A BRAIN FOR BUSINESS: DEFINING BUSINESS ACUMEN
Heather Moore
University of the People
Have you ever heard the phrase, "He's got a head for business?” When the expression first entered my consciousness, I did not understand what a business-oriented mind entailed and was not sure if I had a head for business. Business acumen has always been a subject of interest due to its attractive vocabulary personality, but also for its inherent mystery to my discernment. No one in my family ever discussed business or the requirements necessary to run a successful business. There was never a mentor or friend that I had the privilege to impart upon me the knowledge of the 'business sacred'.Self-defined I classify

Business acumen is the "keenness and quickness in understanding and dealing with a business situation in a manner that is likely to lead to a good outcome.”(Roven, 2015). I find the subject wholly fascinating due to the fact that I consider myself to be a creative, keen individual. From that foundation, I seek to understand how to integrate the skills that I do possess and learn those aspects I am not as intimately familiar with; a businesses' financial, bookkeeping, advertising and procedural segments. If I am intelligent and quickly responsive to produce original and innovative ideas, create catchy slogans, sketch advertising concepts and connect with consumers emotionally then knowing the complimentary facets of a commercial enterprise will aid me in gaining the ultimate business …show more content…
Cope best states my interest in developing business acumen characteristics in his 2012 work Seeing the Big Picture, Business Acumen to Build Your Credibility, Career and Company. Someone who "understands how the moving parts of a company work together to make it successful...how financial metrics like profit margin, cash flow, and stock price reflect how well each of those moving parts is doing its job.” That is the exact insight into business I hope to gain by studying at University of the People. I seek to discover my "executive mentality” (Cope, 2012).The ability to see all the working parts of a business, understand them and how they come together to achieve the successful business sum is the knowledge I seek to gain. In addition, Cope outlines additional abilities that describe someone with' strong business acumen such as understanding important communications, data and financial statements, using personal knowledge to make good decisions for the company, understanding how an individual's actions impact crucial company procedures and the objective of leaders within the organization and the ability to effectively communicate your ideas to others in the organization.' Businesses exist to produce goods and services. If someone is thinking of starting up their own business or becoming part of an existing business, they would have to have the knowledge of what makes business work successfully and know how to how to apply that knowledge in the particular area of business. For this unit I will be entering and exploring the world of business. For this unit I will encounter and evaluate information provided by certain businesses and actually gather my own information from at least one business. The business I have chosen to study is J Sainsbury’s.

“Success is more of a function of consistent common sense than it is of genius.” This is something that has struck me my entire life, that through good work ethic and keeping rational, one can succeed in life. I didn’t get to college with genius, or start a company with it. Only by keeping myself intact was I able to grow my company, and make sure it never hit rock bottom (At least while I was head of the company).
Throughout the beginning of this semester I have looked at how individuals behave within business organizations. Through various exercises and results, I have found a number of patterns within my behavior and interests. I have become aware what interests me, and a number of skills/abilities I was oblivious I had. This reflection and in class exercises has allowed me to expand my skills, abilities, and behaviors, well fitting them into prospective future employment.

Often times, I can’t help but wonder what my life would be like if I haven’t been exposed to the world of business; a wonderful career that changed my life completely. I have taken interest in business career because I love calculating numbers and interacting with people; But most importantly, my fascination in business came from my grandfather. He taught me many valuable tips on how to be a successful person, and most certainly how to run a business. He was not only a successful businessman, but also a respected individual. One of the businesses that he owned was a company called “Wu Long Tea Factory”. The main thing that they produce is tea of course, but they also have products such as cakes, candies, and all kinds of stuff. By being the production manager’s assistant of this company, I was able to experience everything that was going on in the factory. Even though that was the background I grew up in, my biggest fascination wasn’t in being a manager in a factory; it was the finance part that got me all excited. Often times I can even see myself sitting in my office and work on clients’ financial profiles and statements. I also took extra math classes and participated in many of the competitions in order to prepare myself to succeed in this particular field. Other things that I also did to get me well prepared are joining school activities, applying internships, and having jobs. I believe that all my hard work will pay off, when I see myself as a successful businessman.
