The Hardships of Self-Identifying Oneself as A Homosexual in Society Society has grown to accept and be more opened to a variety of new or previously shunned cultural repulsions. Lesbians, transgenders, and gays for example were recognized as shameful mistakes in society. In the story Giovanni 's Room, the author James Baldwin explores the hardships of gays in the 1960. The book provides reasons why it is difficult for men to identify themselves as homosexuals. This is shown through the internalized voice of authority, the lack of assigned roles for homosexuals in society and the consequences entailed for the opposite gender. It is difficult for men to identify themselves as homosexuals because homosexual desires are forbidden by the …show more content…
David demonstrates confusion with his sense of belonging in society by identifying as a homosexual, yet wanting to live a structured life like what society qualifies it to be between men and women. In the book the reference of not qualifying homosexuals as men is especially defined in the scene where David and Giovanni argue before parting ways; ' ' 'I can have a life with (Hella). ' (…) 'What kind of life can two men have together anyway? (…) You want to go out and be the big laborer and bring home the money, and you want me to stay here and wash the dishes and cook the food and clean this miserable closet of a room and kiss you when you come through that door and lie with you at night and be your little girl (…) But I 'm a man, ' ' '(142). This quote implies that David is still brain washed by society 's views of gender role, and since there are no defined roles for the life of homosexuals, David is thus pro-pulsed towards leaving his true identity as a homosexual behind in order to have a structured life. The vast majority of people grow up with the idea of having a life similar to that of their parents '. In Giovanni 's room, it is expected of David to be just like his father, to have parties and be surrounded by women and alcohol, which society has …show more content…
Society has lead to the inevitable idea of gender roles in not only relationships, but also in everyday life situations. In the upcoming quote, Hella states, ' 'But if a particular man is ever at the mercy of a particular woman—why, he 's somehow stopped being a man. And the lady, then, is more neatly trapped than ever ' ' (125). She explains to David the principle that a woman simply cannot be woman without a man. A woman without a man is destabilizing, since she cannot be given the opportunity of motherhood or of tending to her husband which is a lifestyle greatly defining the 1960s. This is also seen at the beginning of the book, when it is stated that his aunt Ellen moves in with David and his father, after the loss of his mother. Ellen lacking the presence of a man in her life, and the lack of a motherly presence in a house of two males was destabilizing for them all, demonstrating a great importance of gender roles in a family. Therefore, since Ellen moved in with her brother and her nephew, it gave her the opportunity to be a woman; to tend to the needs of a man in this case her brother, and also to the needs of a child, thus offering her a source of stability. Men being essential in a woman 's life is also seen towards the

The topic of homosexuality has become a constant issue throughout our society for many years. Many people believe that being gay is not acceptable for both religious and moral reasons. Because being gay is not accepted, many homosexuals may feel shame or guilt because of the way they live their everyday lives. This in turn can affect how the person chooses to live their life and it can also affect who the person would like to become. Growing up, David Sedaris struggled to find the common ground between being gay as well as being a normal teenager. He often resorted to the conclusion that you could not be both. Sedaris allows us to see things through his young eyes with his personable short story "I Like Guys". Throughout his short story, Sedaris illustrates to the reader what it was like growing up being gay as well as how the complexities of being gay, and the topic of sexuality controlled his lifestyle daily. He emphasizes the shame he once felt for being gay and how that shame has framed him into the person he has become.
...rget it. This negative view of homosexuality is enforced by society, which David absorbs into himself.
Andrew Sullivan, author of, What is a Homosexual, portrays his experience growing up; trapped in his own identity. He paints a detailed portrait of the hardships caused by being homosexual. He explains the struggle of self-concealment, and how doing so is vital for social acceptation. The ability to hide one’s true feelings make it easier to be “invisible” as Sullivan puts it. “The experience of growing up profoundly different in emotional and psychological makeup inevitably alters a person’s self-perception.”(Sullivan)This statement marks one of the many reasons for this concealment. The main idea of this passage is to reflect on those hardships, and too understand true self-conscious difference. Being different can cause identity problems, especially in adolescents.
Baldwin portrays sexual oppression in his novel entitled, Giovanni's Room. Sexual oppression is exemplified through individual homosexual white men who are unable to find happiness or contentment in themselves or in everyday
In society, there has always been a gap between men and women. Women are generally expected to be homebodies, and seen as inferior to their husbands. The man is always correct, as he is more educated, and a woman must respect the man as they provide for the woman’s life. During the Victorian Era, women were very accommodating to fit the “house wife” stereotype. Women were to be a representation of love, purity and family; abandoning this stereotype would be seen as churlish living and a depredation of family status. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Henry Isben’s play A Doll's House depict women in the Victorian Era who were very much menial to their husbands. Nora Helmer, the protagonist in A Doll’s House and the narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” both prove that living in complete inferiority to others is unhealthy as one must live for them self. However, attempts to obtain such desired freedom during the Victorian Era only end in complications.
