My personal philosophy is most related to Nola Pender’s Theory of the Health Promotion Model otherwise known as PHPM. I believe her five concepts of person, environment, nursing, health, and illness all play a role in a person’s life at some stage of our span of living. As described by McCutcheon, Schaar & Parker (2016), “PHPM, as a nursing-based theory, incorporates a metaparadigm into the theoretical framework that defines the concepts of person, environment, health, and nursing (p. 14).” All of Pender’s concepts interact with each other stemming from prior individual behavior and personal factors. I believe individual behaviors, factors, and experiences dictate how each one views and lives life. To understand why a person does what he or she does is the main goal in trying to understand humans, which is my personal philosophy towards the client. There are many parts that make up a person including: how one thinks, reacts, feels or perceives and the factors that dictate it. Incorporating the health promotion model into the care of the client would seek to understand a person’s past experiences and how that affects one’s behavior towards a present experience …show more content…
Exercising, eating right, and having routine health visits are all helpful in preventing disease of the mind and body. Using the health promotion model across the lifespan of a person to incorporate health-promoting behaviors is an on-going goal that never stops (Alligood, 2014). It is an interactive approach in which the person wants to live an optimal level of health trying to live a life free of disease or stress. Pender also recognizes that a person’s personal factors and behaviors are instrumental in one’s health and can hinder one’s optimal health (Alligood, 2014). This is where the role of nursing comes to the forefront as nursing is the response to the human
In this essay, I will be using the understanding of two psycho-social theories, the theory of planned behavior and the health belief model, and the professional ethics to explain how it can lead to the development of concordant medicines-taking behavior in Amira Masood. Concordant is which doctor, pharmacist and patient agree therapeutic decisions that including their respective opinions, to a deeper understanding which extends from prescribing communication to patient support in medicine taking. (1) I will be also discussing the issues of consent and confidentiality arising in the case. The health belief model is comprising by four basic beliefs.

Safe staffing issue has been identified as one of the problem in health care. The problem resulted from the inappropriate ratio between the nurse and the number of patients a nurse takes care within a shift. Patients and nurses well-being are being at risk because of the inappropriate safe staffing because of nurses feeling overwhelmed and stressed with their job. It was learned from the previous papers that the issue with staff level can be intervened by applying the theory of Health Promotion Model as a framework in assisting nurse leaders in creating policies that ensure healthy and appropriate work practices, determine the appropriate number of nurse to
It also offers physical, psychological and social environment. Health Promotion is considered as a philosophy, multispectral and socio-cultural technique that purpose to promote the health and wellbeing of persons and communities through health education, supportive environments and so on. (Kozier et al., 2014, p.143). As a nurse, a first recommendation to Jessica is to select low calories and highly nutritious food. Jessica used to smoke packets of cigarettes, eat unhealthy, junk foods and drink alcohol. To prevent from illness, Jessica she has to eat healthy foods and reduce to drink alcohol in order to get healthy lifestyle. Another problem Jessica is getting stress when her boyfriend left her alone and she take care of her child alone. To get good life style, Jessica has to do physical activities such as meditation and involve in some exercise program. Meditation can reduce from getting illness. Secondly, health promotion of health is for Jessica’s sister Jenna. Jenna is not much age but she is overweight. Overweight is more likely to get disease easily. Jenna also eats junk foods and pop. Due to her overweight, she feels uncomfortable to do exercise. To prevent from diseases and get safe and healthy lifestyle Jenna has to change her unsafe habits. Jessica’s family has to involve the programs that are provided by health care services It aims to prevent disease before it occurs. This is
The health promotion is a key factor process of permitting people to increase control over their health status in order to improve it. It not only covers the actions directly aimed at increasing the skills and capabilities of individuals, but is also aimed at changing the social, environmental and economic issues that impact on healthy habits.
