With the twists and turns that comes with life I was not able to start graduate school right away. A month after moving I landed a position with an organization that was totally opposite of my degree field. Very interesting field, but not interesting enough for me not to continue to reach for my dreams. While taking the Health Care Administration course, I intend to receive the preparation a professional needs to manage, lead and improve the shifting health care system. I also intend for this class to improve my efforts, to meet the needs of the vigorous health care system, and to emphasize socially appropriate patient-centered service delivery systems. After completing this course I hope to take away leadership skills, more knowledge on the meticulous rules and regulations of health care setting, and how to handle problems that arise and are significant challenges for health administrators at a variety of levels. Since I started College in 2004, I focused on taking as many science classes as possible. I wanted to stay in medical field, I never thought of myself being in the business field. I used to think medical field would open the door to many secured jobs in pharmacy and dentistry. In 2007, my mom had a severe stroke. After taking two years off from school to take care of my mom, my goal changed. Going back to school, I wanted a degree which I could find a job right when I get out of school and while waiting to get into pharmacy school. My choices of pharmacy schools were narrow down to in state schools only. I was lucky to be introduced to Health Care Management by a friend. Health Care Management sounded attractive to me because I always wanted to work in the health care field. I was not sure I was born to be a manager. I had experience with project management working for a private law firm for two years but not people management. A few years ago, I took the class “how to deal with difficult people” at Community College of Aurora because I doubted my communication skill. I never thought I would be a good communicator. In middle school, writing in Vietnamese was one of my strengths, I even wanted to be a journalist when I grow up but when writing in English, it is one of my weaknesses. Two years ago, I was writing my letter of intent for my application to the Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Healthcare Administration revealing my failures, and most significantly, that I lost my passion and didn’t know where to start. I also conceded that I was relatively unaware of the field of Public Administration (PA). Little did I know, examining PA theories would enable me to connect the final dots in the big picture of my life, where I came from, who I’d come to be, what choices I’d made, the relationships I nurtured, and my dreams and desires for the future. Although confidence came slowly and awkwardly, I discovered my desire to contribute to the advancement of public health policies. I am writing to express my interest in continuing to the Doctoral program in the School of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).
