Yeats, a famous Irish poet, wrote: “education is not the filling a pail, but the lightening of a fire”. Education is an essential part of life, and many people have a plan to attend college. Even though being a successful student is the goal of many students, not all of them will achieve this goal. In order to get good results in school, students have to learn to light a fire by themselves, because nothing will change if students do not start doing anything to boost their brains. When the fire is lit, the desire to learn and the hunger for knowledge of students will come. Therefore, I recommend that students develop grit and a good memory because both are necessary to succeed.
Grit is like a stairway to a successful student. Duckworth (2013), professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, found out grit is one the characteristic of successful people because “grit has two components: passion and perseverance” (p.56). But it is not true. Many researches have shown that Grit is more important than IQ. According to Angela Lee Dutchworth, a psychologist who is deeply interested in searching the characteristics of successful people, at the TED talk 2013, she said “one characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success… and it was not IQ…It was grit.” In other words, ability to keep trying even things are difficult is the most crucial key to succeed. Also, the idea that only smart and high IQ people have great memory is wrong. At TED talk, Foer (2012) said “great memories are learned.” That means memory can be trained like muscles. Students can have a better memory if they focus on what they learn in classes. The more focus students have, the better memory they get.