Nurses should perform interventions and educate to encourage healthy behavior when an individual is not presently ill. Furthermore, relevance of this model regarding individuals who are presently ill is practically inconsequential due to lack of immediate curative factors. Regardless, the model can still be useful in educating the ill patient on how to participate in health promoting behavior that will prevent onset or further progression of illnesses. The goal of healthcare providers should be to evaluate, intervene, and help patients set realistic goals that accommodate the multidimensional aspects of their life in order to effectively promote optimal health as the end
To start off, I am going to explain the Health Promotion definition. Health is one’s ability to function well physically, mentally, and socially in order to function within the environment in which they are living in (World Health Organization, 2016). Encouraging one’s control over their own health in relation to social and environmental interventions defines health promotion which leads to the optimization of health (World Health Organization, 2016). It is essential for older adults to partake in changing their lifestyle in terms of their behavior and applying the knowledge they receive from health care providers in order to promote health (World Health Organization, 2016). Older adults mostly have a hard time taking care of themselves and need the assistance to guide them for their well-being. Therefore, nurses have a vital role in providing information and teaching individuals how to gain healthy ideas to promote healthy behaviors. Health promotion is a crucial element in supporting an older adult living with a health challenge such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Given the magnitude of health costs, both financial and in terms of human suffering, it is essential that preventive interventions be developed and/or enhanced. Nurses, physicians, and other helping professionals are in a good position, by virtue of their training, to add to such preventive efforts. Health is defined as a condition of physical, mental, and social well being and the absence of disease or other abnormal condition. It is not a static condition; constant change and adaptation to stress result in homeostasis (Mosby's Medical and Nursing Dictionary, 1994 p. 742). The fact that we can improve our health and extend our lives by changing our behaviors (i.e., eating well, exercising, not smoking, and reducing stress) supports the incorporation of health education, and prevention programs into a broad variety of settings.
Health promotion is a multifaceted movement with a core value on respect, empowerment, equity, inclusion and social justice (MacDougall 2002). Aims to achieve holistic health, while it is influenced by medical and social determinants. These determinants which aids to deter...
Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..
Throughout her career in nursing and studying health, Pender received a Lifetime Achievement Award, an honorary doctorate in science, and was given a Distinguished Alumni Award (Petiprin, 2016). Pender was also one of the founders of the Midwest Nursing Research Society. Though retired, she continues to work on research and acts as a consultant for health promotion (Petiprin, 2016). According to Pender, her theory was influenced by attempting to develop a more positive model of care in contrast to other theories that focus on negative motivation. Pender also was motivated to develop her health promotion model after observing health care being provided following the patient’s development of an illness (Petiprin, 2016). She felt strongly about improving the individual’s quality of life through the use of health prevention education and also understood the financial benefits of decreased health care
To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. Therefore, health promotion is not just the responsibility of the health sector, but goes beyond healthy life-styles to wellbeing. Health promotion goes beyond health care. It puts health on the agenda of policy makers in all sectors and at all levels. It directs policy makers to be aware of the health consequences of their decisions and accept their responsibilities for
Healthy People 2020 knows how to implicate the role of a nurse in health promotion activities. This is because nurses recognize that promoting wellness and healthy lifestyles are key to eliminating the unequal burden of disease. Nurses are at the head of patient care but most importantly nurses are the foundation of patient teaching presently. In the past the focus of nursing may have been on treating an illness, and making the patient feel well again. Going forward the focus is geared toward patient teaching. The more the nurse can teach their patient about health and well-being the less room for
Health promotion consists of all actions that encourage maximum spiritual, mental and physical functions despite of whether an individual is ill or well. Most of these plans are aimed at bringing positive lifestyle changes (Van Leuven, & Prion, 2007). A major core competency for all NPs is health promotion. Through regular screening, immunizations and counselling, NPs can guide their patients towards the goal of health promotion and disease prevention. As a future NP, my goal is to provide patient-centered, holistic care focusing on health promotion and sickness prevention. I also believe that an understanding of practice models like Pender’s Health Promotion Model will enable me to empower patients to obtain self-efficacy and behavior specific changes.
