Revenge is to exact punishment or expiation for a wrong. In the play Hamlet, Hamlet is successful in exacting revenge while Laertes unsuccessful, the Fortinbras are also deemed successful and this will be elaborated further.

In the beginning of the play, Hamlet receives information from a ghost that claims to be his father informing Hamlet his uncle has killed his father. Hamlet is unsure of this information and whether it’s true so he tactically plans "to put an antic disposition on" to try attain the truth before exacting revenge. With the help of the play Hamlet orchestrated he attains the truth and "...takes the Ghost's word for a thousand pound...” Later in the play Hamlet acquires the right time to force Clauduis to drink his own poisoned drink and has wound him with his sword-Hamlet thus succeeds in exacting revenge by getting rid of "that incestuous, that adulterate beast" and handing the competent Fortinbras the title of King who "let four captains bear Hamlet like a soldier to the stage, for he was likely, had he been put on, to have proved most royally..." In their eyes Hamlet was a soldier (hero). Hamlet’s path of revenge makes him a direct foil to Laertes. …show more content…
