Community service plays an important role when it comes to communication. I have volunteered for over 100 hours these past 2 years and I have definitely gained some knowledge along the way. For this assignment, I have decided to volunteer at a donation store and at a pet adoption event. This has taught me how to communicate efficiently with the people I am around. Volunteering has its ups and downs such as being able to meet amazing people with the same interests but also experiencing some miscommunication as well.

The first place I volunteered for was the Habitat for Humanity Restore. This is a donation center that sells used appliances, furniture, and home accessories at a lower price. They are addressing our landfill problems. Most people do not consider donating their used appliances or furniture and they would just throw it out instead. This adds to the already negative pile-ups in landfills. The U.S alone is already the number one trash producing country in the world producing 1,609 pounds of trash per person per year (Solid Waste& Landfill Facts). This is where you are focusing on a specific stimuli (Beebe et al., 1996). I realized how much of an impact this can cause to both parties in interpersonal communication. While volunteering at the Restore, I was assigned various tasks whether is was fixing, cleaning, or moving the furniture and occasionally there's customers that would ask you for help and my supervisors would ask me to do something else as well at the same time. I am not good at multitasking so if I am helping another customer, I tend to selectively block out what other people say to me because I am only focused on helping the customer. This affects
