A fixed mindset can be very harmful for any student. Teachers and parents have dedicated their time to tell children that they are smart and talented every time they get a good grade. Praising children’s this type of way have had an impact on their lives. Dweck said

By having this fix mindset, they turn down the ability to learn new things. They believe that if you study hard, you are not smart enough, and that if you were smart thins would come to you with no effort. This has made students to lose their belief when they face complicated circumstance. Dweck says that the reason for kids to have a fixed mindset is “intelligence praise”. Dweck’s research had showed that students with a growth mindset are more persistent in learning than students with a fixed mindset. Students with a growth mindset believe that you can become smarted by learning with effort and dedication. After a setback in school they would keep themselves motivated and they would work hard to learn more. In Kamins and Dweck research, they gather two groups of children and give them problems from a test. One group was praised for their intelligence and the other group was praised for their effort. The children that were praised for intelligence after facing difficult questions did not want to learn any more. But the children that were praised for the effort waned to learn the difficult assignment. The one that were praised for their effort were the ones to keep their motivation, effort, and self-confident. This means that having a growth mindset is beneficial because you know that you can learn if you stay focused, when getting a difficult task.

Some where taught that each person had a set amount of intelligence, while others were trained that intelligence is something they could develop and increase over time. in Dweck’s article she writes, “ It is a belief that intelligence can be developed that opens students to a love of learning, a belief in the power of effort and constrictive, determined reactions to setbacks” (Dweck pg. 2). Dweck is talking about a growth mind-set in which is how students perceive the growth of knowledge and that no one person is born with a certain amount of intelligence, it too can be trained and developed over time. When asked afterwards if they wanted to do the same level of problems or try more challenging ones, they chose the task that would allow them to look smart and do well on. Consequently, while telling a child how smart he or she is, we are sending a message to not take risks and just look the part. If a teacher continuously told a student that they were bad at reading then the child will continuous think that they are bad at reading, which will turn to loathe towards reading.
