Mystery of Habit
Brain is the most powerful organ in the human body, since it’s responsible for everything from the way you move to what you think; however, the lack of distinguishing between good and bad habits challenges individuals to understand the habit loop. In his novel, The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg presents a diagram of the habit loop cycle explaining how habits form with the presence of a cue, followed through by a routine, and ending with a reward. From Duhigg’s theories on habits, I continue my habit, or routine of constantly listening to music with lyrics while doing schoolwork whether that is studying for a test or doing homework for a class because I crave the reward of finishing schoolwork while listening to music; however,

Your brain to go into automatic mode and which habits to use” (19). In other words, Cue is the starting engine that drives individuals habits automatically without having individuals consent. Individuals react to a cue like a natural instinct as if a puppy would do a trick for their owners for a little treat to enjoy. When teaching a puppy how to respond to a clicker, the owner would simply start the clicking sound and immediately reward the puppy with a treat when responded to the sound. Repeating this process several times will build a habit into the puppy’s brain allowing immediate access, when next time the owner makes the clicking noise the puppy would respond to the clicking sound without having to think because the puppy has memorized the habit to use for later because of the reward. Craving is the actual fuel that starts the habit loop to a rotating cycle, without the feeling of crave there’s no habit loop since the individual doesn’t have any intention to seek rewards. Wolfram Schultz a professor of neuroscience at the University of Cambridge conducted an experiment with a monkey named Julio; the purpose of the experiment was to examine how Julio’s brain would react when Julio followed a procedure of touching a lever when the colored shape appeared on a monitor then Julio was rewarded with a drop of his favorite blackberry juice. While repeating this experiment, Schultz has seen an unusual activity inside Julio’s brain, where at first Julio’s brain activity started spiking when he was rewarded with drop of blackberry juice; however, as the experiment continued its brain activity started spiking when the cue appeared on the screen. Julio’s brain had developed a habit; “… habit only emerges once Julio begins craving the juice when he sees the cue” (49). Now that Julio has developed a craving for the blackberry juice, he will automatically follow the habit. This experiment clearly proves how significant craving can be since it drives the habit loop. The regular habit loop gave her the pleasure when she visited the casino and the reward system in the brain was controlled and brought back to normal. Angie couldn’t control the impulse to gamble even though she knew that her gambling was hurting her loved ones. The relationships were strained and all she thought about was ‘Gambling’ whether she was up or down. It takes courage to stop an addiction, especially if you have lost a big amount of money and broke the relationships by that time. But compulsive gamblers (addicted to gambling) go through a problem of being totally out of control. It disrupts their lives, but still they won’t prefer to stay off the bet. The same case applied to Angie. She was so preoccupied with gambling that she wasted both her time and money, despite the serious consequences. According to Leshner, drug addiction is a chronic brain disease that is expressed in the form of compulsive behaviors (Leshner, 2001). He believes that drug addiction is influence by both biological, and behavioral factors, and to solve this addiction problem we need to focus on these same factors. On the other hand, Neil Levy argues that addiction is not a brain disease rather it is a behavioral disorder embedded in social context (Levy, 2013). I believe, drug addiction is a recurring brain disease that can be healed when we alter and eliminate all the factors that are reinforcing drug addiction.

When it comes to the topic of addiction, most of us will readily agree that it is a miserable trait to possess. An addiction is a physical and psychological state of being that if not treated correctly could result into harmful wrongdoing. In The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, he recounts a story in which a fatigued housewife named Angie Bachmann lost all of her family’s assets, amounting to a million dollars due to a gambling addiction. Every habit has three components: a cue or a trigger of an automatic behavior to start, a routine the behavior itself, and a reward which is how our brain learns to remember this pattern for the future. According to Duhigg, “you cannot extinguish a bad habit, you can only change it” (63). Duhigg suggests that in order to change ones bad habit the “Golden Rule” must be implied. The Golden Rule is a theory of shifting a habit by retaining the old cue and reward, and tries to change only the routine. Duhigg’s answer to the question in the chapter title, “Are we responsible for our habits?” is simply “Yes.” If we have an awareness of our habits, then we are responsible for their consequences. In the case of Angie Bachmann, she should be held accountable for her gambling debts because she was well aware of her own bad habit and did not try to seek for help.

It all started one day when she felt so lonely that she decided to go out and play in the nearest casino. Angie started by setting rules just so she would not become addicted. As days went by Angie slowly started to break her rules and gambled more than what she should of have. Angie lost a lot of money. Although, Harrah’s casino would send her free stuff and vacation trips to get Angie to play more. Angie realized that she had a problem with gambling and went away for a time, but she went back to Harrah’s casino when her parents inherit her money. Throughout history, motivation has been one of the components to survival. Motivation is needed to get up in the morning and go on about the day in order to survive. As humans began to evolve, so did society, which meant our drive and motivation were derived from different goals rather than one common one. Rather than depending on biological drive, humans started to depend on the system of rewarding the good behavior and punishing the bad. This operating is known as Motivation 2.0 (Pink, 2009). However, this method is flawed due to the fact that this implies that humans are no different from a herd of livestock.
Ivan Pavlov developed a theory called classical conditioning which proposes that learning process occurs through associations between an environmental stimulus and a naturally occurring stimulus. Classical conditioning involves placing a neutral signal before a naturally occurring reflex like associating the food with the bell in Pavlov experiment. In classical conditioning, behavior is learnt by association where a stimulus that was originally neutral can become a trigger for substance use or cravings due to repeated associations between those stimuli and substance use (Pavlov, 1927).
Using the dual systems theory it can be argued that craving also uses two components. The automatic component is the activation of drug-use schemas and is experienced by the person as a slig compulsion to use. The controlled component is the strong urge of needing something, often accompanied by negative backlash when the thing desired is unobtainable.
