“Habit is stronger than reason”
I believe that habit is, indeed stronger than reason. However, to completely prove this statement we should first understand what exactly constitutes a habit. Habits can be anything from day to day routine like brushing our teeth or combing our hair to the very knowledge we are taught. It is a tendency to do something routinely or on a regular basis or an automatic reaction to certain situations (I want to rethink my definition). Habits are often hard to give up and habitual urges can often be stronger than reason. For example, our sleep patterns are part of our habits. If I were to go to sleep at 3:00am every night, but one day choose to go to bed at an earlier time (say 9:30pm), it would be difficult to simply go to bed at that time despite being aware of the amount of sleep I need to be productive. My body would be used to sleeping at a certain time and altering that habit would be difficult.

Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
Brain is the most powerful organ in the human body, since it’s responsible for everything from the way you move to what you think; however, the lack of distinguishing between good and bad habits challenges individuals to understand the habit loop. In his novel, The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg presents a diagram of the habit loop cycle explaining how habits form with the presence of a cue, followed through by a routine, and ending with a reward. From Duhigg’s theories on habits, I continue my habit, or routine of constantly listening to music with lyrics while doing schoolwork whether that is studying for a test or doing homework for a class because I crave the reward of finishing schoolwork while listening to music; however,
Logic affects our lives everyday. We use it both subconsciously and consciously to make decisions which can be as important as our careers, or as insignificant as what to eat for lunch. Logic can also be used in other ways. Ironically, others’ bad logic can result in us learning something just as much as we learn from our own bad decisions. This is shown in Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail.
Criminals have been committing crimes for centuries, and they are always fooling the police detectives and federal agencies sometimes. If the justice departments would actually look at the persons thought processes and reasoning before a crime is committed, the justice departments will be able to answer the reason for the crime. The different departments could possibly figure out why the criminal did what they did in the first. For instance, they should use a couple of criminology theories to help them with certain cases that are more difficult than the rest. The theories that the justice departments should use in their systems are the rational choice and biological theories of criminology.
Humans are born to have the freedom to decide what they should focus their existence on. Their goals will often created unique experiences around the world while they are working on them. In the essay “On Habit”, Alain de Botton uses his own experience to demonstrate how a mundane world in human's mind can become very interesting. It can be difficult to imagine how to perform this change when humans exist in a society where competitions and stereotypes are present since these competitions and stereotypes often cause humans to neglect the details of the world around them. This negligence of details can cause their experiences to be narrow-minded. To avoid this negligence, humans can change their own attitude, mindset, or consciousness to change
In this paper, we will discuss both Gilbert Harman’s and J. David Velleman’s theories of intentions. The central dispute between their two theories of intention is that Harman holds that intention entails belief, while Velleman holds that intention consists of belief. Velleman constructs a model of intention in which intention consists of belief in order to explain the apparent spontaneity of an agent’s self-knowledge. Harman, on the other hand, rejects the thesis that intention consists of belief because of an example involving an insomniac. My goal in this paper is to show how Velleman’s theory of intention can avoid the problem posed by the case of the insomniac. The conclusion will then be that Velleman’s theory is more plausible than Harman’s, because it is able to successfully explain more about our commonsense observations of agents, namely, how an agent’s self-knowledge is spontaneous.
The constraints society has for people were already determined, and with their influences it may also cause a person to have a determined future. Therefore leading me to believe determinism is the cause of people’s events. Although this argument doesn’t explain how intuition was created, natural laws from a chain of causes gave me a reason to believe how our intuition was formed in the first place. The importance of this topic is overlooked by the majority of society. Having a choice of determinism over free will can help our society in a number of ways like, deciding what punishments should be made for people.
A habit of mind is a way of thinking that one acquires over time. It is a type of thought that involves thinking beyond what society considers right or wrong, but acknowledging through complex thought, what is morally right. It is not easily achieved and is somewhat like a muscle, in that you have to build it up over time through intellectual work and hardship. Not everyone can achieve a strong habit of mind, in fact most don’t. The habit is a way of thinking that allows one to communicate with knowledge when the answer is not initially apparent. In order to think in this complex manner a person has to be well educated in all subjects of intelligence. Having a good education goes hand in hand with having good habits of mind, because in order to have positive functioning habits, a person has to be well rounded enough to considered every possible solution to the problems or questions posed. Being able to use a habit of mind also requires a type of thinking where others nor any outside force constrains any ideas or solutions . This by definition is a habit of mind.
People vary not only in their capability to do but also in their “volition to do”, or motivation. The motivation of people relies on the forces of their motives and these motives are sometimes set as needs, wants, drives, and impulses within the person. Motives are directed toward goals, which may be aware or subconscious; therefore motives are the “reasons” of behavior.
“Men are dogs.” “Don’t be a chicken.” “She is sneaky like a snake.” These are common idioms that are spoken today among our society, but one question is comes to mind. Are humans and animals more similar than we think? Some would declare the only difference between human and animals is that animals lack verbal communication. According to Jill McCorkle’s book, Creatures of Habit, she explains the variations of similar characteristics between both, humans and animals. McCorkle uses sociobiology to develop her story titles in connection with the animal counterparts. According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Science, “sociobiology” is defined as “the study of the evolution of social behavior in all organisms, including human beings.” By using sociobiology, this gives the reader a better insight on the connection between humans and animals. Throughout my essay, I will select several short stories and illustrate the similar characteristic between humans and animals.

In addition, previous settings can sway how we react to information. JSMF outlines how private factors influence heuristic use more than outside factors. For example, past incidents can physically change the way the brain makes future choices (Chaiken, Liberman, & Eagly, 1989).
Learning is quite an influential aspect of every organism’s lifetime. We learn through experience, which over time allows for a certain amount of change in our behaviour. The process of learning influences and alters the way we act, interpret, and perceive, and may effectively adjust our views on numerous subjects. If we are trained or become accustomed into acting a certain way, our behaviour may alter to allow for this new change in perception. The field of psychology is full of previous and recent studies which revolve around conditioning a subject. This method of conditioning is a learning process through which an organism relates a stimulus to another simultaneously occurring event. This process has been used for a very large number of studies with different topics and objectives, one of these topics being alcohol and drinking behaviour. The two following studies incorporate and test different conditioning techniques related to altering attitudes toward drinking behaviour. The objective of both studies is to determine whether alcoholism and drinking behaviour can be influenced either positively or negatively through conditional learning.