which leads David to believe that he can't do that as long as he's gay. David

Why is David lying to himself? In Giovanni’s Room, novelist and social critic James Baldwin creates a characterization in David to illustrate a personal conflict and its apparent complications onto his reality. Baldwin implores David’s fear and inner battle of discovering the truth about his identity which leads to a crisis and chaos. David is terrified of being himself and fabricates a fallacy of his sexual orientation creating the destructive nature to his actions. Baldwin’s proclaims a barricade of protection to David’s world. David is utilizing his lies as an doubtful alternative of self-preservation rather than facing the threat of telling the truth and facing the challenges it is to come. David is an individual trapped inside his own body trying to understand the confusion of his mind. Ultimately, David continues to lie as a form of self-protection and preservation to the hidden life he has habitually created and is drowned in the downfall is has brought him.
David is slowly learning how difficult it is to accept who you are in a an opinionated world. Although, David knows that he needs to accept himself and his own humanity, it is very troublesome for him because his confidence level is very low now that Giovanni is away from him. His fiancé is gone, his best friend has moved far away, his man lover is in custody and here sits David questioning his sexuality with a ginormous fear of losing his masculinity. During the times that Giovanni and David are alone in his room, he is content and lets himself be loved by Giovanni the way he wants to be even when a part of him is telling him that its wrong.. “He pulled me against him, putting himself into my arms as though he were giving himself to me to carry, and slowly pulled me down with him to that bed. With everything in me screaming NO! yet the sum of me sighed Yes.”(pg.64) David allows
In 1906, “Imre: A Memorandum”, a novel written by author, Edward Prime-Stevenson was the first English- language novel that did not belong to a specific genre openly dealing with the positive outlooks on homosexual passions. The novel is narrated
David sees women as a powerless figures who need a man to be controlled. “. “Soon she will be positively heavy. Letting herself go, as what happens when one withdraws from the field of love.” (Coetzee 65)” David brings emphasis to withdrawing from love as if women cannot have sexual love without a man present. Lucy brings uncertainty to David’s logic by being gay and not having any male figures in her life. David quotes “Would they dare to share a bed while he was in the house? If the bed creaked in the night, would they be embarrassed? Embarrassed enough to stop? But what does he know about what women do together? (10.57) David shows confusion in not knowing how sex is enjoyable without a man present. Showing David’s ignorance based on his sexual reasoning. He quotes “He presses on the issue how money can live without a man present.” Coetzee used David’s view towards women and Gender as a sign of his change in viewpoint towards females. Lucy is from the start a very strong woman who takes care of herself and she breaks all the traditional gender roles. Coetzee brings emphasis to gender roles and how it relates to sexual identity. Females without a man cannot been seen as a present figure in society. They are individuals who withdraw from love. Judith Butler argues “To say that gender is performative is a little different because for something to be performative means that it
In Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, David battles with his desire for men, and the social stigma that he knows he would have to confront if he lives an openly homosexual lifestyle. Due to the lack of acceptance David feels for himself, he causes irreparable damage to his fiancé Hella, and the man he is in love with, David. . Although David is well aware that his behavior regarding his sexuality is having such a painful effect on Giovanni, he opts to hurt the person he truly loves, rather than accept his desires and allow himself to live a life of happiness that many heterosexual people never have the opportunity to experience. Why is Hella willing to ignore all the signs pointing to David’s homosexuality and continue in a relationship that she does not appear to be happy in David and Hella make decisions that follow what society deems acceptable, with David’s decisions ultimately ruining lives. Why is it easier to live a lie, and ruin the lives of the people that you claim to love in order to please an unaccepting society?
An issue that has, in recent years, begun to increase in arguments, is the acceptability of homosexuality in society. Until recently, homosexuality was considered strictly taboo. If an individual was homosexual, it was considered a secret to be kept from all family, friends, and society. However, it seems that society has begun to accept this lifestyle by allowing same sex couples. The idea of coming out of the closet has moved to the head of homosexual individuals when it used to be the exception.
In order to discuss the biology of gender identity and sexual orientation, it is necessary to first examine the differences between multiple definitions that are often mistakenly interchanged: sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Sexual orientation is defined by LeVay (2011) as “the trait that predisposes us to experience sexual attraction to people of the same sex as ourselves, to persons of the other sex, or to both sexes” (p. 1). The typical categories of sexual orientation are homosexual, heterosexual and bisexual. Vrangalova and Savin-Williams (2012) found that most people identify as heterosexual, but there are also groups of people that identify as mostly heterosexual and mostly gay within the three traditional categories (p. 89). This is to say that there are not three concrete groups, but sexual orientation is a continuum and one can even fluctuate on it over time. LeVay (2011) also defines gender as “the ...
