The purpose of the following report is to examine how and why the travel and tourism sector undertake health and safety practices and how this effects business operations. It will address how a certain workplace tackles legislation and include suggestions on how an organisation can improve their methods. St John Holt et al. (2009) suggest that basic principles should be observed in setting up strategies for control and management of health and safety at work. Primarily, strategies and planning are enforced to prevent the occurrence of incidents and are there to protect both the employer and employee. According to RoSPA (2014), an accident resultant from poor health and safety management can be defined as an unplanned, unexpected occurrence which can lead to injury of people, damage to plant, machinery or the environment and/or some other loss. Similarly, a “near-miss” is an unplanned event which has the potential to cause the latter.

1.1 Method of Audit

To strengthen this audit, a work placement will be undertaken in a division of the travel and tourism environment. Because health and safety law is so complex between different workplaces, it can be condensed and assessed successfully when concentrating on a specific place of work. Assessing how a workplace complies with health and safety legislation and identifying the policies and guidelines put in place at the specific organisation enables us a clear understanding of how important it is to ensure a safe and secure work environment. 3.2 Eaves Hall Health & Safety Policies

Eaves Hall is managed by an organisation called James’ Places, who also own a number of different venues, hotels and pubs within the area. Health & safety policies are apparent within the company, however they work alongside professional and experienced external agencies to administer and distribute up-to-date legal guidelines, where the employer has the duty to pass these on to employee. In accordance with current legislation, the organisation issue a ‘Health & Safety Handbook’ prepared by Natwest Mentor Group, experts in employment law. The handbook supplements their arrangements
