and different eating habits. People are so busy in their everyday life that they don’t keep track of what they eat on a daily basis. However, it is important to understand the role of nutrition. Nutrition and exercise are vital to maintain physical health. Proper nutrition is required by our body for energy, growth, maintenance, and repair (Grodner, Roth, & Walkingshw, 2012). Even the brain requires nutrients in order for a person to be intellectually healthy. Along with nutrition, exercise can be controlled by an individual. Exercise helps to strengthen bones and muscles, control weight, improves mental health and mood, reduces risk for cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, and some cancers, and overall increases the chances of living longer (CDC). For this assignment, I kept a food journal by tracking what I ate and the amount of exercise on a daily basis on a food tracker for three weeks. The purpose of that was to analyze my diet and exercise in more depth in order to determine the amount of vitamins, minerals, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and calories I am eating daily. Based on the results, I made some modifications.

A healthy lifestyle is usually picked up as we get older. However, think of how much more beneficial it would be for our bodies when we get older, if we would have learned and adapted to a healthier lifestyle when we were younger? Teaching your kids how important a healthy diet is, will help them maintain that lifestyle in their older years. Not to mention have lower health risks, higher self-esteem and it will give them the energy they need to keep up with their eating habits and maintain their body weight.
