On October 6, 1963, Emperor Haile Selassie addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations, awakening the conscious of World Leaders by his riveting speech that called for disarmament and prevention of a nuclear arms race and nuclear war. Emperor Haile Selassie preached the need for collective security and peace on an international level, and declared to World Leaders that Africa’s emergence as a free, victorious, and independent continent was inevitable. Emperor Haile Selassie spoke against the backwardness of racial prejudice and the contradictions of World leaders who advocated peace, yet subjugated nations of African peoples. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a movie based on the book by Mildred D. Taylor. It was released on June 2,1978 and has a runtime of an hour and 35 minutes. The target audience of this movie is mainly children and families, especially for those who have strong feelings about racism and injustice. In the movie, Cassie is the narrator and wants everyone to be treated fairly, even though she doesn’t yet understand the society that she lives in. Her brother, Stacey is gullible, but has a good heart and wants to do the right thing. The movie centers around the Logans, who are a determined family fighting for their rights. I believe the book is better than the movie because it describes all the events in much more detail than those pictured in the movie.

In this section, I will provide a brief history of U.S. military involvement on the African continent, starting with the Barbary Wars and working up through the current date. This historical documentation will highlight the change in the role the United States has played in Africa [post 9-11???]. Prior to 9-11, the United States’ interactions were mainly [capture summary here]. Since [?], however, the continent has faced a marked increase in violent extremism and terrorism leading the United States to partner with many African nations in counterterrorism initiatives. These, and other initiatives, mean an increasing number U.S. service members are deploying to Africa to take part in training, humanitarian issues and military operations. These military activities are run by United States African Command, a recently created combatant command.
The first article I analyzed to explore the Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13 is entitled “Mara Salvatrucha: The Most Dangerous Street Gang in the Americas?” The title is posed as a question that the researcher attempted to answer throughout the entirety of the writing. Primary and secondary sources from firsthand interviews and questionnaires administered to gang members in adult and juvenile detention centers (6) to official and survey data to construct a more accurate image of the gang than what has been seen in the past (4) were analyzed to form solid conclusions. The researchers used empirical proof that was drawn from both the United States and Central American countries where the presence of the gang is most heavily felt (4). The problems the researchers ran into while researching by means of these methods were that it was difficult to access a sizable cohort of gang members to administer in depth studies to (5) and that the sample size or technique could undercut the representativeness of
On November 2, 1930 Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned the emperor of Ethiopia. He changed his name at the coronation to Haile Selassie, which means “Might of the Trinity.” Other titles he went by were, “conquering the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, King of the Kings of Ethiopia, and Elect of God.” Distinctive texts for Selassie were Revelation 5:5, Ezekiel 28:25, and Garvey’s prophecy. It was believed by Garvey’s followers that Selassie was...
It was no wonder why Billie Holiday was considered to be the woman of jazz, her sweet velvet voice carried the crowd. With hits like strange fruit that told a darker story it was easy to see where her passion came from. She told stories in her music and people across the nation were more than willing to sit down and listen to what she had to say. Billie Holiday was an icon of her time and there was not a person who listened to jazz that could say they did not know her name. Her voice was smooth with a hint of seduction that had her audiences reeling. However, things were not always so glamourous.
Africa has long been a nation of conflict and strife. Certain countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have a prolonged history of corrupt leaders, violence and lack of resources. These conflicts often can lead to spill over and create wars in their neighboring countries. When a weak state has internal conflict it often spreads to surrounding weak states as it did with many of the countries in central Africa. This type of crisis will often involve the entire world in a variety of capacities such as militaries, foreign aid and the global economy. Congo especially has proved to create problems that continue to persist in the modern world and much of that is due to leadership of Motubu Sese Seko. “The conflict [in Congo] produced tremendous carnage: as many as 3.8 million dead and many more injured or displaced. Both phrases of the war (1996-97 and 1998-2002) involved domestic militias, a massive foreign invasion, and shifting alliances – with Angola, Rwanda, Uganda and Zimbabwe playing major roles. Even though the was has officially ended, peace remains elusive”(Atzili 2007 pg 141). One player’s internal conflicts spread through an entire continent and affected the whole world and caused enormous damage. All countries need to strive to maintain strong institutions to be a good global citizen and one of the keys to this is leadership.
The Logan family has many issues on their mind, but there is one person that feels the most isolated from these issues. It starts off with the Jefferson Davis incident, then the Lillian Jean Simms fussle, then lastly, Mr. Barnett and his store incident. Segregation and racism affected Cassie the most throughout Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D Taylor. To begin with, in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Cassie is the most affected by segregation and racism. Towards the beginning of the novel, Cassie and her siblings are walking to school and the Jefferson Davis Bus is trailing behind them after a rainy day.

"The wind of change is blowing through this [African] continent, and whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact. We must all accept it as a fact, and our national policies must take account of it" (Macmillan). This speech, made by the prime minister of England in 1960, highlights the vast changes occurring in Africa at the time. Changes came quickly. Over the next several years, forty-seven African countries attained independence from colonial rule. Many circumstances and events had and were occurring that led to the changes to which he was referring. The decolonization of Africa occurred over time, for a variety of complex reasons, but can be broken down into two major contributing factors: vast changes brought about in the world because of World War II and a growing sense of African nationalism.
At the end of WWII is when decolonization was brought up as a serious topic of discussion. Over 200,000 Africans had fought in Europe and Asia for the Allies’ freedom and democracy which showed quite the contradiction. They were fighting for something that wasn’t even going to truly benefit them. In 1945 is when the 5th Pan African Conference met to go over the possibility of granting back independence to the colonized areas. Ghana played a significant role during the decolonization process in Africa because Ghana was the first Sub-Saharan African majority government to gain independence in 1957. Not only did Ghana gain independence, but they did this by acting nonviolently. For years following th...
